Tom Clancy Passes Away At 66

One of the most prolific writers in American history is gone.

Respected author Tom Clancy has passed away at the age of 66, and fans everywhere are saddened. His military-themed novels have generated a great many movies including "The Hunt for Red October," "Politika," and "The Sum of All Fears," as well as numerous video games, such as Splinter Cell , Ghost Recon and the upcoming new title, The Division .

Clancy co-founded Red Storm Entertainment in the late 90s, which would go on to create perhaps his best known game franchise, Rainbow Six . Publisher Ubisoft purchased Red Storm in 2000 and have since done well with the Clancy games. Ubisoft released a statement after learning of the author's death:

"We are saddened to learn of Tom Clancy's passing and our condolences go out to his family. Tom Clancy was an extraordinary author with a gift for creating detailed, engrossing fictional stories that captivated audiences around the world. The teams at Ubisoft, especially at the Red Storm studio, are incredibly grateful to have collaborated with and learned from him, and we are humbled by the opportunity to carry on part of his legacy through our properties that bear his name."

If you were into politically-fueled premises and military adventures of all kinds, you knew Tom Clancy. And you probably liked him, too.

oh man, I liked the political mumbo-jumbo of Splinter Cell games. I never really understood what they were saying but it made me feel like I was doing something pretty important.

Always a little saddening to hear that extremely talented people in their fields passing away, and Tom Clancy definitely falls into that category. I never could get into his books, but that doesn't mean they weren't quality.

Never played any of the games or read the books but I did see some Jack Ryan movies. Sad to lose a respected author.

This was a tough newsflash for me. One of the first big novels I ever read was Without Remorse – the backstory of John Clark, the leader of the original Rainbow Six team. The man's books are head-and-shoulders over his games, but his games are pretty excellent as well. He will most definitely be missed.
