2010’s Best: Top 5 “Shame On You For Missing It!”

Few hardcore gamers can play every game on their "to do" list in any given year. It's just a frustrating fact.

This is why we all have priority lists and why certain titles inevitably fall on such lists; we must make room for the most anticipated. This is why you may have pushed aside something like Bioshock 2 as you saved your cash for the likes of Red Dead Redemption , God of War III and Final Fantasy XIII . But there were more than a few titles you really shouldn't have missed in 2010 and if you've got a few gift cards burning a hole in your wallet, we've got some "catch-up" suggestions for you. Here are the Top 5 "Shame On You For Missing It!" titles of 2010:

5. Yakuza 3

Even though it routinely earns plenty of critical acclaim, the series just doesn't excel on the sales charts in this country. Admittedly, it caters to a smaller niche market; those who really like Japanese culture and don't mind subtitles. But regardless of personal preferences in setting and style, Yakuza 3 remains a solid, entertaining title that gives you plenty of bang for your buck. Featuring another surprisingly emotional and in-depth storyline, a ton of brutal hand-to-hand combat (for which the franchise is known), and even a bit of exploration, the game is well worth your attention.  Oh, and Kazuma Kiryu is a super huge bad-ass.

4. Bioshock 2

As I mentioned above, the game's February 9 release date gave many forward-thinking gamers pause. March was gonna be huge – and oh, it was – and it was important to conserve funds. The title did relatively well on the sales charts, but this is more geared to the PSXE community: we know FPSs aren't exactly popular around here and even though Bioshock 2 is part-RPG, it still looks like a regular shooter on the surface. Secondly, because the original came late to the PlayStation 3, Sony fans are, consequently, a little late to the Bioshock party. Therefore, a whole lot of PS3 copies of the game went unsold and we're telling you…that's a mistake.

3. Soldner-X 2: Final Prototype

Many PSN games often fly under the radar, especially when compared to the big-budget productions, but this is one PSN exclusive you shouldn't have missed. Sure, Joe Danger is almost a shoo-in for downloadable game of the year (and arguably the best digital game to date), but Soldner-X 2: Final Prototype is an extremely polished, oddly addicting side-scrolling shooter that keeps you riveted. Vastly superior to the original, this sequel is simultaneously one of the prettiest and most fulfilling PSN titles currently available. You can nab it for a relatively cheap price, too, so don't waste another minute…you'll thank us, especially if you love old-school arcade space shooters.

2. Singularity

And speaking of shooters, Raven's super fun FPS is absolutely one of the year's most satisfying experiences. Singularity surprised the hell out of me (2009's sub-par Wolfenstein couldn't possibly have been made by the same team, could it?), and I completed it with a smile on my face. The combination of rock solid shooter mechanics and cool time manipulation skills worked exceedingly well, and even the length didn't disappoint. The story was more than passable for the genre and for the record, there is no cooler weapon than the Seeker. Even if FPSs aren't your bag, there's a darn good possibility you'll have a blast with this one.

1. nail'd

Speaking of surprises, no game knocked me off my feet quite as much as nail'd . If you check around, you'll see similar viewpoints: critics were just plain shocked at the game's sky-high (pun intended) fun factor and outrageous sense of speed. The track design is almost unparalleled this generation – just try it if you don't believe me – and you will find that it's very, very difficult to drop the controller. It sort of came out of nowhere and unfortunately, it had to contend with the fall juggernauts. It's unlikely that it brought in a ton of cash and that's too bad; it's just so insane from top to bottom. Besides, it's a nice contrast to the more serious titles of the late-2010 period.

I have Soldner X2… it's a good game… has some of the best shoot-em up arcady graphics I have seen on the console, besides Trine.

Ben, why no Trine on the list? One of the best platformers I have played. Can't wait for Trine 2.

Q!

People missed out on Bioshock 2, for shame indeed!

As for Yakuza, i was interested, but when i played the demo, the gameplay just seemed very flat aand weak.

Sorry its been a long time since i have poted any comment at this web site , I'v been really busy over the last couple of weeks at my work beside Gran Turismo is taking a lot my time ,
I have played both Bioshock 2 and Singularity ,and I really enjoined the Campaign part of both of them specially the later one I can describe it as one of the most entertaining games ever but still I couldn't manage to get a single multi-player game, because there wasn't any online users , I really recommend all player to give it a try and it was mentioned above it has a healthy amount of time for a single campaign .
Off topic I am really enjoying GT5 and I can see myself spending all the time playing it till I can get my hand on KILLZONE3

I never cared for any of them aside from Bioshock 2 which I'm still waiting for further price drop.

So…..should I wear a plastic bag over my head next time I go out?

Seriously? Bioshock 2 is going for about 1/4 of the original retail price now.

I got BioShock 2 for $10 at HMV. Somehow, it got into Santa's hands and then back into mine.

I got Bioshock 2 in september for about 18 USD and haven't finished it yet. I'll try to complete it by the ende of the year… damn I've only got 4 days.

And I just grab singularity and it's a damn fun game.

It's a shame… too many games so little time.

Bioshock 2 isn't for me… I tried it and got frustrated by it. That genre isn't my cup of tea… Nail'd however, hmmm this is the first time someone talks positively about it, I saw gameplay and I was intrigued. Did not buy the game cause the amount of negative reviews but also the amount of really really good games that came out last couple of months. Maybe I will pick it up wen it hits the bargain bin.

Enslaved should be on this list. And Vanquish. So many people passed on them.

Hey Ben, can you make an article that's the total opposite of this one. The games that we bought, but should have skipped? I would like to hear your opinion on that topic.

FF14 for PC was total elephant dung and i bought the collectors edition too cause im a big fan of FF! It was such a waste of money. All its there for now is for my FF collection 1-14. Other games that should've been passed are Naughty Bear, Iron Man 2 Alien vs predator. Well if you guys bought those games =/. I think alot of people know what kind of games they should stay away from. C

BioShock 2 imo is the only game deserving of this "award"

But this sequel never gives you that same breathtaking moment of experiencing Rapture for the first time like the original BioShock did. That wow factor doesn't make the same impact this time & in no way does it touch the original BioShock & it's villain, Andrew Ryan.

It is still a sweet game though with some good ideas but the fellas at 2K need to move out of Rapture & thankfully with Infinite coming up, they have done just that.

Bioshock 2 is a fantastic game, but it isn't necessarilly underrated. The story was in my mind still enthralling but a little weaker than the first (better ending in this one though). Gameplay wise the second game made unbelivable improvements and is superior in that area.
Other than that, I have no interest in Yakuza (couldn't get into the demo) and I'm still wondering about Singularity. Now knowing what 2011 will be like I don't think I want to spend extra money for games that are pretty good compared to the likely extraordinary exclusive titles of the new year.

I still can't wrap my head around MODNATION RACERS not being reviewed and THEN not mentioned on this list?

WTF is Ben's problem? Modnation Racers got an average of a 9.0 on most gaming sites and this underrated and STILL relevant and updated game, which is also a PS3 EXCLUSIVE, goes ignored on this strictly Playstation web site.
Way to go guys.
It was only one of the best games of the year and easily on my top 5 for 2010 (excluding nothing)
