Gran Turismo 5 DLC And Online Support Shutting Down Soon

Well, sure. The new one is out; whatcha still playing the old one for?

It has been confirmed that developer Polyphony Digital will be closing down the online services for Gran Turismo 5 on May 30, 2014. Furthermore, all downloadable content for the game will soon disappear from the PlayStation Store.

If you want to continue to keep any DLC you have, be sure to review the complete instructions for each piece, because the extra content will be gone on April 30, 2014. If you've already purchased and installed these packs, they can be downloaded again in the future, with the exception of the Paint Pack and Racing Gear Pack. Lastly, Gran Turismo TV will finish up on May 14, 2014, and the service will be taken offline on March 14, 2014.

Don't sweat it, though. All this means is you have more time to focus on the recently released Gran Turismo 6 . Plus, don't forget that GT7 may be closer than you think…

I've been slacking so much with Gran Turismo 6. I bought it, then I got Killzone: Shadow Fall. I completed Killzone, I just got Tomb Raider for the PS4 (loving it so far) and I've yet to finish the International B events U_U. The thing is, Gran Turismo is so time consuming. For me to make considerable progress is GT I have to basically dedicate a good weekend to it lol.

Oh man! Anyway, back to Tomb Raider. Later

Thats why online sucks, it's timed.

Indeed. This is the sad reality of online content and service.

While your PS2 will live on forever, your PS3 will be unsupported eventually. Which makes you think, the online content that you bought, are not really yours to keep (multiplayer maps etc.), more like a rental.

This is one of the reasons I don't buy games that are basiaclly multiplayer only, especially when EA is running the show. They are the worst when it comes with keeping servers up.

EA would have shut off the servers a year and a half ago!

Not just multiplayers, I worry what will happen to the updates that are there day one to patch the unfinished games. Does this mean, 10 years from now when i pop in a disc, it will be glitchy?

It's pretty much like that now to be honest e.g. Battlefield 4.

As far as the future goes? Yeah, if you pop in the disc for a broken game 10 years from now it'll be broken with no means of fixing it. Some of us like to go back and play old games sometimes and the release and patch model works against that.

Wow, that's really shocking on the DLC…. I thought that would be available on the Playstation Store until they decide to shut down the servers for the PS3 Store – Which I would expect to be Ages away but to loose the access to DLC now… that just proves how DLC is not future proof. What is worse is GT5 has an Academy Edition which contains the DLC… on a code… will all DLC in the future not be accessible… I cannot be the only one concerned on this.

I'm not concerned by this particular event.

1. If you've bought the GTAcademy edition, there's no reason that it shouldn't have been redeemed already. They should also have a expiration date anyway.

2. GTAcademy edition is no longer for sale and why buy it at this point if GT6 is out?

3. By May, GT6 will probably get a reasonable price cut, maybe down to half.

4. GT6 will have all of GT5's content and DLC ON DISC, plus much more.

5. Why still play GT5, if the sequel's has been out for half a year? It's not like you're upgrading to a new console and the game costs hundreds of dollars. You got the early notice, so save up 30 or so bucks to upgrade to GT6 by May 30th.

6. In PD's case, server is heavily limited. I rather they focus the server load and resources on their latest game. They're not like EA and M$ where server resources are practically unlimited.

The big thing is that the sequel is out and being supported. If it's like WKC2, where there is no sequel to play on, but online support is shut down, that's where my real concern is.

Stuff like this is why I hate the digital future. If you have it on disc then you have it but what if it's downloaded? Did they charge for the Paint Pack and Racing Gear Pack? If so, what happens with the people who bought them and may have switched consoles or upgraded hard drives but didn't re-download the content? This is not a good thing!

If it comes to that, at least there's GT6 to play with.

It's just the way GT5 was structured. It's the first game PD experimented with DLC. With GT6, it's seamlessly integrated to the game data, so there won't be any problem like this.

I believe that Polyphony's intentions were good from the start but it's all part of the undefined and nebulous nature of digital goods. There are no "best practices" or defined rights for consumers with these items. What are you paying for? What ownership rights-if any- do you have and what obligations do the developers have toward you?
Valve has announced that if they ever go under they'll release keys for all of the games that their customers have purchased through Steam and GOG doesn't mess with DRM at all but it's up to each individual company to set their own rules and they can change them at any time. This was driven home to me recently when I read an article on TrueAchievements that certain titles for Windows Phone had been delisted. I had bought several of them and deleted them eventually to free up space but when I looked, there were no links to any of them on the Marketplace. Unless those games are on my phone then I'll never be able to access them so what did I buy?
There's no settled law on this and it makes me increasingly nervous about this hobby if things like this become more common in the future.

I hate that I suck at racing games. I have tried many times to really hunker down and actually learn, but there's just no use. I can hold my own in stuff like MX vs. ATV or even Burnout, but those aren't GT. Man… I watched a good friend of mine do an enduro in GT2 on a Seattle course. Took about 8 hours and he came in first. I wish I could do that. *le sigh*

I was planning on buying this at some point for the single player experience, but was hoping to get a good racing wheel first.

Guess I'll just pass on it if the dlc that comes with it isn't actually going to be there.

this is an interesting subject and it's hard to explain well that is saying if they pulled what i think they pulled
ok heres what they did with some WKC DLC even though you downloaded it their was DLC you couldn't access without accessing the server Aka geonet

so they litterally pulled all DLC from WKC1 and WKC2 because they didn't remember which was which

im going to say gran turismo 5 is the same exact way honestly tieing DLC to Server is Stupid as far as why should you play the old game when the New game is out

Because take for instance Need for speed hot Pursuit 2 for PS2 for example
for me it is the Best Need for speed ever made so my point being people could like the gameplay of GT5 over GT6

There was something "off" about the handling in GT5. The music was amazing though. Lot's of classical piano tunes which was hilariously awesome. GT6 totally reminds me of the earlier entries to the series (three comes to mind) yet only better in every way.
