Grand Theft Auto V Tops Call Of Duty: Ghosts For 2013 Crown

Many wondered if, after an extended absence, Grand Theft Auto could really topple the undisputed king.

The king, of course, being Call of Duty . Activision's billion-dollar franchise has reigned supreme on the sales charts for years, but the latest CoD entry didn't manage to capture the top slot for 2013. Nope, it was GTAV.

The NPD's software sales data is in, and Take-Two's hugely popular title was the top-selling video game in the US for 2013. Furthermore, because Bioshock Infinite and NBA 2K14 performed so well, GTAV publisher Take-Two Interactive was the top publisher for the year.

GTAV is "within striking distance" of the previous franchise record-holder, San Andreas , and that's after only four months at market. As for the month of December, Call of Duty: Ghosts did own that month, with Battlefield 4 , Just Dance 2014 , Madden NFL 25 and NBA 2K14 rounding out the top 5. For the year, Ghosts was an easy second, followed by Madden NFL 25 , Battlefield 4 and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag .

It's worth noting that these figures only include physical copies sold at retail. As times goes on, that's going to be a more significant omission, so the NPD should get on that somehow.

I yearn for the day when people finally get sick of online shooters. Maybe then we can get back to having some variety in the genres as the big publishers desperately scramble to find "the next big thing".

COD Ghosts is available in almost all platforms while GTAV is only on PS3 and 360. That's a very good job for GTAV! congrats to take-two..

Impressive but not surprised. A lot of us said for a while that GTAV would dethrone CoD.

what a sad day for gaming. I HATED GTA 5. limp over done story overdone graphics and skin textures and lighting. add in that the freedom of previous titles was neutered and i was one all too glad to return to redbox customer. the more i read these articles about what titles top sales the more i want to invest in a gaming pc and nvidia shield. my favorite genres, platformers and fighting games, arent dead, but are gimped at best.

Thank God
Call of duty does not deserve a fraction of the money they make.
Same crap every year no efford what so ever just.
Just ripping the crap out of your customers year in and year out.
If a game deserve's to die than this it.
I really hope people are starting to waken up.

Although I would sooner buy GTAV than CoDG, I'm not sure this is a fair comparison because GTAV was out a full two months earlier than CoDG. I imagine if they were released on the same day we may have had different results.
