Hello Games: Insurance Won’t Cover Flooding Losses

Insurance people. 'rolling eyes'

A bad Christmas Eve storm "totally flooded" the Hello Games studio in Guildford, UK. That's a really sh**** holiday present, isn't it?

Well, it's not getting any better, as the developer tossed up a depressing Tweet , apprising us of the ongoing situation:

"BAD NEWS! Had a 'hilarious' call with insurer yesterday. Small print is if you are in a flood risk zone, you are not insured for flooding."

That really sucks but as before, the team is trying to maintain a positive outlook. Later, another Twitter update said that just because insurance won't compensate, that won't stop them from "setting things straight." The studio lost almost everything in that flood, including a bunch of necessary office stuff, furniture, computers, etc. The developer produced the excellent Joe Danger games this past generation, and the small crew is currently working on the ambitious No Man's Sky for next-gen consoles.

Keep your heads up, guys!

Sounds like the kind of crap we had to deal with down here when hurricane Katrina hit. Except with that insurers flip flopped back and forth depending on the coverage you had. If your house washed away, then they said it was wind damage, and vice versa. Insurance is a joke to begin with. We pay money in case something happens. Shouldn't we get our money back when it does?

exactly why i refuse to pay for "insurance".
there first in line to take your money, but when it comes to giving you what you paid for, they dont want to know you.
even phone insurance, i had phone insurance on my phone when i signed my contract.
18 bucks a month for 24 months, then when i went to claim they said sorry you have to have had the contract for minimum 12 months before you can claim.
and theres a 280 dollar claim fee on top too.
so in other words if you want to claim you have had to of given them 500 bucks before you can claim.
mind you a brand new model is the same, 500 bucks,
so whats the point of insurance?
spend 500 through insurance to get a new phone, or spend 500 bucks and buy it outright.
wheres the value for money in that?
insurance companies are THE scum of the earth!
they have no problems taking your money, then when something does happen they squint and squirm every way they can to get out of paying.
i paid you my thousands of dollars over the years, so now its your turn!

Not being funny, but I live in the UK and know for a fact that they aren't in a flood zone. Insurance company just looking for any excuse and obviously found some way of getting away with this excuse . Joke.

I just hope they recover from this. No mans sky looks amazing, and like an actual next gen idea.

It would be a shame if this studio went under because of mother nature and a crappy insurance company.

Hoping the best for these guys.

As an insurance agent I can tell you that if you are in a flood zone the company is REQUIRED to divulge to you that damage due to flooding (which is defined as outside water coming into your property and doing damage) is not covered. Other things that aren't covered under a standard policy are earthquake and terrorism.

This is something that should have been pointed out to the company by their agent. If the agent failed to disclose that flood wasn't covered, there could be a claim made against that agent's errors and omissions policy.
