Ultra-Rare NES Game On eBay, Bidding Now Over $5,800

Yes, I'm aware that we exclusively cover the PlayStation market. But we also love anything that's just silly cool in the gaming industry.

And this qualifies.

If you're a hardcore video game collector, you know there are some very difficult titles to locate. One of them is the extremely rare Nintendo World Championships for the NES. A grand total of 116 copies were manufactured and distributed back in 1990, and these were handed out to winners of a special competition. It was never available at retail, so it's tough to find.

Now, a copy has showed up on eBay . As you can see, the bids are over $5,800 now and there's still a ways to go, as the auction doesn't end until tomorrow. This is despite the ripped label on the cartridge, but seller "muresean" promises it's only cosmetic damage and the game works fine.

He added:

"The cart plays just fine and may some day be worth much more if someone decides to investigate a forensics lab's involvement to see if they can determine the official number by running tests on the cart."

Nintendo World Championships included abridged versions of Super Mario , Tetris , and Rad Racer . For the special competition, participants had to rack up the highest score possible in all three games in only 6 minutes. All 90 semi-finalists got a copy of the grey cartridge, while some golden cartridges were given to participants as part of a Nintendo Power promotion.

So, gonna ante up?

What's worse is the seller has the cart opened up… I really cannot see why anyone would want to own this, even if it is a collectors piece the condition is far to damaged to be presentable…

So is this just a variation of 6 minute demos or full games on the cart… Not that it matters for that price of course.

I think you missed the point that it's ultra rare. It may not be worth that much to you, however being that you literally never see this game anywhere, means it's got value to others.

It's ultra rare… But look at it… The cart has been opened up, it's in a real state, have they even confirmed it works… I just don't have a collectors mentality… To me this is garbage.

@Ultimadesires

Another man's garbage is another man's treasure.

My brother has been collecting bumper stickers since the early 80's. Not sure why he started that. But he recently sold one bumper sticker for over $500.00 – Bumper stickers are garbage to me but hey, if someone wants to spend $500 on one, who am I to argue.

I don't think that they were ever boxed in the first place. Bigrailer is correct; it comes down to the rarity of the cart. In 2010, a copy of Bandai's Stadium Events went for $41,300! The generation that grew up playing games on the NES is it's mid to late 30s and not only do they want to recapture a part of their youth, but many have have a lot of disposable income and they're willing to spend it. Admittedly, it's a bit daft but collectors work by their own rules.

Edit: I just checked the eBay listing and the auction ended just shy of $100,000! At least the seller was generous enough to include free shipping! 😛

The label was torn and the cartridge is opened. How do you determine it will work? Im sure ppl remember how hard it was to run these nes games without nlowing it every time you insert

That's it, I'll have to sell the 20+ NES games I still have (and the system). I have a couple of games that are rare. They may not be great, but I'd imagine they are rare. Like did ANYONE else play Nightshade? My dad bought it for me in like 1993 because it was a detective game

*** edit ***
crap Nightshade is only fetching $10 on ebay currently. I'll see what else I have

Seriously it is at $55,000 right now. That is insane, especially for the condition it is in.

This must be that game featured in The Wizard. Didn't Fred Savage play these three games in the movie?

$98.00 from being $100,000.00 dollars for this title. That is insane. That will never happen with digital. +1 for physical.
