The original PlayStation launched almost exactly 20 years ago. Now, here we sit, enjoying the fourth great console.
After two decades of entertainment, which memories stand out for you? Which ones will be with you forever? Were you one of the first to enter the PlayStation fold or have you only recently discovered the obviously superior brand? 😉
Here are a few to get us started:
— Seeing Battle Arena Toshinden for the first time on the original PlayStation. Up until that point, we all thought such 3D fighting experiences could only be had in the arcades.
— I didn't really care about Metal Gear Solid (yes, I know, shame on me, but I caught up later) but Final Fantasy VII remains one of my favorite game of all time, and when combined with the incomparable Final Fantasy Tactics and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night , I was in heaven.
— Playing Twisted Metal 2 co-op for hours on end (I was always Warthog).
— The launch of the PS2. To this day, I haven't seen anything quite so nuts.
— Reveling in Grand Theft Auto III , thinking, "man, this should be impossible in video games but isn't." It began my love affair with open-world games (which has admittedly lagged in recent years simply because they've continued to be shoved down my throat).
— Thinking Resistance: Fall of Man was so damn great it almost made the $600 launch PS3 worth it. Almost.
— Stumbling upon gems I never in a million years thought I'd like. This includes Fear Effect , Gitaroo-Man and Katamari Damacy . Yeah, remember those?
Okay, your turn.
Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII-XI, Uncharted and the Last of Us.
Way to many. The first time I read GAMEFAN about FF 7 coming to PS1. PLaying Tomb Raider. Playing Resident Evil at home alone, with the lights off, and getting scared when something came through the windows. lol.
Crash Bandicoot. Soul Calibur. All the smaller rpgs nich rpgs. Just too many good games on the ps1.
The ps2. Same thing with all the fantastic games.
The ps3 didnt hit it's stride until the later half of it's lifecycle. But once it did … wow.
lots of moments.

I beat Dracula X on my Vita last night. It's end boss and lines are basically the same from SotN's beginning. Cool eh?
I read into the wikia on it. The changed lines of SotN dialogue in the handheld game are more accurately translated from the Japanese source.
Also, the director views this game (Rhondo of Blood) as the big turning point for Castlevania as does most of Japan. Where SotN had that status in the west.
I remember critics raving about the PC Engine Rhondo of Blood import back in day.
It was cool seeing how the two games RoB and SotN tie together. RoD is the best classic style game in the franchise where SotN is the best Metroidvania style.

My absolute best are:
Metal Gear Solid (especially the beginning)
Tony Hawk
MVP Baseball 2005
Final Fantasy Vii. This one because I'd never played an Rpg before and I got it based on ads alone. I've never finished another since.
Why didn't you finish another RPG since? Did you not like VII?
I loved it. Nothing was ever as good or captured my attention the same way.
I'm a big fan of horror game, so I gonna say Silent Hill and Resident Evil. Oh man, Ps1 and ps2 have so many great horror game, it was the best moments in my life…
*High five*
Silent Hill 3 raised the bar for me, the atmosphere…. my god the atmosphere..
There's so much good stuff from Sony and the Playstation brand. I started to name off bunch of games but rather than do that I'll just name one from each generation.
Twisted Metal
Socom 2
Uncharted: Drakes Fortune
So far this generation I havnt had time to reflect yet. But I've enjoyed every game I've played so that's a huge plus.
So many gaming memories but I'll reduce it to 1 per system.
PS1
Staying up all night playing the original Resident Evil during the summer of 1996 with my friend Bobby at his place. The game terrified us but we couldn't stop playing. A few months later we were playing Overblood simply trying to feel that same excitement RE had given us but sadly we'd have to wait for RE2.
PS2
Ico was an incredible experience but it was just a stepping stone for what awaited me in Shadow of the Colossus. In 2005 I had been a gamer for nearly two decades. Playing SotC made it all feel new to me again. The open world had such a realistic feeling that kept me immersed in the game. I felt sorrow for each colossus I defeated. I played for weeks. I cried, like a baby, at the end in awe of the connection to Ico. Also overcome with emotion having completed an incredible journey. I feel bad when I find out someone hasn't played the game.
PSP
At the time it was an incredible media player. I loved the PSP for the games but I also loved its ability to play music and videos. It was a great talking piece with travelers when they would see me watching a movie on it.
PS3
Final Fantasy XIII. Oh how long I had waited for this game. I bought it on Day1 like I have for every previous game in the series. I spent months counting the days until it would be mine. I planned my schedule so I would have the most available time once the game released. About two hours into the game I had the feeling of "This sure is a long tutorial". At the 6 hour mark I had the feeling of "WTF is going on". At the 10 hour mark I realized I couldn't deny the reality. The game I bought a system for, the franchise that had delivered to me thousands of hours of gaming joy had dropped a shiny turd on my lap. I finished the game. There was a small bit of hope in the back of my mind that kept me playing till the end. Once beaten the game has never left the case. The first in the series I haven't beaten twice, hell four times at least. I will however say the soundtrack is amazing, beautiful, and sad. It's one of my favorites but sadly it reminds me of how disappointing XIII was/is to me.

what a tragic PS3 story.
Same here. I rememeber looking over at my wife and saying "what the hell did square do to?".
My wife would poke fun by reciting some poor melodramatic lines of dialogue she heard while I played.
Overall I didn't feel the crushing blow on FFXIII. I still liked it even if it was different and rediculously linear (until the last areas). Maybe FFXV will do something better.

FFVII in for the first time from start to finish. People sometimes forget, it looked amazing compared to everything else up to that point with the CG opening. The PS Mag preview for FF8 was awesome, too. The anticipation!
PS1 – Fear Effect, Syphon Filter, MGS, Bushido Blade, Tekken 3, Dino Crisis, Clock Tower, Broken Sword, Resident Evil.
PS2 – MGS2, Snake Eater, Resi Evil 4, The Bouncer, Primal, Haunting Ground, Silent Hill 2 & 3, Forbidden Siren 2, The Getaway, Shadow of Rome, Onimusha series, Rule of Rose.
PS3 – Uncharted series, MGS4, The Last of Us, Bioshock series, Dead Space.
PS4 – MGSV, Until Dawn, Bloodborne.
All of these games bring their own unique memories for me. Snake Eater is still the king of the bunch though imo, that game was just perfect imo.

Well I've only had the PS3 and the PSP so it'll be short from me. 🙂
But THE biggest moment of all was to see GTA on the PSP. That they managed to cram such a big game on that tiny thing was unbelievable, and to drive around, yet again, in Vice City on that device was, well, unrivalled as a Playstation experience.
HALO COMBAT EVOLVED
FFX, the first CGI in the beginning when Tidus was either relaxing or doing mental training for his last Blitz in Zanarkand, after that everything just went BOOM and I was amazed.
Best memories? Hmm I would say that it's PSX era when it was all fresh. And, the first parts of every major series now, impacted me the most. There is no denying that it all started in late '90s.
too many great moments 😀
My favorite moments have always been booting up for the first time. Nothing can beat the nostalgia I had the first time I heard the boot sounds on the original PlayStation. As for games, I will always remember playing Twisted Metal, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro The Dragon, Jak And Daxter, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9, and 12, Tekken, and Resident Evil each for the first time. But if I had to pick one defining moment for me personally, I would say getting a PS3 for the first time. It was the first console I ever bought new (my PS2 was used and my brothers and I had a shared one before that). I was so giddy with excitement that day!
The first time I played Twisted Metal will always be one of my favorite memories because I was introduced to something at the time that was so different but also exactly what I was looking for eventhough I didn't realize it.
For actual games. The yacht scene in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City stands out.
