As Sony is celebrating PlayStation's 20th anniversary, they wanted to ask the community : Looking back, what were the absolute best PS1 titles of all time?
Well, the poll is now closed and the votes have been tallied. The winners have been announced and unsurprisingly, the legendary Metal Gear Solid is the winner.
Final Fantasy VII was the runner-up, which also makes sense, but I think some might be surprised by the third and fourth titles on the list: Crash Bandicoot and Crash Bandicoot: Warped . …really? I've obviously underestimated the fan-base for these games. I knew they were good but to put them ahead of titles like Gran Turismo , Castlevania: Symphony of the Night , Resident Evil , Final Fantasy Tactics and Chrono Cross …? I'm not sure that's right.
But I never got into the Crash games in the first place, so I don't know. I played them but they didn't grab me; obviously, though, they grabbed many others.
Not all that surprising, Crash Bandicoot is a legendary series.
Played the heck out of Warped, game gets better once you get some of the upgrades like continuous spinning.
& I still have my MGS triple disc in great condition.
Blasphemy.
Garbage, troll of a poll. Crash is something you find at a garage sell for 1$ and play because you have nothing else to do. Which would explain why it got so many votes. The new generation of young punks who don't know any other PS1 classics. You wouldn't find FFVII or Castlevania SoTN at a garage sell would you? Think on that fellow gamers.
I don't believe many young punks were voting in that poll.
Metal Gear Solid was leaps and bounds ahead of everything on PS1 imo and deserves to win.
Although Phantom Pain is a brilliant game it is far from being the best in the series imo.
Why from far from the best? Just curious.
I voted Metal Gear. Syphon Filter and Crash Bandicoot.
Crash was my game I got with the PS1 when I bought it brand new from Dixons for £150. I loved the Crash series of games.
I never played Grant Turismo. Castlevania Symphony Of The Night or Final Fantasy so how can I vote for games I didn't own or play.
ah man i loved syphon fliter!
1. Metal Gear Solid
2. Resident Evil
3. Silent Hill
4. Syphon Filter
I never finished a Crash game. I didn't like running towards the horizon line. At the time I preferred platformers as SIDE scrollers or free roaming, like Mario 64 or Tomb Raider.
I'm guessing Crash got some votes in part because its a Naughty Dog game. And PS fans love ND.

Obviously there was a lot of (then) kids who had a Playstation and now have fond memories of those games. I don't think that in itself should be surprising.
Consoles are quite common amongst kids, it's often there they were introduced to gaming.

That's only partly accurate.
Nintendo and Sega consoles are common among kids. By the time PlayStation came out in the mid-'90s, the industry had been around for nearly 20 years, and many gamers of a certain age were going for PlayStation. When I was in high school, for example, PlayStation was the console of choice, as many of us felt we'd "grown out of" Nintendo and Sega. PlayStation was the first console to really have a bunch of adult offerings, as we saw it.
The idea that only adults played PC and only kids played consoles has always been wrong, anyway. I played more games on my computer than on my SNES or GameBoy when I was 10; it was PlayStation that actually made me play more games on console, because I was getting older and because games like Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo and Resident Evil (among many others) seemed highly progressive and were definitely geared toward an older age group.
Point is, there is a lot of kids (<13) that game on a console. It was, and still is. And based on that fact it should be no surprise that also "kiddo style" games rate high on such a survey, since many who now vote on these kind of surveys were kids back then.
Regarding kids today they don't game on PCs any more (simply put – not without exceptions of course). They game on mobiles, pads and consoles.
Decades ago the "home computers" was the consoles of that time. So I think it was more common with "kids on computers" back then than now. Far more. Unfortunately!

None of that explains how Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy VII were 1 and 2 in this poll, however. Definitely not games for kids; MGS was far too difficult and FFVII was too complex for most 8-year-olds.
I worked in gaming retail during those days. I can tell you the average age of a PlayStation game purchaser absolutely was not under 13 years old. It was more like 20.
Obviously because it wasn't ONLY kids back then, Ben! That's why #1 and #2 are who they are.
Never do I claim *only* kids played on a Playstation. What I say is "there is a lot of kids (<13) that game on a console. It was, and still is. And based on that fact it should be no surprise that also "kiddo style" games rate high on such a survey, since many who now vote on these kind of surveys were kids back then."
Those who were older back then (like you) would vote for MGS and FF today, while THOSE WHO WERE KIDS BACK THEN – AND THERE WERE EVIDENTLY MANY OF THOSE – vote for the kids games today cause that's what the Playstation was to them. To THEM. Not everyone, but to THEM.
Many enough to have those titles reach #3 and #4.
Had a huge majority been <13 they'd likely reach #1, no?
Regarding age, for the youngest gamers out there it's not uncommon to have older family members purchasing the games for them, so customer stats at the counter in a game store isn't really that reliable to get an idea of the average age on the ones using the games.

It's good to see Metal Gear Solid take the top spot. Even though I voted for MGS and Crash Bandicoot, I'm really surprised that Crash ranked so high on the list. No, I wasn't a kid when Crash came out.
I wasn't a kid when Crash came out either. I was mid 20 when I got my ps1.
So I didn't play Grant Turismo or Final Fantasy. I'm not into Final Fantasy as a game it's just not for me.
I think there should be another poll to survey how many people haven't actually played which game on that same list.
