Devil May Cry Milestone: Capcom Ships 10 Million Worldwide

Dante exploded onto the scene early last generation to immense critical acclaim and widespread fan appreciation. The cocky hero has gone on to star in three more titles since the original, and it appears that his popularity is on the rise.

Capcom has announced that the stellar action series has officially shipped 10 million copies worldwide. The most recent installment, last year's Devil May Cry 4 , is the best-selling DMC thus far, as it managed to top 2.2 million copies sold. Just about everyone in the gaming world recognizes the title, which is why Capcom is now using "Devil May Cry" to push other entertainment venues, such as comics, graphic novels, action figures, and anime. In fact, they just announced the new "Devil May Cry" anime yesterday at the Tokyo International Anime Fair 2009, so Capcom has no qualms whatsoever about commercializing the heck out of Dante and Co. It's called business, yes? Anyway, we're all fairly certain that a DMC5 is in the works and should arrive at some point, and as the only significant slip in the series was DMC2, we have supremely high hopes for the next entry. Dante remains one of the best protagonists in video game history; a healthy departure from the brooding, reluctant hero who doesn't want to get his hands dirty. Dante will kick your ass and spit on your corpse, and that's bad-ass.

DMC4 is certainly one of our personal favorites from this generation and these sales/ship numbers are richly deserved. We were hooked on DMC the instant we played the demo that was included in Resident Evil: Code Veronica and ever since, we've only wanted more. Congrats, Capcom!

The first is one of my favorite games of all time, the second, not so much! The 3rd and 4th were both great as well.

Hang on…

If DMC4 is the best selling at 2.2 million copies, how has it shipped 10 million? even if the other 3 sold 2 mill each that would be less than 10 million, Does that mean theres a million copies of the franchise just sitting on store shelves?

What are you, some kind of math person? I'm going to start calling you Mathy McMath.

JK, but honestly it isn't far fetched to think that there are 1 mil unsold copies of all DMC games out there, worldwide.

All I know is the DMC series is hard!! DMC 4 was the best. Iono about everybody else..but I'm still trying to figure out the relationship between Dante and Nero..I'm assuming Nero is part of Dante's fam like a long lost brother or something. Which would make 3 son's of Sparda

I don't think he has any relation to Dante at all, except the for the Devil Bringer Arm

lol thanks for the sarcasm Arvis… fairnuff, i just assumed that having a 1/10 of a product developed not selling, is quite a significant proportion, naturally the retailers have to make a profit, one would assume this to be at around the 10% mark on every game, so to have one millions copies sitting on a shelf, would pretty much be the whole profit margain, maybe am just looking into it too much and this is just the norm for the industry.

It does say "shipped" and Capcom doesn't ship unless a retailer's buying. A retailer won't buy unless they think they're going to sell it. A 10% error margin on the part of retailers kinda makes sense (if you look at Circuit City for example). I'd say Capcom has their money and at the profit margin of retailers, they got their profits out of the DMC series. My 2 cents anyway.

Sorry Ultima, but I have to ask. Do you like any next gen games? It seems lately all you do is 'pass' on games.

I own all of them except DMC 4 which I rented. It is a good series, but my feeling towards the series is that it has run it's course. I like the first, the second was okay, the Third was freakin' hard, and then the 4th was kind of, Okay I've done this before. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy it, but I played it more to finish the game as opposed to enjoying it like I did the old ones. Maybe do one more to finish it off, but after that I say let it go.

You don't want the game to become another Tomb Raider..If they completely redesign it, then the fans will be choked about it, if they leave it alone then you won't attract new people to the game that have never played them.
I say let Dante and Nero go out with a bang and start a new game before the series gets stale.

That's just my opinion though, and it looks like by most of the comments here, not a lot of people will agree with me.

I'll have you know i have. Siren: Blood Curse has been the best so far, i'm getting quite addicted to Street Fighter IV. I also enjoyed Dead Space, Fallout 3, Uncharted, MSG4 and Resistance 1&2.

I'm still looking for DMC4 at a decent price, I rented it and thought it was pretty sweet (Would have been sweeter if optimized for PS3)

Have to agree with Ch1nook, make one more and close it out. Whatever happened to it's competitor Bayonetta? It looks a little corny but I wanna rent that sucka when it comes out too.

Bayonetta looks absolutely ridiculous. I'm not saying it will be a "bad game," per se, just the overt sexuality is a bit unnerving. I don't think anyone I know would be comfortable playing that game with people around. I got red-faced just watching the trailer, with all it's big, sweeping, zoom-in-on-vagina camera angles…

As a member of Gamefly, I previously rented this and enjoyed it as well, but I too couldn't escape the feeling as the game went on, that I've done this too much before. With that said, I can pick it up from Gamefly for like $19.69 plus free shipping since I've been a member for over a year and a half now.

Those who enjoy Dante's humor can watch episodes from the DMC TV series on youtube…

"I'll tell you a secret that will have customers lining up out the door." "And what is that secret?" "Add strawberry sundae's to the menu."

I love Devil May Cry and the DMC4 demo.

But come on guys, Dante's Awakening was not hard. On Normal it wasn't unless you started it on Hard then you might've produced tears. It was the 1st one I played and I had no problems.

Though, Dante Must Die mode was tough.

😉
