Square-Enix Clarifies CGI vs. Gameplay Trailer Concerns

Remember the TGS 2010 trailers for Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII that just recently surfaced ?

For whatever reason, some were saying the entire trailer was full of pre-rendered CGI. …from our viewpoint, we don't really see why anyone would think that, but apparently, it has been a topic of conversation and argument. To us, it seems obvious that only the first part of the Versus XIII trailer featuring Noctis was pre-rendered CGI while all the rest was gameplay. The good news is that, according to PS3Center citing a recent Tweet at Square-Enix's official Japanese site for Agito XIII , we're right. Seriously, as good as the rest of the game looks, we didn't really expect any less, especially with the developer's constant claims of graphical superiority. But there is one interesting tidbit: they say that part with Noctis running through a few empty-appearing landscapes can also be traversed by car. …why did I just suddenly think of Final Fantasy VIII ? Am I the only one?  Anybody remember that?

Anyway, we still need to see more gameplay before we pass any sort of judgment but for now, we like what we see.

Nope, your not the only one. Playing Final Fantasy VIII right now and i completely forgot you can rent cars until i read that as tidbit about Versus XIII.

I really hope this game stays exclusive and delivers. I need something from Square to wash 5 years of little PS3 support and FFXIII out of my mouth.

Indeed. SE going PS3 exclusive would sure help my opinion of them.

They don't even need to go completely exclusive. They just need to keep the promises they have made. Especially in regards to this game.

Lol, yeah those cars. Too bad they ran out of fuel, and the fuel was expensive. And I'd rather convert those fuels to fire ammo than use them for the cars.

Same. I rarely used the cars as i am a grind whore when it comes to Final Fantasy.

Bring it on i say!

Could you still run into enemies in the car…? I forget.

No, you were completely safe in the cars.

I never used em, in FF you pretty much NEED every enemy you encounter. I don't recalled if the car let you run into baddies, but in any case it was too fast and would mean less baddies.

I don't think so but i could be wrong. I haven't rented a car in FFVIII in years. I'm playing it again right now but have yet to rent a car.

EDIT: Doh! i just loaded my game to see but i forgot i'm in the dream with Laguna and Co. Won't get another chance to rent a car for some time.

And we think gas is expensive in our world. The FFVIII world could have really used some of the mako energy from FFVII. I bet it would have been cheaper.

No encounters whatsoever. Final fantasy VII you could in the buggy.

Speaking of FFVIII i just played almost all of it within the past few weeks. On disk 3 right before the boss battle with seifer and…why is the name escaping me..but regardless you cant run into enemies while in the car.

On that note; I thought of FFVIII right away once i heard of cars and airships. Sounds like i get a little of what i want. Gameplay SEEMS ok..but we shall see within the near future and if i may be so bold to speak, they should do a remake of FFVIII instead of VII. Dont get me wrong VII is good but VIII beats it in my book.

Yeah, I didn't think you could. That's the only reason I ever rented one; just in case I wanted to get somewhere fast.

Damn Jawknee, you just gave me this urge to play FFVIII. Picked up my PS1 CDs, and the PS3 won't load it.. I look at the CD and there's a huge crack on it. This sucks. I have no idea how that happened.

I guess I'll buy it on PSN now, even though I much prefer physical data.

Do it! PSN final fantasy are the best value. So much game for so little money. If you have a PSP you can play them on it too. They look nice on the PSP. 🙂

I too prefer physic media but I make an exception for PSN classics since I can play them on the go with my PSP.

Derrr, who thought all that was CGI? 360 kids?

Keep it exclusive, keep ALL the content, and we may have a winner from the company that hates its fans.

Also, the fight with the behemoth was slowed down because in actually combat Noctis is almost too fast to see. I don't have a link, but I'm sure you can find it.

SE has lost its ability to make a good RPG. This'll probably tank the way FFXIV has.

And honestly, anyone who thinks those drab landscapes are pre-rendered cgi has got to be out of his mind. Or have they not picked up a controller since Star Fox?

Ricochet

I disgress. My friend (JRPG fanatic) who owns Lost Odyssey says it's one of the best JRPG (if not the only) from SE this generation.

FFXIII was "sabotaged", without Nomura, we cannot rule out the standard of SE today. Those "drab" landscapes only points out the game is an "open-world" as opposed to the linear disgrace that is FFXIII. In other words, think FFXIII with an open-world and better "real-time" battle system.

