Sony: The PS3 Will “Store All Types Of 3D Content”

It's not just about 3D games; it's about 3D everything .

In addition to being able to play 3D video games and 3D Blu-Ray movies (the requisite patch for that should drop in September, by the way), Sony wants the PlayStation 3 to handle anything related to 3D, including television shows and even YouTube. Sony Worldwide Studios head of 3D games Mick Hocking told PSU that the PS3 would eventually become your one-stop machine for your 3D entertainment.

"Crucially for us, PlayStation 3 will be able to store all types of 3D content. And we can do this through properly upgrading the Firmware on the platform. So you'll see 3D games in the next 12 months, you'll see Blu-ray movies in 3D, and as soon as the broadcasts start through our PlayTV services, you're going to watch 3D content [via that].

YouTube will be supporting 3D content over the next 12 months as well – and you'll be able to watch that on the PlayStation 3. And as you start taking 3D pictures of your family or 3D camcorder movies, you can play those back on PS3, too."

3D, 3D, 3D. It's gonna be everywhere. Hopefully, by the time it really starts to penetrate the market, those glasses will have dropped in price. The price of 3D-compatible TVs might fall a bit as well, but I wouldn't expect them to fall too far; industry analysts said late last year that HDTV prices had essentially bottomed out, and they appear to be right so far. But hey, everything gets cheaper over time, right? And I'm ready to go…gots my 3D HDTV. …just need something in 3D I want to see/play.

Nice story. 😀

As I have been saying for about 12 months now. Even if MS and Nintendo bring a new system out, the PS3 already does *everything* that they can or will do. It does HD, 3D, download, BluRay, DVD, CD, MP3, MP4, ps1 & PS3 games, etc…

It was a long term game that Sony played, but in the end their strategy has placed the PS3 as the nexus of HD/3D video and gaming entertainment in the Home. Oh, and as a reminder, that PS3 will not rise in price, or require an upgrade to handle any of this.

Can we congratulate them and give them a round of applause now?

Hey Highlander,
Off topic question for you and I apologize to everyone.
If you get an error code on blu ray movies that pretty much say that the system has lost it's blu ray copyright keys, is there a quick fix for this or is a Sony customer service call needed? Any idea?

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

That sounds like a firmware upgrade required. The keys may have become corrupt, but if you force a firmware upgrade, the keys should be rewritten during the update. I have to admit though, I've never faced that issue, it might require a customer service call if forcing a firmware update doesn't do it.

I believe that you can force a PS3 to update it's firmware to the most recent one (even if that is the one already installed) from the PS3 recovery menu. I think it is Option 6. You'll need to download a copy of the latest firmware from Sony onto a USB drive because the system recovery firmware update will not read it any other way.

Cool, you should be able to find a guide for the System recovery menu on the US PlayStation forums. If you run into any issues at all with updating the firmware, I'd urge caution and say remember all the cautions about firmware updates.

Applause is greatly deserved for my beloved system.I was once an avid 360 gamer but like time itself all things change.I still have my 360 and xbox live, but I always saw the potential in the PS3.Now there is no mystery what system will dominate the masses big-ups SONY.

I already just ranted in another article, regarding Move and 3D, so I'll not carry it into here. All I'll say is I'm getting real tired of hearing about both. Maybe I'm alone on this one?

They are both optional, so what difference does it make to you?

I get that they're both optional, I'm just tired of constantly hearing about them. Don't mind me, it's late and I'm cranky.

the 3D i can live without as my vision is too screwed to appreciate it properly. I felt that Move was a gimmick but after watching it on E3 and some video on youtube, it actually looks pretty legitimate. I was skeptical at first but Move may be a worthwhile addition.

WorldEndsWithMe

I dunno man, I still have a hard time believing they will get millions upon millions across the world to don those ridiculous glasses for this particular gimmick. It may fizzle.

RadioHeader

Well it's got to happen sooner or later. If glassesed-3D fails, they'll be forced to come up with next-gen-glassesless-3D much sooner, so it's still an important step. Personally, I'm tempted to do a Cartman until the Holodeck comes along.

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

3D without glasses is not steroscopic, I'm not sure how well that will work. Until holographic imaging comes along, stereoscopic imaging will be the best 3D technology we have, and as such stereoscopic viewing will be the best match for it.

To go beyond stereoscopic imaging requires more than two camera's imaging from multiple locations and all that must be processed into a full 3D image. But until we have 360×360 degree imaging of objects, completely 3D viewing where you can walk around an object or presentation to view from any angle is unlikely to happen

The technology I really want to see appearing in the home is the polarized image technology used by RealD in the movies. For that you only need a pair of cheap polarized lenses which can be made in any style including clip-ons for those who already wear glasses. The polarized image technology is completely passive, so there are no drawbacks with having an active component in the glasses. However at the moment this only works with projection systems. But this is the technology I want to see in home 3D. We just need LCDs with a polarization layer that can flip the polarization alternately with each frame.

