According to CVG, Uncharted director Bruce Straley believes that in terms of the PlayStation audience, Nathan Drake is already "up there" with the likes of Tomb Raider 's Lara Croft, popularity-wise. They asked him if he thought Drake would ever become as big as Lara and Straley responded, "Why, do you think he's already there, if not beyond that point already…?" Straley elaborates below:
"I feel that Nathan Drake can stand on his own in any line up of the video game pantheon. We've created something new with him by infusing him with traits more associated with a good movie protagonist than just a video game icon. It's not just us drinking the kool-aid either – according to not an insignificant number of reviews, press, and forums, people have really taken to Nathan Drake's character.
"I think people like him because he's compelling, and a much needed breath of fresh air in an industry that's been a bit stale for a while, in terms of characters."
All good points, of course, but Drake – who has starred in only one game so far – really isn't as popular as a character who has not only been in a gazillion games, but has also starred in feature films and basically has a cult following all her own… On the other hand, perhaps Drake really is more on the minds of PlayStation owners at this point in time. After all, Tomb Raider: Underworld was decent but nothing spectacular like Drake's Fortune was, and all PS3 owners are eagerly anticipating the launch of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves later this year. Also, Uncharted is a PS3 exclusive, and Straley is talking about the PlayStation audience…
Hmm…maybe he is right.
Drake is more popular than Lara Croft now, but not more popular than Lara Croft was. Lara Croft's time is far past and hardly qualifies as a benchmark anymore.

Tomb Raider games made me dizzy after playing for awhile. But still, it was pwnzorz. Lara's tities made up for it. :D. LoL.

I can see Drake being popular now but it wouldn't of been without Lara Croft. I played the first uncharted and it was alright a few kinks for them to work out like the controls and aiming system but good story line and graphics were good.
But the controls and aiming were much better than any lara croft game ive ever played..but I still get what your saying.
my buddy said the same thing when it comes to the aiming but i have to say ive played through uncharted 5x and 3 of those times was before trophies in i didnt have a problem with the aiming.
in my mind at least this is true. i'm excited for the next uncarted game. i've never been excited for a tomb raider game.

The story and voice acting is just damn good in Uncharted. The guy who does Drake is freaking great.
That is what got me. I still haven't picked it up but after the demo ya gotta love the humor. He has a feel to him like a wise ass friend. I am definitely getting this to hold me over for Killzone.
tomb raider was a great game for its time. But this is the tomb raider of today. no lame puzzles, and more action.
Drake is a 3 dimensional character in a world of blank slates and meaty types bordering on the mentally challenged.
Lara's boobs did get her pretty far though…
O' yes the boobies get you far anywhere. I think she'd be better off with a revamp to the control scheme and camera angles. The last Tomb Raider I played felt so stiff and clunky.

No, but it's a bit silly saying Uncharted is bigger than Tomb Raider because the latter has been around for far longer and is a genuine icon of gaming. But then it's Naughty Dog saying it and they're never, ever, wrong.
Drake has a much better attitude compared to snobby Lara IMO who thinks that she's just SOOO GREAT!!!
As far as games go…Uncharted owned Underworld…and it was a year older.

Jak and Daxter….god what a game that was.
Yea i'd luv to see Jak & Daxter this gen but no news on it,i think Uncharted totally replaced it.Some older guys don't play games like R&C,Mario,Jak&Dax and so on but Uncharted opens up to all ages.
Thus i think Uncharted is better than Jak & Daxter.
I think Drake is more popular then Lara now definitely. Surprising when you consider her breasts are now graphically better!!
I bought uncharted a couple weeks ago…Im about half way through it..Its a good game…
We have to wait and see if he will become more popular that Lara. As it stands, there are plenty of gamers who never even heard of the title of the game much less Drake. I personally like him a whole lot better, I blame this yet again on advertising.
The guy who does Nathan Drake's voice is the king of voice acting. He also is the prince in Prince of Persia and also did voices on Assasin's Creed, Metal Gear Solid 4, and many other games.

Oh yeah. Most of his characters he protrays are spot on, such as Kazuma and Roger smith, and he does have a good range to go with. Like I said, he is my favorite.

the only problem with that statement is not many people know of uncharted yet. unchared2 might fix that. however, i do like nathan drake more as a character, but from a male opinion, there's no doubting lara croft isn't half fit. games and movies.

Not sure that Drake's more famous, but his game(s) are better. He'll overshadow her boobs in no time. Specially if there's a movie coming out based on Uncharted.
I have yet to play Uncharted, although I did buy it. But from what I've seen, he def. seems like the more likeable character of the two.
Lara croft was a good game when it first came out. I never got into the sequels, and the movies were a joke. one thing though, Angelina Jolie was a perfect fit for the arrogant, snooty Ms. Croft.
In Uncharted the characters are well defined, and feel real. whereas Laura croft is portrayed as doing everything right and acting smugly self assured. Nathan Drake is more identifiable and says and does things that a real person would. he complains, makes jokes in bad situations and gets mad.

I CANNOT wait for Uncharted 2 … as for Tomb Raider Underworld, unfortunately that's just one of those games that holds me over between anticipated games. Actually, Underworld could have been much better if it were longer and had less bugs. What's the deal with these developers giving us games that are so buggy lately? I'd be embarrassed if I were them.
Examples:
Underworld: Freezes and goes to a black screen here and there.
Resistance 2: liked it, but I got the feeling it wasn't a finished product – we've all seen the Titan that likes to continue walking into a wall while we all mow him down.
Star Wars Force Unleashed: I got blasted behind a wall under the ramp during the first jedi assignment that Vader gives you. I could just see the tip of my lightsaber as it slashed back and forth.
Prince of Persia: the ONLY bug I encountered was when the game froze on me during a boss fight. But still… it froze – why?
Fallout 3: I didn't buy this game because of people saying how buggy it was, and my best friend returned it because he thought everything in the distance looked really bad. He said he couldn't tell that an object in the distance was a bridge until he got significantly closer to it. Unacceptable – especially after the PS3 version of Oblivion looked as good as it did (IMO).