I still rock starfox 64 today, its one of the best games i've played. 'Are you goint to listen to that monkey?' 'Haa*laughing evily* you're not as STUPID AS YOU LOOK' 😀 and don't forget, 'if i go down i'm taking you with me!' 'AAAHHHHH' 'DOn't ever give up my son!' 'Father?'
yeah totally love that game. and i'm very optimistic for versus XIII. there is stake pinning my ffxiii disc to the ground outside my house'

It's quite evident that FFXIII was compromised due to the 360, regardless of what you think. It was the only reason why Nomura dropped the project (I can think of this as the most logical reason as this point).

Nomura originally wanted exclusive because the PS3 could do more (not specifically graphics, but the amount of "space" needed). Seeing how FFVII took 3 discs when the standard (at that time) was one, I'm hoping versus XIII would take every bit of that "dual-layer" blu-ray space knowing Nomura.

I am however, surprised by Agito. I didn't expect the gameplay to be so….. epic.

have no doubt VXIII will look absolutely fantastic, crystal tools is a very powerful engine!
but, what worries me is, well, FFXIII.
please, $E, PLEASE just give us neir gameplay in the FF universe, with expected graphics.
thats all the fans want, a true traditional JRPG.
not this westernized crap!
as i have always said imitations ALWAYS suck!
hell look at the Japanese take on TPS, cough quantum theroy.
yea, vanquish looks ok, but its just fast paced, its bayonetta but with guns.
shooters are about so much more than fast paced, there about tactics, team work and advanced AI.
3 things vanquish clearly does not have!

I remember reading quite a while back that you could drive vehicles in FFVersusXIII. With that out of the way, I really liked what I saw of the gameplay in both of these titles, and can't wait for the conference in January. Give it to me S-E, and make it good… Wait.
Peace.

Shinji Mikami knows a fair bit about shooters, having made one of the best ever, Resi Evil 4.

Shooters needn't just be about tactics, team work etc. In single player modes they can be about pacing, atmosphere etc

I have never doubted SE to make a game of high production value.
FFXIII has one of the sweetest graphic out there, they are a Japanese giant company after all.
HOWEVER, it's not the technical level I'm worried here. It's how the game play.

I'm one of those many SE fans who are giving SE an ultimatum with Versus, either it's a great game or we stop supporting SE.

Underdog15

I think it'll be easier to like FFvXIII since it's not a direct number entry and fans are more open to the style of gameplay.

But I do agree with you 100%. FF is a mistress of mine, and it doesn't really matter how good looking she is… in the end, she still needs to perform.

Snaaaake

Yea you're right, fans never expect Versus to play like an actual FF but expectation is that they expect it to play like Kingdom Hearts but better.

So there's still room for fans to be pissed.

How could anyone think this was CGI?

1 – This is SE we're talking about, they make impossibly amazing graphics.
2 – CGI of Noctis….running? That would be pretty uninteresting CGI.

Those 360 fanboys need to know when to quit.

It's pretty blatantly obvious which parts are not pre-rendered.

Not really a news item, if you ask me. Another appropriate title is: "Morons are out there."

Yup.

Indeed, i thought it was clear too. I have to say though i was expecting to see all the menu icons in the battles system aswell, so i was a little dissapointed by the preview, i can't really grasp the game until that.

If memory serves me correctly ( which these days is a 50/50 ) but since ff8 is my favorite final fantasy, i think the boss fight your at on disc 3 is the seifer/adel fight. the one that seifer pushes rinoa at adel in the cgi. god i love that game…. alot actually.
the screen shot on top for ffv13 looks pretty snazzy ( dude looks like he mugged cloud for his clothes ), im gonna have to check that and agito out. ff13 didnt strike my fancy and didnt interest me, so i passed on it. wish id had done the same with 12. anyways, im really hoping that s-e get things straight and starts delivering ff's like the had when the were still squaresoft. here to good times.

The part where they actually say, let alone we SEE him plainly traversing out in an open area, reminds me of CLASSIC FF games, it increases so much more when they say you can drive in a car, it reminded me of FF7 and FF8, same as you Ben! I have high hopes for this, cause if even this game fails, then I will completely lose 100% hope for Square-Enix to pull out any great game except for a FF7 Remake unless they're able to fu** that game up too somehow.
