We figure we know what to expect with Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain .
Like MGS4, it'll probably be a blend of stealth and action, only with the addition of more freedom. At least, that's what we've been told to expect. However, the team may be holding something back…something pretty big.
During a recent CVG interview , boss man Hideo Kojima teased a "big surprise" for the new MGS installment and added that it's something we've never seen before in the world of video games, which is quite the statement:
"Specifically for the next-gen and Metal Gear Solid 5, it's not necessarily about breaking the fourth wall, but we do have a big surprise for the players in this game. We have challenged and pushed ourselves with something that movies can't do but only games can do. It hasn't been done before."
So, what do you think it could be? This franchise has always boasted a very strong and in-depth narrative, along with great characters and settings. Kojima almost always puts the story first, so do you think it involves the plot somehow? Or is it more tangible, like a new gameplay mechanic? But if it's a mechanic, is there really anything we haven't seen yet in the world of interactive entertainment? Oh, I suppose there is.

He's probably overstating things.
Not probably, most likely.
kojima? the guy who spent the last decade crying outloud every single mgs release was his last and that he was going to work into something else, over stating things???? yet he only released mgs after mgs. no way!!!! 😛
Kinect compatible.
Oh god no!
Well… I have no idea… I donLt think it will be anything story related, but something we have never seen before, it better not be some iOS integration… No I expect more than that. But I know I will find out! I'm really hoping for a release date this Gamescom,
My guess is how the story is played out.
A codec on the back of the game box… 😉
What I really hope it is is David Hayter being somewhere in the game as some character, but then again that isn't something you could say hasn't been done before.
The only other thing he could do is somehow make the WHOLE MGS universe turn out to be a video game soldier simulator and the fourth wall gets broken kind of like how it did in MGS2 but taken to another level?
That or you beat the game and someone shows up at your house with a present.
Maybe it's something to do with various platforms. Hasn't he earlier talked about including mobile and web into the MGS5 package? So maybe something you can do on your mobile that will affect the content in the console game.
Like, a wall poster with some image you've taken with your mobile, or stuff like that.

The option to choose an outcome?
That sure has never been done in a Metal Gear game, but I really hope that that's NOT it. Doing that will only make the story more convoluted as it is. There are games where player choices serve a purpose (Mass Effect, The Walking Dead, etc.) but I don't see that working well in any Metal Gear game as they have definite stories to tell.
I agree with you. People don't know the story as it is.
As The Phantom Pain is set in the past, this just won't be possible. Because the story has already progressed post the story of 'The Phantom Pain'. The story will have to follow one outcome. Some may not like that, but considering the high standard of the the storytelling in Metal Gear, I am all for it.
MGS5 isn't going to be like the masterpieces that MGS2 or 3 were, and won't be stealth and action (less stealth and more action than 2 and 3, sadly), Kojima said it's going to be like the previous, sadly, it will probably be less stealth and more BS action.
Interesting :). I'm not going to try and second-guess Kojima, he's an excellent creative with a tonne of ideas, it could be playable bananas for all we know (note – am not sure whether this has been done before, although I don't think so, although I'm pretty sure one of the Saints Row games had a banana outfit, but that was a playable human that looked like a banana).
the king of overaggeration and teasing?
yea, suffice to say ill be keeping my expectations low……..
one thing i HATE about this industry, weve become the kid sitting outside a gym eating ice cream in front of the people working hard to get fit.
massive teases, and overhyping things beyond belief!
if i had a nickel for every time something was overhyped in this industry, well, lets just leave it at id never have to work another day in my life!

Knowing HK I will and won't be surprised; figure that out.
A game demo for zone of the enders buried as an easter egg or side quest in MGS V
All his games have been great. I've high hopes for MGS V – no exception.
As for the comments about Kojima always wanting to finish this series – last bits being 'his last' Metal Gear. It's just like Snake. The world isn't ready for a world without Kojima.
DAVID HAYTER COMES BACK AS SOLID SNAKE!!!!!!! OMG SO **** SHOCKED!!!
…..
NOT!
