Pretty damn far. In order to capture the genuine sounds of the street, which players will frequently hear as they explore the diverse, dynamic city of Los Santos, Rockstar went the extra mile. As game producer Lazlow Jones said during an interview with Chicago radio station WGN (as cited by VideoGamer ), the voice recording process involved real gang members.
"There's black gangs, there's Latino gangs, and we recruited a guy who gets gang members, like actual gang members, real gang members. I mean, El Salvadorian gang dudes with amazing tattoos and one of which literally had gotten out of prison the day before. And we brought these guys in to record the gang characters because, you know, you don't want a goofy LA actor who went to a fancy school trying to be a hard gang member. There's nothing worse than that."
Doing this also helped the writing, as the developers could learn if real street toughs would actually say the lines in question. Jones said it was a matter of generating a realistic environment:
"They look at the lines and they say, 'I wouldn't say that. If I was upset at another gang, I wouldn't say that'. So…say what you would say. Authenticity, you know? There's a lot of sessions that we would have where we would just throw the script on the floor and be like, this thing we wrote is irrelevant, let's just work out something real."
I know what a lot long-time, old-school GTA fans will say in response to this. They will say that Rockstar should've stuck with the over-the-top, totally un realistic style of GTAIII, Vice City and San Andreas . These fans believe GTAIV went awry; they don't want "authentic" and gritty. They want rag doll craziness and jet packs. Well, that's understandable. But at least you've got Saints Row if you must go nuts, right?

in unrelated news…three Rockstar employees robbed, two stabbed and one robbed and stabbed the next day
only kidding but im sure more than a few people there were a little worried about having gang members in the office for the day, even if they were good guys about it all
I'm sure they were careful about who they brought in and on what days. Could you imagine if a production assistant booked two opposing gang members on the same day? Oh dear. I'm sure they must have had some sort of chart to help them figure out that kind of stuff. Also, I wonder if employees got memos ahead of time to on what not to wear on certain days (don't want to get these guys upset with wearing the wrong colours)!
Interesting. Not sure how it'll impact the game, but interesting. I just hope they've got the balance right this time. GTA IV was amazing while you were playing it for the first time, but once you took some time to step back and reflect… it was kinda dull and not great. The Episodes remedied that somewhat, though.

Like Ben said, if you want a goofy and immature sandbox game, then you should buy Saint's Row.
I for one, am very happy with the turn towards awesome storytelling with that touch of authenticity that Rockstar has been bringing to the table since they made GTA IV.
The goofy GTAs were fine, but there's more that can be enjoyed in a sandbox game than just being over-the-top ridiculous all the time.
I for one just want them to start making the stuuf they advertise in game. The shows on the Weazel network or have the radio shows. I always like the peripheral stuff in GTA more than the story they are telling. The story stuff is always a bit serious, whereas the extra stuff they do for giggles is what I would prefer. Make those things more in depth would make a complete game for me.

Am I the only one disturbed about paying criminals for doing what they do? Exactly what society needs, encourage REAL crime & violence and give the criminals exposure in the game…
Who cares if it's "authentic", and well where is this authentic city of Los Santos anyway?
I'm sure the game will be great and I don't mind game violence, but this is stretching it…
I for one am glad that Rockstari is putting this insane amount of detail in the game This type of authenticity doesn't wane the fun factor. I'm sure that there are other humorous peds in the gta 5 world.
I use to like the Saints Row series for their wacky take on the opwn world crime drama but i detest that same over the top zany action. GTA 5 seems to retain some of the humor the series is known for while including some nice realisim such as the aforementioned news.
Side note: Training Day also had real gangs in the movie. The same is true for Michael Jackson's Bad music video
I knew a dude in the Michael Jackson "Bad" video. He was my sisters hip hop dance teacher, Arty. He's wearing a red bucket kangol and a yellow tank top. He passed away some time ago, but he wasn't a gangster. Also Wesley Snipes is in that video. He could be considered a gangster in some ways, but not the LA street gang way.

I hated GTAIV simply because I had to maintain relationships with friends and girlfriends in order to progress the story. I feel that if I have to do these things in real life, why would i want to in a game.I play games to escape reality, not to imitate it.
