According to The Hollywood Reporter , the recently released "Need for Speed" movie starring Aaron Paul ("Breaking Bad") managed to just about break even during its opening weekend.
The film brought in $17.8 million in North America and $45.6 million internationally; the $63.4 million total almost reaches the $66 million needed to make the film. Maybe it's not surprising to see it do poorly in this region (by now, everyone knows that movies based on video games are often mediocre), but at least it'll make a little money. Said Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis:
"It's a disappointing start on the domestic side, but to open to that number worldwide and nearly match the budget of the film is great. This was a very affordable movie and with many territories left to open, everyone will be just fine. We feel great about where we are."
The film finished third behind "300: Rise of An Empire" ($19.1 million) and "Mr. Peabody and & Sherman" ($21.2 million). Personally, I never even understood how a game franchise about racing could even be a movie, although developers did try to infuse more of a story in some recent entries. Those stories sucked, of course, but what do you want? This is about fast cars and that's that…only gets you so far in a film, though.
Hmmmm, I wonder if Ford got any significant rise in sales due to their Mustang being the featured star in the NFS TV commercials.
The trailers and storyline seemed so cheesy for me, so I'm not surprised it performed the way it did. Internationally, it may seem less cheesy. I know from a little experience that what seems lame here in NA can be cool elsewhere lol.
I'm glad it's already close to breaking even though.
Seriously though, not digging the story line Disney.

I am liking Aaron Paul a bit more after starting Breaking Bad. It's a good show (really funny) but I don't see this total greatness everyone else did.
How far along are you? I didn't think too much of him through season 1. I liked him much more as time went on. Which kind of makes sense. They were originally gonna write him out, but kept him anyways and were happy they did not.
I still feel sick about the topic material though.
Breaking Bad is one of the best shows I've ever watched. Season4 being my favorite. This movie however looks terrible.
I'm only at the end of Season 1, the material disagrees with me a lot as well but I try not to hold it against the show.
Keep with it, each season is better than the last. As for the material, come on…it's just Meth.
World, I almost didn't make it past season one. But trust me, it only gets better.

I got through it because of Cranston, primarily. I also identified with Walt Jr. a fair bit.
There is an episode involving a kid whose parents are major addicts. I had a hard time stomaching that episode. Other than that, it was bearable.
Maybe I'm just unique but I find it impossible to lose interest/enjoyment in a product as result of any offensive/mature content. My dad was in Vietnam and refuses to watch anything depicting war (Saving Private Ryan being an example) so maybe I've just lived a rather yummy life. Why are you guys having an issue with the content of the show?
My sister is a meth addict and I got to watch it destroy her soul and turn her into a barely living husk.
Omg World…that's terrible, I'm sorry. Why would you watch Breaking Bad?! I totally understand if you don't care for the content and I'm surprised you're even attempting to watch it.

It's alright dudes I've mostly made my peace with it. I still like quality entertainment because I don't think real life tragedy should limit creative freedom, it just means I have a different perspective on it sometimes than other folks.
I think we talked about this once before, World. That's just not cool man. My sister had issues too. Not around anything as harsh as meth, but certainly around the most negative of abuse you could imagine. Coping mechanisms have some common themes in shows like Breaking Bad that I don't handle well. It's also why I hate people using a word like "rape" to describe how great they were at a particular game or sport. It's just a disgusting word, ya know?
And having worked at street level social services for a few years, I've made my fair share of calls to Children's Aid. So that episode I mentioned brought up a few memories of kids in brutal conditions.

I bet tons of people that saw it had no idea it was based on a video game. Am often shocked by how little some people know about video games and have talked to several people that had no idea this movie was based on a long running game series.
Well we do get virtually all of our video game media off the internet by checking up on gaming sites like these.
Actually, after country taxes, aside from whatever subsidy the film got for the country it was shooting in, you can only count 1/2 of international sales. And marketing is normally about another additional half of the budget. So, they need closer to 80-100 million to break even on this flick.
I actually heard it was a pretty good movie. First you have to be into cars though. I plan on seeing it based on feedback. It seems positive.
Saw it last night with my son. The movie is really, really dumb, and really, really fun to watch.
I seen it on Saturday night. It was watchable. If you like the Vin Deiesl Fast & Furious 6 movies you will like this. Fast cars, watchable. 🙂
I like cars, but there is no way that I am going to watch NFS just to get a fix of fast cars doing awesome things. My movies need to have a bit of substance to them and, from what I gather, NFS has less substance than F&F. I don't even know how that's possible.

It was a joke but I must admit I love the F&F series. I've enjoyed all of them except for Tokyo Drift. I don't consider them deep films but they have great action scenes and likeable characters doing fun things.
Tokyo Drift is one of my favorites of the series. It's good in the sense that it got the series back on track. F&F2 was such a disaster that Tokyo Drift in its own right was good to watch.
So now we have to put up with more of this filth….. great
It's not filth, it's a dumb movie that's very successful on its merits. It's Fast and Furious meets Smokey and the Bandit, and it's a great dumb time.
In fact, it's really obvious, in a good way, when the movie is paying homage to various NFS games in the movie. The early stuff in the city is Most Wanted, the cross country stuff is The Run, and the finale is basically an ultra HD replay of your best Hot Pursuit replay ever, only 1000 better done than you could ever manage.
The plot is garbage, but who cares? It's a movie about cars, and the cars rightfully take front and center, and do so impressively.
Moreover, the better videogame franchises in general do at the box office, the more likely studios are to take chances on game IPs that you might want to see on the screen.

I saw this on Saturday with my sister and thought it was ok. Agree with all the comments that the story was a unoriginal and a little disjointed.

The racing was enjoyable aside from 1 scene with the Mustang which was more Knight Rider. It was good that there was almost no CGI in the movie.
If you want something deep and meaningful then don't bother but if you want to see an pleasant racing movie for 2 hours and are happy to leave your brain at the door, then why not.
Also, Michael Keaton is in it.
amazing and incredibly scary that 66M is considered a affordable movie in that industry.
i mean 66M in this would be considered a massive amount of money to spend on a game.
ok there are some that cost more, but very few.
boggles the mind how a amazing game can be done for 50M or so, but even the most basic simplistic bare bones movies still cost 16M more.
and for what?
where did that 16M go?
films, one of the most outrageously overpaid industries out there!
there swinging around in the most expensive dresses and suits out there, supplied to them by their creators, to amazing extravagant award ceremonies.
and the people who actually do the real work are slumped over a stove heating up their chicken soup out of a can!