Hey Highlander,
Once Move's already out & about…

If you buy a game that's made for the Move setup, and you find you don't like that particular game using the Move, I hope you should still be able to play that Move game with the option of using your regular DS3 too.

While surfing around, I don't remember coming across any articles stating whether you'll have this option for all the Move games or not.

Have you come cross any kind of info pertaining to this?

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

I haven't, I've been assuming that it will be handled by the PS3 either sensing whether the Move controller is on, and/or an option kind of like enabling/disabling rumble.

Clamedeus

I know some of moves games have it, but I'm not sure if it's for all of them.

Come on, Biker, you can't be tired already 🙂

I'd like to ask the opposite of Biker's question (if anyone's still around).

Once Move's already out & about…

Would it be possible to patch old games (shooters) to make them Move-compatible.

What Highlander said is true.

If PS3 really is just about everything, I think PS4 will only be an upgrade from PS3 instead of a huge jump like from PS2 to PS3.

I'm more surprised to hear about the 3d tv shows, 3d youtube, 3d camera's, and 3d video camera's than I am that the ps3 will be able to utilize them all. I mean it does everything after all.

Seriously, this is exactly, and I mean this quite literally, exactly the kind of thing that the Cell BE was designed to do. It is a media monster that can cope with multiple video streams simultaneously.

Oh I hear ya highlander. Since I got into gaming late in life, I didn't start out with a playstation. My first console that I purchased for myself was an xbox. I then later got a ps2, but it was nearing the time for new consoles, looking back now I wish I'd had the ps2 first, but hindsight and all that.

Before I chose between the 360 and ps3, I did a ton of online research, looking at what they had in them, what they could do at start, what they could do later. Researched HD-dvd and bluray and every was clear, ps3 was going to be the better machine and well, this time hindsight is still 20/20, but I'm not disappointed.

so they can do all these 3d stuff but they cant have the ps3 play other movie files like mkv. i dont like using the media server thing because i rather just plug my drive to the ps3 and play from there. my desktop is damn old and i dont really want to spend that much to upgrade it to play a few video files. i have to look for AVI and MP4 (which noone really use for videos that much). they got all these high definition shows/videos and they put it all in mkv files. i have 1 season on ranma 1/2 in ogm file and i really want to watch the entire series on my ps3 and tv.

I've been wishing the same thing for such a long time now. There's an Advent Children Complete movie out there that's distributed by some group or person called THORA or something. Best damn quality in the world, I swear, but it's in MKV, lol. Oh well, I guess.

I know it's a pain in the arsenal, but you could convert your MKVs. That's what I do.

kraygen

every time I've tried converting my mkv files, either the picture is poor or the sound is, really sucks.

I did however find a really fast and easy way to convert my dvds to digital mpeg format and store them on my HDD or portable drive, only takes like 15-20 minutes per movie and the ps3 still upscales them.

I love this feature because now I can be the lazy american and pick any movie I have on dvd to watch and not even get outta my chair. =)

i want to convert my videos and i dont really care about the drop in quality unless its pretty big. i just dont want to buy one of those converter softwares just for that and the free ones usually just convert the first 5 mins.

will it include a 3D TV?
thats one thing thats really weird, looking around myer and a few other stores today the smallest 3D TV on sale is a 46 inch.
i spoke to a few managers of the stores asking if theres any reason why there so big, and if there would be any smaller ones in and they said smallest will be 46 inch.
WTF?
why cant 3D TVs be smaller than a 46 inch?
guess i wont be getting one then, ive only got a 32 inch ATM and it barley fits as it is!

Well as I see it the more features the better, even if they are small or large the features are what gives longevity to a system. I believe the PS3 will still be competing with the next gen. X-Box and next gen. Nintendo. I think SONY is going to go beyond their mid-life cycle update process as they have in the past such as releasing a new console in the 5th to 6th year in the console's life cycle. The PS3 IMO just gives you everything you need or could even think of wanting. The media options are astonishing by any media platform standards not to mention the absolutely amazing bargain you get with the system and all it provides. Consumers are finally realizing this is the one stop media powerhouse the whole family can enjoy. SONY has a hit on their hands and they know it, they have momentum…and they know it, they are simply securing and instilling the thought in everyone's mind that this is where it's at. Whether it be 3-D, Games, Music, Photos, Internet, Communication, it seems as though the PS3 Only Does EVERYTHING.

i think its great that you're pushing 3d sony. i just have one itsy bitsy complaint….
who in the HELL has $3000 for a damn 3d tv??? gimme cross game chat, video and music playback during chat, and a updated internet browser, and THEN focus on 3d, ya jerkweeds (my favorite word from uncharted 2)

I agree about the browser update, flash video is always an issue with the ps3 browser, but video and audio playback whilst cross game chatting… Wouldn't that be a bit difficult?

I guess it makes sense if you are watching a movie, put the volume down, and chat to a friend online whilst still watching the images flick by… To be honest don't think you will get what you want just yet… Corporates rule!
