The Wolverine Writer Is Now Rewriting The Assassin’s Creed Script

Maybe someday the movie will actually show up in theaters.

Ubisoft has a half-dozen movies in the pipeline, as they seem insistent that all their major IPs should be turned into feature films. Their biggest franchise, Assassin's Creed , seems to be tailor-made for the silver screen. Could be great.

However, they've been talking about it for a while, and we haven't heard much in the way of progress. Now we learn that the script is being rewritten. According to a Creative Screenwriting interview with "The Wolverine" writer Scott Frank, the "Assassin's Creed" script is in his hands:

"I'm rewriting Assassin’s Creed right now, and what I love about it is that I've never adapted a video game before and it has its own set of challenges. Especially in the world of rewrites, I love trying to do something completely different if I can."

Frank received an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for "Out of Sight" in 1998. He also wrote "Minority Report," "Marley & Me," and "Malice," among other credits. If you're wondering, British playwright Michael Lesslie had written the previous draft for the AC film, and we know Michael Fassbender ("Shame," "Inglorious Bastards") is on tap to play the protagonist. Not sure if that's the right fit, but…

No idea of Frank can get this right. That script may pass through many hands before anything happens.

It is one of the biggest disappointments for me thus far this year.

The entire script for the first PIRANHA movie was written during a coast-to-coast flight, so don't be thinking any script rewrite takes a while. 😉

He's got some good credits to his name, I'll say that much. And I didn't mind Wolverine. Seemed to focus on the human side of the character, much as was the case in Iron Man 3. I'm willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt.

Not sure on whether he can get the script to Ubisoft's standard (I'm hoping that it isn't a straight adaptation. The lore of AC is ripe for the picking without needing Altair, Ezio, Connor or Edward or any other introduced Assassin in the lead role), but they're going to push on anyway. I mean, it does already have a release date set for June 2015.

And I think Fassbender can pull of the role. He has a really good range and I'm reasonably certain that X-Men: Days of Future Past is going to show off how well he can do action.
