Ubisoft Files For New Driver Trademark

Last year, we heard that a new installment in the long-running Driver series was in the works, but we were mostly devoid of details. Sadly, we remain without any basic information, but we do have evidence that such information should be imminent.

According to what Superannuation found, Ubisoft has filed the appropriate paperwork to trademark the title, Driver: The Recruit . This would make the fifth title in the franchise, although we're not entirely certain of the targeted platforms. We have to assume it'll be for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 – and possibly the PSP – but right now, that's all we can do…assume. However, with the trademark going in on April 21, the timing could be perfect for an ultimate unveiling at E3 in the first week of June. For those of you who aren't aware, and perhaps aren't quite old enough, the original Driver on the PlayStation was one of the finest games of the generation, and Driver 2 was pretty damn good, too. The series kinda took a downturn after this, but with all this new power and potential offered by the next-gen systems, we'd like to think that Ubisoft could rejuvenate this ailing series. Yeah, it's about driving, but there's a bit more to it, and if you really think about the concept, there are immense and even limitless possibilities. Let's just hope the early fans haven't forgotten about its good name.

We'll let you know as soon as Ubisoft reveals some facts regarding Driver: The Recruit . For now, let's just be hopeful and remember that Ubisoft does have the ability to produce a gem.

Oh sweet! I used to love playing Driver! Maybe it will fill that empty space I'm keeping open for The Getaway…..

I heard some time ago that The Getaway was canceled…I'm hoping some publishers will pick it up in the near future though…

I have them all, wasn't that keen on Parallel Lines but it was still ok as a Driver game. I'll probably get the new one if it comes out.

Funny thing is I have the original game and my memory card with a save on the last level and I could never pass it… Maybe I should pop it into my PS3 and give it another shot……
But I guess I need to buy the Men card reader thingy….

The first two driver games were just amazing. I loved them both. I dont own them anymore, but wish I did.

I think those games really plowed the way for GTA3.

Driver 2 was awsome back in the day. Favourite car game on the PS1. DRIV3R was dissapointing. It wasn't bad, it just needed more polish and the missions and storyline wern't very exciting. Anyone remember the excrutiating level in Driver 2 where you had to stop that car in Rio that went around the cliffs where you could fall down?

Out of the thousands of games I have played, I have never failed a single mission/task so many times. The fleeing car had infinite mass, you couldn't alter its course no matter how hard you hit it, and its path changed every time you restarted the mission. Only until I was tipped a strategy to get ahead of it and let your rear bumper wear the health down, I must have failed it over 100 times at least.

my first console game was driv3r, buying it along with my ps2, i was pretty amazed by the game, but that was because i had driver 1 to compare it to

and it wasnt that bad, i mean, the vehicle physics were much better then the ones in gta (san andreas)

Driver 1 and 2 were My favourites back when I was young.

Driver 1 was one of my favorite PS1 games but sadly it has turned into a GTA clone as of late.

Alot of games are GTA clones nowadays and the genre is starting to get old for me.

The first Driver was awesome, totally a midway point on the road to GTA3, cause as I was playing it I was thinking to myself, "the only way this game could be better would be if I could get out of this car and snag another one to ditch those cops!"

Great game, looking forward to seeing if they can bring back the thrill of some of those chases.

The 1st driver was the best of all of them, part 2 was good but doesn't top part one. once they took him out the car and had him running around they lost me just a little thou. i love the original concept were it was just driving no other game even came close to it. i still have it same on my memory card. Parallel lines was good too they kinda brought it back to its roots which was good to see love the driving mechanics. I DO HOPE THE DO THIS ONE JUSTICE

Driver and Driver 2 are landmark achievements in video game history. I found myself screaming on forums for Reflections to return to the "straight ahead" gritty style these games offered while DRIV3R and Parallel Line were in development. Instead of spending all funds on licensing mediocre music tracks, advertising, and adapting to generic mainstream gameplay, reinvesting in the old formula or recreating Driver or Driver 2 would be extremely effective. I was in denial on DRIV3R and kept telling myself it was a good game, but my heart was truly broken when Parallel Lines came out. I've never looked back and now only play the original and its successor.

Go back and do what you knew you should have done after Driver 2, Reflections! The fact DRIV3R and Parallel Lines were watered down and trying to "fit in" with the GTA generation instead of being their own one-of-a-kind individual (as the first two titles were) is an embarrassment to the uniqueness Driver and Driver 2 brought. Here's a third and probably last hope you will do the right thing…

I am one of the few that actually loved all 4 previous titles. The first one I played to death on my old PC, the second one me and my brother played everyday one year on the PlayStation, the third one me and my friend played all the time at his house, and finally Parallel Lines was the first game ever I pre-ordered.
