This undoubtedly falls under the "what the fu**" category.
The God of War franchise is widely revered and commonly believed to be the best action series in the recent past. Its third-person combat is fluid, engaging, and totally bad-ass and in the original GoW, it could even be considered innovative. But did you realize that if SCEA Art Director Ken Feldman had had his way, we'd now be anticipating God of War III …the FPS? In a discussion with CGSociety , Feldman dropped the bombshell that will leave many gamers scratching their heads:
"I tried unsuccessfully to convince [Director] Stig to make 'God of War III' a first-person shooter. Kratos could have some truly badass huge weapons that rip gods to shreds. Unfortunately he didn’t see the genius in the idea."
But wait…is anyone else seeing the possible sarcasm in that statement? Why do we get the feeling that Feldman was just kidding around? We'd be very interested if he was being sincere – it just seems like such a radical concept – but it would make far more sense if he was just pulling our leg. Can anyone even conceive of God of War as a first-person shooter? We sure can't. And we certainly aren't worried that the fourth installment will suddenly boast a Killzone -esque style, but when we stumble on quotes like this, we try to understand the reasoning behind it…if it's even real, that is.
Related Game(s): God of War III
wtf LOL. how can GOW hv anything thing to do with FPS? how can the best and the worst be combined? (yea, u heard me right, FPS is the worst console gaming category of modern gaming imo, it used to be just on the Arcade game machine in the gaming room while players holding a gun and shoot, but that was about it, no stories )
if GOW was FPS, it would be an instant failure. do not ruin a legend.

Yeah i really hate fps games, i mean they're just so boring…yeah that includes killzone 2(its a great game but not one id have in my collection). Into hack n slash games mostly.

they arent boring but i do believe the industry has taken fps way to far
The market is being over-crowded with FPS which is causing the genre to lose it's shine. Most FPS are far from boring; In fact almost all games have some sort of entertainment in them, well… except for Desert Bus.
I think he was taking a shot at Halo and MikeBlo$oft there, ya know how it was supposed to be a RTS and they made Bungie turn it into a FPS. Good Joke Feldman, but if you were serious you would have received death threats.
I agree with you 100% BigBoss.
if you like FPS games that doesn't make it a bad genre
Unlike how you FPS haters make it sound, there are a lot of first person shooters that have had a positive influence on games:
1. Doom series – It truly introduced the world of gaming to the FPS genre.
2. Goldeneye 007 & Perfect Dark – Even though many people will say that Halo brought on the deathmatch carnage, it was actually these two games (along with some others on PC) that pioneered deathmatch.
3. Unreal Tournament – It took the deathmatch battles online!
4. Thief – The game that brought stealth mechanics to the FPS genre.
5. The Elder Scrolls & Fallout 3 – Hate to break it to you, but one of the best RPG series in gaming was built with FPS elements in mind. Sure you can also view it in the 3rd person, but it is virtually unplayable.
6. Borderlands – This will be the future of FPSRPGs, and I am VERY excited about it!
That is my defense in favor of the FPS genre. You're free to hate it, but to say that it hasn't been a very influential genre on games as a whole is pure denial… and isn't that also fanboyism? Hmmm. . . . .
Yeah they did implement FPS into those games, but alot of people including myself would have been so disappointed. I mean speaking for myself, I have been waiting for a good action game, I'm pretty burned out on the whole FPS thing. Bring on the Action and RPG's!! lol
@Rouge Ninja.
Doom had LAN based deathmatches long before Unreal happened. Doom prototyped every FPS concept there is. Quake came a long with a few refinements. But Doom pioneered *everything* done in FPS games. Even though Doom had no cover system, players soon became adept at using walls for cover. There really isn't anything that you do in an FPS today that you didn't do in Doom, except perhaps for jumping.

