Ubisoft Abandons Online Pass Due to “Blurring Of Lines”

There weren't many fans of the online pass, anyway.

Ubisoft has confirmed that they're ditching their Uplay Passport program; the online pass will not be used in any of the publisher's future games.

Although the company says they created the online pass system to give customers "full access and support for online muliplayer and features," things are changing rapidly in the industry:

"However, games today are blurring the line between offline and online, between what is 'single-player' and what is 'multiplayer.' Based on that and on the feedback we received from you, we recognized that Passport is no longer the best approach for ensuring that all our customers have the best possible experience with all facets of our games."

This is good news to me, because I didn't like hearing that the Uplay Passport would actually be necessary to access certain single-player elements . Ubisoft follows EA's lead, as EA abandoned their online pass program in May, and I doubt we'll hear a lot of people complaining about these disappearances. Let me just play my game, thanks.

It's still present, but I've read that the pass will be free on Live and PSN for everyone, new or used purchase.

They finally realized that it wasn't used games screwing up their bottom line as much as they thought.

Also probably saw that these passes hurt sales more than helped them.

The one downside to losing uplay particularly is that simply by playing the game you gained points which could be used in any other uplay linked game you had.

I'd like to see that element in more games. reminds me a little of the old days when you unlocked stuff in games rather than having to pay for them, only this way you could unlock things in other new games because of those you've already played.

Having to buy it if you bought the game 2nd hand was a turd though.

So, was this in response to ACIV? Or did they just include it in that game just to annoy people with it one last time?

I look forward to reading how this one is superior to the Xbox720, or more appropriately the Xbox720p

Now if they would just get rid of that damned "premium" bull crap, the gaming world would be better off.
