Square Enix Accidentally Releases Aerith DLC For Lightning Returns

Who thinks Lightning dressed as Aeris is just plain weird?

Anyway, there was a snafu concerning some Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII downloaable content. As reported by Dual Shockers , the DLC that brings the Aeris costume to Lightning Returns was released early and completely by accident.

It was only supposed to be available in Japan to those who purchased the V Jump Strategy Guide. But for some reason, Square Enix suddenly tossed up the costume for sale as DLC a few days ago, which broke the exclusivity deal they had made with Shueisha. They put a stop to it when they noticed, and they also halted distribution of Cloud's iconic outfit and Yuna's Kimono from Final Fantasy X . Here are a couple Tweets that explain and apologize:

"A notification and apology for Aerith’s costume from Final Fantasy VII. We’re reporting the circumstances about the the interruption of the sale of this DLC on Friday, December 20th. This DLC was available as an exclusive bonus to be released with a publication by Shueisha, but has been sold due to our mistake."

"About this matter we apologize for the inconvenience to everyone and more than anything to our customers and to Shueisha. We will resume today the distribution of Cloud’s costume from Final Fantasy VII and Yuna’s from Final Fantasy X. We apologize to everyone that was waiting for the DLC."

I still say it's uber-strange to see Lightning dressed as Aeris. Talk about two completely different characters in two completely different types of games… The other difference is that I actually liked Aeris.

That company is run by semi-intelligent monkeys. I guess that's good news for whoever got the DLC before it was planned to be released after it was used as a cash-in.

I don't have a problem with Lightning cosplaying as anyone but it's sad that they are using stuff from games that people like to sell a lame collection of cutting room floor junky sequel to a franchise that should have only ever been one game with a protagonist that never should have left that 1 game.

Well Lightening is pretty awesome is Dissidia Duodecim. Not because of anything she says but because she was an excellent fighter. Other than that though, I agree.

Fully agree, here series should be able to stand on its own and not have to resort to unrelated nostalgia. Them features have nothing to do with XIII's world and the hing is this is often called 'fan service' as a fan, I just find it utterly distasteful.

In previous FF's the art team would design certain costumes for the party, which began part of what you envisioned when you though of the character. In having the player slap on random junk as a costume it sort of devalues the original presence. Take Lightnings costumes in XIII & XIII-2, very original and iconic for the character, if you look at each costume you instantly think of the certain game, while having custom made costumes just losses the presence, I had the exact same problem when Tekken Tag 2 forced customisation on us, all I need modding as unlocking the original costumes…

I hate this company. I said it in the other FF post. Sell the damn franchise to a company who gives a damn about good games and making RPG's that are worth playing.

I think I'd rather have Lighting dress up as Cloud than Aerith. They have at least a few similarities…

I always read this stuff about Japan, like violating any of their numerous social protocols can ruin someone's entire career. And then stuff like this happens, which must be the result of some ridiculous failure of communication somewhere along the line…just makes you wonder. They seem to take everything soooooo seriously and yet they screw stuff up all the time.

It's all a bunch of archaic nonsense really.

Know what also bugs me? Look at the screen shot. The handle on the basket is glued to her arm. She isn't holding it at all.
