Maybe I Need A 3DS To Sate Burning Old-School Desires

I never wanted a Nintendo 3DS. I still don't want one…well, not really.

I really don't play many handheld games anymore. If I'm going to play a video game these days, chances are, I'm going to be playing on one of my home consoles.

However, over the past few months, it has come to my attention that the 3DS has a few titles that I might really want to play. The Wii U? Waste of money. I'd never touch it with the PS4 and PS3 hooked up. But the 3DS…who knows? Maybe I'd end up playing it even more than the Vita, which gathers dust far too often.

Last year, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds really blew people away. I had to check it out before our PSXE Game of the Year Awards ; I wanted to see if it might win "Best Non-PlayStation Game." I borrowed a friend's 3DS to play it and wow , I loved it! I haven't played a Zelda I've actually liked in many years; Wind Waker and other titles just didn't do it for me. Then I see this cool feature article at GameSpot, saying that every Final Fantasy fan should play Bravely Default .

As I was forced to subject myself to the colossal mountain of disappointment that was the Lightning Returns demo , I've been pretty down on FF lately. Something like Bravely Default could be just what I need. I could always go back and play the real FF titles, like FFVII, VIII, IX, X, etc., but I've done that already. Bravely Default has gone over very well with a certain type of JRPG fan; my type, in fact. I never really cared much for the anime angle of it but I've always loved those "old-fashioned" mechanics. So, is this another great reason to have a 3DS? I think it is.

I wonder if there are other titles I'd be interested in…might have to do some research. 🙂

Folks are talking it up. Can't justify a purchase of another handheld though. I was wondering if FFIII on Vita was worth it.

Bravely Default does look awesome, but I don't even own a Vita yet. So there is no chance that I am going to pick up a 3DS.

Do it! I got one just for fire emblem and Pokemon, and everyone would love fire emblem if they just tried it. And I've pre ordered bravely default. So I'm def a pumped 3ds owner

After having never owned a handheld prior to this generation, I now own both a Vita and a 3DS (I don't own a console since I live overseas). I now have almost too many RPGs to play, if that were actually possible. Something else to keep in mind is that the 3DS has physical backward compatibility with the original DS, which had a ton of old-school RPGs incl. Radiant Historia and the Dragon Quest series.

Same here.

I was waiting for a Resident Evil game to hit the PSP before becoming a handheld gamer. But it never happened. So I've been mostly a console gamer for most of my life.

It wasn't until early 2012 when Resident Evil Revelations came out for the 3DS that I bought my first handheld. I'm a big Resi fan, so I just had to play the game.

I mean JRPG's are pretty much dead on consoles, but it's quite a different story on handhelds. The 3DS has a lot of them.

If you like those type of games, the 3DS is basically the SNES of handhelds at the moment.

I had absolutely no interest in the 3DS unil my little brother got one for christmas. I started playing it and I'm hooked, it's reminded me of all the fun I had with the gameboy colour back in the day playing pokemon, super mario, donkey kong…Oh Nintendo still has a place in the gaming world.

Wow, I feel old saying 'back in the day'…I'm only 21.

If you feel old now, just wait until the music you listened to in middle school/junior high starts turning up on oldies radio.

I have a 3DS, two actually because of region locking. I love it. I bought it for handheld games I couldn't get on my Vita. Fire Emblem Awakening is my favorite on it. The Bravely Default demo was good and I have it preordered. I say get one if you want one.

I love old school rpgs. I play them on my big screen tv. I love the 3ds games and would buy every rpg they had, but I cant see the small screen to well anymore. Now, if they can someone put the 3ds games on the WiiU so I can play it on my tv …………………..

I'm feeling the same way about the 3ds Ben. I'm thinking I may just have to pick one up to play some Bravely Default. Just don't know if one game is worth it.

And is that Zelda game really *that* good? I've been watching videos on it and I can't help but feel like I've played it before. Does it do anything that I didn't do in A Link to the Past so many years ago? Is it just a nostalgia trip that links me to my past?

(Like what I did there?) 🙂

It does a LOT that the old Zeldas never did, and yet, it retains the spirit of the old games.

That's why it's SO good.

My 3DS gets more game time than my Vita currently, but to be fair, it depends what game I'm in the mood to play and whether or not I've recently purchased a new one. Having said that, I got the Vita because it looked like an awesome handheld, and it is, just seriously lacks games as all. The only reason I have a 3DS is for pokemon :p God I love those games!

I always think about buying one when I see on on the shelf at whatever store I'm at. But at the end of the day, I can't justify the purchase and it just isn't the same as a big ol' television to play on.

It's an awesome system with an amazing lineup of games, no question. Take a look at fire emblem awakening and the latest etrian odyssey. An old jrpg/strategy RPG fan like you may be VERY interested 🙂

I hear you on handhelds in general. It's just fundamentally less appealing than console gaming for me, and who has time to play yet another gaming system? That's why as much as I like them both, the vita and 3ds just don't get picked up nearly as often as the dualshocks do. But man, 3ds is truly fantastic. I doubt you'd regret picking one up, considering the great lineup of games and even genres that you can't really find anywhere else.

If you are an RPG fan then you must own a DS or 3DS. If not you're only hurting yourself.
I could be wrong but the comments make it sound like people don't own it because they're anti-Nintendo. I say enjoy your games regardless of who puts them out…unless it's Activision.

Picked up a 2DS (to save money) and have not regretted it in the least. As soon as the Vita starts getting more attention, I'll happily turn my 2DS over to my wife. Until then, I'm consumed by Rune Factory 4, the Bravely Default demo, and LEGO City Undercover.
