Bungie: Current-Gen Versions Of Destiny Aren’t “Dumbed Down”

Sure, you would prefer having one of the next-gen versions of Bungie's ambitious multiplayer-oriented shooter, Destiny .

But if you can't swing it, and you've still only got the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 when the game arrives, don't worry. Bungie has made it clear that the current-gen iterations won't be "dumbed down" because the project was designed with "scalability" in mind.

This is according to the latest developer update , in which the team said Destiny 's engine, Grognok, was made with the intention of releasing cross-gen:

"We knew when we started on this game that we would want to release it on a lot of boxes. We also knew that, among all the trails that our Guardians would blaze, some of them would lead to the next generation of gaming.

Thus, we built ourselves a new game engine that would let us bring the noise to a lot of consoles. Basically, we can envision a big, beautiful world in our development environment, and then deliver that world to consoles in a way that maximizes its capabilities to make magic happen."

Destiny is in development for the PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360; a PC version has not yet been confirmed. You can bet that most big multiplatform games for the next year or so will be available for current- and next-gen systems, simply because the userbase for the next-gen consoles won't be anywhere near big enough for publishers to hit lofty sales goals.

Sure they are, it's not a big deal.

If the PS3/360 versions aren't dumbed down then the PS4/XOne versions are just not very advanced. Simple.

Lol, basically.

I don't understand the logic when devs claim this stuff. It seems nothing but bullpoop.

I know, it's ridiculous to try to make the claim that your fancy new game is just as great across old and new hardware. Makes no sense logically.

Depends a bit on the genre I think, but yeah logically it most definitely must mean it's not a game that fully utilize the new hardware.
But then again I don't expect that from *any* title this early.

I'm curious what he means by dumbed down. Obviously the graphics will look worse, but was he talking about gameplay? If so then I wouldn't expect anything drastically different between the two.

Unless this is about the AI and all the possibilities with the memory the PS4 has and they just aren't using it for Destiny, then I guess it is dumbed down.

I still don't know what he means by this O.o

Me neither, Xenris.

What Bungie was talking about, is that the only difference between the two consoles is the graphics.

They won't look nearly as good on current-gen.

Was there really that many cross gen games back in 2006? I can think of any. Seems like many games are this time around are trying to serve both generations.

FIFA 14 is on PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP AND PSVita. That's the mother of cross-gen.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance I think?

Ugh, I always forget about those sports titles!

I think I just must have been too tired last night to think of any! I've thought of a couple more too: Need for speed carbon and Call of Duty 3. Of course I remember now how much interest/scrutiny there was with CoD 3, between last gen and current gen, and x360 and ps3.

Sports titles don't even count as games to me 😉

Even Call of Duty: World at War was on PS2, even though COD4 wasn't on it.

Destiny 1080p and 60fps only on Playstation 4.

Honestly, it doesn't look that advanced graphically, so it should be possible.

There is still a lot of time for them to work on polishing everything up in these last few months. I don't think it's releasing until spring, right? Also, I'm finding that youtube just haven't done justice to some of these games running at 1080p and 60fps. For example I noticed that the downloaded mp4 clip at 60fps for Resogun looked much better than the youtube 1080p version.

My definition of "dumbed down" has nothing to do with graphics, but all to do with mechanics?

The concept of Destiny is actually starting to grow on me, it could end up being a decent foray into MP gaming for me if I decide to take it up. Not free to play? Good, ability to go it alone? Good, story stuff that isn't just a few lines of text? Good.
