July NPD: NCAA Football 14 Tops A Relatively Bare Month

Another monthly sales decline but the next generation is just around the corner!

The July NPD results are in , and overall US video game sales fell 19% to $443 million, down from the $549.1 million tallied in July of 2012. But again, NPD analyst Liam Callahan explained that these numbers only represent about half the total consumer spend for the period, which is an important clarification:

"When taking into account our preliminary estimate for other physical format sales in July such as used and rentals at $134 million, and our estimate for digital format sales including full game and add-on content downloads including micro-transactions, subscriptions, mobile apps and the consumer spend on social network games at $593 million, the total consumer spend in July is just under $1.2 billion."

Hardware fell hard again, diving 34% to $99.4 million, but that's no surprise, as we all know many avid gamers are waiting for the new systems to arrive. And the old consoles haven't seen a price drop yet, which may come with the emergence of the next-gen machines. As for software, total sales fell 20% to 222.3 million. NCAA Football 14 topped the charts, while Minecraft for the Xbox 360 and The Last Of Us for the PlayStation 3 came in second and third respectively. Accessories were down 3% to $133 million.

I wonder what the industry numbers will look like in December…

Hopefully the release of PS4 and Xbox One, along with some big Nintendo releases for Wii U will get things going in a positive direction again. It's depressing reading these reports every month to see the industry continuing to slide. Seems like it's been that way for two years now.

Props to Injustice. It's been going strong for a while now.
