September NPD: GTAV Sparks A Big-Time Industry Resurgence

See? Just needed some GTAV to make it all better.

The NPD sales numbers for September have been released and get this- Grand Theft Auto V represented more than 50% of total software sales in the US for the month. That's nuts . Take-Two's blockbuster also tallied the highest first-month sales of any previous launch in the franchise.

With such a mammoth release leading the charge, total industry sales rose 27% year-over-year to $1.08 billion for the month in question. NPD Group analyst Liam Callahan said that number only represents about half the total consumer spend, as it doesn't include used sales and digital revenue. When you do that, the sales rise to close to $1.9 billion, which is much more impressive.

Said Callahan:

"The launch of Grand Theft Auto V this September was a much needed shot in the arm for the industry. Overall retail sales across hardware, software and accessories were up 27 percent versus September 2012, lifted by software sales of Grand Theft Auto V."

As for hardware, Nintendo's 3DS nabbed the top spot, outselling the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita for the fifth straight month. Interestingly enough, the PS3 actually beat out the 360 in September, which snapped the 360's 32-month streak from January 2011 through August 2013. Yes, 32 months. Americans just can't get enough of Xbox. Wii U sales rose 200% thanks to a $50 price cut, although overall hardware sales fell 13% to $183.2 million. Yeah, everyone's waitin' on the new generation!

Software spiked 52%, up to $754.3 million; again, thanks mostly to GTAV. Accessories were up 2% to $142.3 million and rounding out the top five games for September: Madden NFL 25 , NBA 2K14 , Diablo III and FIFA 14 . It's good news to see Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX coming in at #6, too.

Guess we should all thank Rockstar for revitalizing game interest in these troubled times.

Are those numbers strictly North America? Cuz it would make sense more so than if it was world wide, but then again I am sure the game is popular everywhere.

Keep playing!

of course GTAV is going to lift the years sales records, i mean it is THE biggest history in the industry!
hell one of the biggest in the history of the world!
if theres ever a day where a GTA game releases and does not lift sales records, its either a f*cking amazing year where everyones just leapfrogged R*, or the fears are true and the industry truly is dying.

had to laugh today antivisions taking chops at R* saying all the records they stole will be back home next month.
in that case im going to EB tomorrow to buy 5 copies of GTA to try make sure that does not happen!
please, if there is a god out there, he would not let the tripe that has always been CoD outsell one of this industries finest!

This is not a resurgence since only one game is selling.A resurgence would be several different games selling extremely well like in the PS2 days. This just further hurts the industry as other games will struggle or get pushed back (Watch Dogs). No gamer should be happy about this.Arkham Origins will struggle because of this so called resurgence.
