Grand Theft Auto V 's online mode isn't quite ready yet; it'll be ready to go on October 1. But when it does launch, some players may be surprised to learn that real money could be part of the experience.
According to Reddit user 1880 , it seems Rockstar might be utilizing microtransactions. There is a file in the store selection of the GTAV menu (currently empty) that cites "Cash Cards." These range from $100,000 to $1,250,00 in value.
Here's a description of those cards:
"Cash is king in this town. Solve your money problems and help get what you want across Los Santos and Blaine County with the purchase of cash packs for Grand Theft Auto Online. All purchased cash is automatically deposited into your character’s bank account. Spend wisely, cash therapy is fleeting."
Of course, it's possible that these cards were only designed for the sake of testing, or they could be prizes for virtual sweepstakes events. At the same time, it does seem somewhat suspicious and with a game the size of GTAV, maybe microtransactions only make sense to Rockstar and Take-Two. If they do go this route, what'll be your take?

If any game can get away with charging you actual money for in-game money it's GTA.
No one should "get away" with anything bad.
The stupid, naive, corporate slave, loyal and so on crap has got to stop.
There is nothing wrong with giving the option to pay to unlock more in game money and things of that sort like how it is on Jetpack Joyride AS LONG as it's just an OPTION and you can still get everything without paying and just playing in a fair way. Meaning, you get in game money, etc in a fair way and fair amount of time. It's unacceptable if it takes forever, to hard, too much to do, etc just so some people will pay real life money because it's too hard, etc.
And the sheep will open their wallets without hesitation.
Well this is interesting. I would rather they just give the multiplayer to people who bought the SP game and then charge people who want to buy the MP seperate a lower fee. I heard this is what they are doing anyway.
However maybe the multiplayer is going to be free to play with micros?
I dunno, what I do know is I am interested in the MP and dont really care at all about the SP in this game.
The video preview of what you can do in the multiplayer sounded incredible.
Well that's a first for me hearing that.
If you do a google search you will find that gta5s multiplayer is going to be stand alone. Unless I miss read/heard something which is possible.
Nevermind, I was wrong. The article on Gametrailers said it was a standalone and basically everywhere else said they don't have plans for it to be a stand alone.
Well dang, that sucks 🙁 I'm really not interested in the single player for this game.
Oh well.
No way would I do this. It's GTA. Micro-transactions hurt me deep :'(
It's set in the industry's stone now, oh well.
dam man more in game real money buys seriously is the cancer of the video game industry.
happy gaming =)
As a gamer I am firmly against spending any money on micro transactions, I paid for the game, they said it includes multiplayer (that I have no interest in anyway), why charge me more for in game items.
As an investor in Take Two (TTWO) I wholeheartedly support anything that increases profits for the company, this in turn means a higher stock price, this means more money for me. I say monetize more in game items if people are willing to shell out the money.
I hate it, I love it. NO! YES!
I'm so conflicted.
Cmon… You guys are making well over a billion dollars, and now you want to throw in microtransactions? i wouldn't care about a weapon pack DLC or whatever. But microtransactions, using real money for in game money, no. Don't sink low R* you guys can't.
I am kind of against any pay to win mechanics. If there was any PvP in GTAO then I would say its crap, but if it is just buying money for in game items and stuff then I suppose it isnt as bad.
Nope, not happening, but I am still going to make sure I play it ans park a helicopter ontop of another player.
So you're telling me that I will spend my real money for virtual money so that I can look cool or have more cool weapons/outfits? How childish is that? That takes away the fun and the challenge of unlocking things yourself.
Rockstar and Take Two have enough money, they don't need more of my money. What would be better is to trade the virtual money for real life money. That would be better!
This might not be so bad. Bioware had Commendation packs for the people who participated in the weekend challenges for Mass Effect 3 multiplayer and this might well award in-game cash for people who particiapte in special events. They did make use of double XP weekends in Red Dead Redemption after all. I'm not ruling out the worst, but I'm hoping for the best.
Why would I buy a money pack when there's a ton of people in the world i can rob??
You'd be robbing for weeks to make up what you can do with a single transaction.
True…but with heist and innocent bystanders I don't think it'll take too long..
I would have expected this kind of nonsense from EA, but Take-Two? I don't take anything on reddit at face value so I'm going to withhold judgement for now. If this turns out to be genuine though, then I'll be deeply disappointed that a publisher smart enough to give Rockstar 5 years to make the game is dumb enough to pull this crap
does'nt bother me unless it gives other players an advantage.
or we're forced into it.
