Ben-DutkaLionhead boss Peter Molyneux received a BAFTA Fellowship this past week, and we figure that's deserved.
And during his speech, the man of the hour made a concession that all journalists have been waiting to hear: essentially, he admitted he has had a tendency to blow things out of proportion. Just a little. Remember when he was touting Fable as the "greatest game of all time?" Well, as an act of contrition, here's what Molyneux had to say :
"I'd like to thank the press, by the way, for listening to my stuff. Sorry – I've slightly over-promised on things on occasion. I could name at least 10 features in games that I've made up to stop journalists going to sleep and I really apologise to the team for that."
Molyneux has titles like Populous and Dungeon Keeper on his resume as well and is now the fourth industry vet to receive the BAFTA Fellowship. He went on to say that he "thanks the stars" that he's still around, and he loves his job a ton. In fact, after getting this award, he's just gonna work harder. We can respect that.
And no worries, Pete. We know you invented stuff and "over-promised." That's okay. We forgive ya.
no worries? he actually received death threats over his over promisng of features in fable. i don't hink it's cute, or funny when developers grossly misrepresent their games.
i didn't send him any death threats, though.

Of course they do. Go to any of the major release game forums, and you'll see people posting as if they are personally insulted or hurt over their "disappointments".

Yeah, there's a pretty thin line between "over-promising" and outright lying.
I'm not comfortable with it. Everybody being OK with it just sends a message to other developers in that it's OK to keep over-promising (and lying) about their own projects.
It should be obvious to see which developers are just chest beating. Crytek?! I am looking at you.
Totally agree – it's really strange behaviour, particularly when he's already known for it. It's the boy who cried wolf syndrome, and Molyneux's got it bad. It's been a long time since I've taken anything he said at face value, because it wouldn't be rational to do so, and I'm quite sure that's not what he's trying to achieve.
How do you "Over promise" something exactly. If you do keep your word is that under promising?
Well even though this tactic is outright wrong, we all know he isn't alone in this.
As much as we hate it, people will continue to do it though, because it always gets people interested and there will always be people who buy right away based on these promises.
More like he just couldn't deliver. And Pete, I got a question for ya. Was Milo just a way to take up time because Microsoft actually had nothing? Cuz, yeah that doesn't seem to even be a real thing.
I wouldn't be surprised considering they ditched the "idea" before Kinect was released.

Milo was canceled before the Kinect came out.
And pedophiles everywhere are still sobbing over the loss.
What better place can he admit to lying than at a awards ceremony, receiving an award?

Speaking of Crytek. They suck. I compared 360 to PS3 on the demo and the ps3 version blows hardcore.
Why would he burn himself like that? I will never believe another word he says…or bother with his future projects.

Making stuff up is like me saying i ride my unicorn to work on the railroad tracks every day (which i totally do).
Its all semantics. Making stuff up sounds whimsical, lying sounds malicious. What Molydouche does is hurtful, not fun, therefor people should not try to make it sound soft.

So this is what Microsoft is all about? Advertising during one of the worst natural disasters in history and supporting Developers of mediocre open world titles that have to fabricate features to keep the gaming media's attention, unacceptable and pathetic.

I was surprised that MS would use the Japan Earthquake to advertise Bing. Though I wouldn't be surprised if the order to do so came directly from Steve Ballmer.

Its funny, I never thought "10 features" lied about would ever be equated to "slightly over-promised on things on occasion."
So Fable 4 is probably ready by now too.

wtf crytek? it's been confirmed that the ps3 version is running sub hd, too. unlike the 720p 360 version. so after all that talk, and their magical new engine they still had to resort to the same old tricks that multiplat developers have been using for years to try to keep the frame rate up on the ps3. it didn't work, either.
to think they had the nerve to say the crysis 2 alpha looked better than kz3.
It shouldn't surprise anyone. It is their first PS3 game. It's the lying that should irk people.
I am waiting for him to say that Fable 4 will have graphics better than KZ3, over 9000 different endings depending on what you do, and acting that puts Uncharted to shame.
Don't forget better animations than Uncharted too. LOL!