@Ninja
I have played nearly 200 hours of Oblivion, mostly in third-person, so I'd have to disagree. I found combat (even more) chaotic and nearly unplayable in first-person.
this is the reason i dislike fps (other than me wanting 2 see my character): they have such a big influence on the industry, other great games that aren't fps can get overlooked or r less popular. y would GOW ever b a rps to begin with? that makes no sense.
It's very hard to picture it, but I could definitely see a on-rails God Of War type shooter.
yeh i dont think it would have been nearly as good as an fps and is very hard to picture
LOL hard to picture.
I think Kratos probably be limited to arrows and spells. He won't be able to use his classic weapons. It just won't be a God of War game anymore.
I think he was being sarcastic.
Maybe this guy is just dumb…
I just pictured kratos holding a machine gun and shooting.
Great, now all my dreams are ruined.
Please take away his crackpipe and fire him on the spot because……(speechless) u can't change a games genre so simply cause u want to ill ruin the games reputation…….
stupidest thing i have heard in a long time.
"Could God Of War Ever Be A FPS?"- What a ludicrous statement. Ben, you shouldn't have even thought of posting it.
Maybe if it was a combination of Mirror's Edge and Oblivion, it would be decent. Just as a side project though. Not GOW3. Pardon my french, but #$*% that.
If made like Mirrors Edge then yeah I could see a FPS God Of War game.
my thoughts exactly
Maybe Kratos can carry a tent on his back and use a contraption that can shoot 10 spears per hour?
hmm… a mash up of Killzone 2 and God of War…my heads gonna is gonna explode with all the awesomeness involoved in that
you could not package that much EPIC into a videogame case, you would have to put in a lead box
it could be like bioshock where the melee plays a big part in the game and the guns(or arrows in this case) are secondary while still being able to use magicks, just a conception
Think Darksiders: Wrath of War in first person and the idea suddenly becomes possible.
I do think this is a joke though.

Why you always ask for FPS, am bored of FPS…thats why old japanese games are better.. please dont do that Sony
My Wife isn't much of a gamer and after beating Chains of Olympus she is really looking forward to GoW3…But She HATES FPSs! LOL
I would play anything with Kick Ass Kratos but FPS is an overly saturated market.
::WARNING:: Alcohol may have negitive effects on the brain.
Well I can't say it wouldn't be impossible…. also can't say its sensible either. I could see the appeal if you take that level of gore and apply it to an fps but we've already got enough FPS titles out there, it'd just look like a greek Gears of war.
That sounds like some sh*t that Microsoft would do.
Microsoft suit #1 – "Hey, God of War is a big success."
Microsoft suit #2 – "Sweet! lets take the name, rape it, and make it into a shooter with 45 sequels."
Microsoft suit #1 – "Lets do it."
This guy is either joking or baked. How would you work guns into greek mythology?
Last edited by Jed on 10/1/2009 12:47:12 AM
you wouldnt its a joke!
do you really think the devs. havnt done there research about greek mythology and available weaponry that would make it a solid FPS with a wide enough range of weaponry? Thats why the game is so great they did the research very well. Anyone who took this literally for a second and thought that GOW 3 would be an FPS is rediculous!
The thought of it being in first person view on the other hand isnt so outlandish, although i hate the idea, that would be much more believable! Kinda like Oblivion had first person, and so forth. But GOW only works in 3rd person and again anything else would be absolutely redic!
Dont change GOW EVER! Its completely fine and epic the way it is!

@ Jed
If there was a story of the path of Halo, that would be it.
@ wageslaves
Exactly what I was referring to.
You know, there is a reason why some people are art directors and others are game designers. The lesson being, never let your art director design your game. It's rather like letting your Marketing suits design your products instead of letting your Engineers do their own job.
I repeat myself^^^^
dont think he was serious.
he cant be that stupid, and he cant be that stupid to think stig would agree with that.
imagine davids reaction.
we already have GOW3 as a FPS.
its called quantum theory.
you guys are taking this way out of proportion!
the man is NOT talking about making a God Of War shooter,he is just Talking about CHANGING THE PERSPECTIVE FROM THIRD PERSON VIEW TO FIRST PERSON VIEW, thats all folks!
weather or not that works or is a good decision is subjective.
if it was up to me i would give the Option to change perspective in "the options menu"
Nah. Lots more fluidity in with character animations in 3rd person – in FP mode you'd just feel like a spazzstick.
less FPS and more real games plz.
Well said chap.
I wonder: would you still not be able to control the camera? ; P

Luckily the director is The Stig…
Maybe it would be fun as an FPS if you were an enemy of Kratos and you just got to see him constantly coming at you, beating you to smithereens before you could do anything. Dunno…maybe THAT visual would get tiresome too. 😉
