Sega Teases New Shining Force

If you're old enough to remember the name, "Shining Force," you're a veteran gamer and probably a role-playing fan. You may also take a bit of smug solace in the fact that the young'uns have no idea that Sega's new game is part of a franchise that's very old.

Sega has launched a teaser site that's pretty simple and straightforward even if you don't read Japanese. A new Shining Force game is on the way and although we have no specifics just yet, we assume the unveiling will occur next week, on April 17 (see the date that pops up there?). The only question we have is: what are the targeted platforms? Is it another DS or PSP RPG? Or is Sega trying to produce a big-time next-gen RPG for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360? We were all impressed with Valkyria Chronicles so maybe we're seeing a resurrection of sorts; when Sega held a dominating role in this industry, we were used to such announcements. Now, after Sonic has taken his steep nosedive and other projects have tanked, some have questioned Sega's ability in this brave new world of video games. But with several key titles under their belt in the past few years, it seems clear that Sega has every desire to stick around. Furthermore, they're into reviving old franchises these days, too, so a new Shining Force would make perfect sense.

So we'll let you know what happens on the 17th; presumably, they'll update that teaser site with all the pertinent information. For now, we'll just be happy with the basics: intended platform(s), estimated release date, etc. Stay tuned.

OMG! Shining Force is one of My all time favourite games. I hope it's a next gen version but still in the old scheme of walk block by block.

Well someone does have to step up and start releasing RPGs for the PS3 so it might as well be Sega. One final fantasy game every four years kinda sucks right now. If Sega is taking up the torch then… long live Sega!!

SEGA!!

I hate the new Shining Force games, but I aboslutely love SF1! I never beat it until last year and TECHNICALLY I didn't because I was dealing the last blow on the dark dragon and my game froze AND DELETED MY ****ING FILE! *breathes* but I count that as beating the game. I plan on ACTUALLY beting it some day but I dunno when. My point is I havent liked any of the new SF games and I don't know if a next gen one would really appeal to me unless they made it really good. Who wants another Zylo? I do!

Hoping its next gen too, now here is an interesting thing because what if Sega is stepping up to replace SE in the RPG market. We still have no news of a WKC or Demon's Souls for the west, but I know I can count on Sega.

PS: long live Dreamcast baby.

Edit:lol, alienage your comment wasn't there yet when I wrote this.

Whoa! Is it just me or is Sega making a huge comeback this gen? VC, Publishing for Platinum Games and now TriAce.

If they would just retire Sonic and continue doing this kinda stuff, SEGA! will be back on top!

If they would make a GOOD Sonic game then they'd be on the top for even longer 😛 Essentially take the original Sonic games, gen them up, make the levels longer, and maker him SLIGHTLY faster than Genesis days and omg you have a great Sonic game, SO EASY, wish I could develop games 🙁 but then I'd get sued, Lol. I know I'll make the character a Porcupine.

If only they would do that instead of relying on a gimmick for each game.

Sega's explaination is that if they produced a nex-gen sonic game which was faster than genesis days then the levels would have to be huge and the amount of detail they would have to put in would mean that the development cycle would be too long.
Fairly lazy developing in my opinion.
