So, which of these timeless classics deserve to be enshrined?
The Strong National Museum of Play has announced the 15 finalists for this year's World Video Game Hall of Fame inductees.
As you can see below, the list includes legendary names like Final Fantasy , The Legend of Zelda , Sonic the Hedgehog , Tomb Raider and John Madden Football , with a few more recent titles also coming into play (get it?): Minecraft , Sid Meier's Civilization and Grand Theft Auto III . Check it out:
2016 World Video Game Hall of Fame Finalists
Said The Strong director Jon-Paul C. Dyson:
"These 15 World Video Game Hall of Fame finalists span decades, gaming platforms, and countries of origin–but what they all have in common is their undeniable impact on the world of gaming and popular culture. They're among the most influential games of all time."
The organization received "thousands of nominations" from people around the world, and an advisory committee comprised of journalists, scholars, and "other individuals familiar with the history of video games and their role in society" helped shrink the pool down to the 15 titles you see above.
In order to be considered, games had to "have enjoyed popularity over a sustained period and have exerted influence on the video game industry or on popular culture and society in general." The winners will be announced during a ceremony at the museum on May 5.
Last year, the first ever inductees into the World Video Game Hall of Fame were: Pong , Pac-Man , Doom , Super Mario Bros. , Tetris and World of Warcraft .
A little surprised no Mario.
Its already on the Hall of Fame.
Must have been 2015? I think I remember that now. I also remember saying "I'm a little surprised no Legend of Zelda" and here it is in 2016.
But… But its on the article ser.
Personally rooting for pokemon. Gave me a childhood when all we can afford back then was a gameboy.
Too recent your childhood is young padawan.
The 90s was still a great time to be a kid. 2000s on the other hand…
Well, I want to say Final Fantasy because it became the greatest franchise of all time until SE put a dagger through its heart with the word "Action" engraved in the blade but the first game was really just a handy step up from Dragon Warrior. It were no Zelda, let's put it that way.
So, Zelda.
All great choices, but no one else should go in until Final Fantasy, Zelda, and Sonic's histories are in. All 3 revolutionized gaming at some point in history. The rest are just really great.
Space Invaders should probably be in because it's sort of the origin of gaming posterchild next to packman and pong.
