Well…okay.
It's common for the biggest franchises in video games to receive big-screen adaptations. But did anyone anticipate a movie based on Gran Turismo ?
According to Eurogamer , Sony is indeed planning to bring GT to Hollywood. "The Social Network" and "Fifty Shades of Grey" producers Mike de Luca and Dana Brunetti have signed on, but there's no word on a cast just yet. Universal's "Fast and Furious" series continues to do well at the box office (a seventh entry is in pre-production even as we speak), so it's clear that brainless movies can succeed…so long as it has hot cars. Besides, Dreamworks is working on a "Need for Speed" movie, so why not a GT movie? Cars going fast can equal popularity.
It still seems odd, though. NFS always had that movie flair in my estimation, as it has always been just as much about attitude and style as it has been about racing. But Gran Turismo is a simulator; no babes in bikinis and no mangled attempts at a storyline (like Need for Speed: The Run ). So I have no idea how one turns this into a film, but it looks like it's gonna happen.
Sony! Get the writer of Initial D to join and it will be great.
Eh it won't happen just like how there's no Uncharted or God of War movie, so fans shouldn't worry.
This Gran Turismo fan isn't worrying at all and that's even if the movie comes out.
The one thing a GT flick has over the others is a low budget. You don't need crazy special effects nor do you need to follow a story.
It's an open canvas really.
Perhaps it's a documentary-like movie?
I'm of a fan of Jackie Chan's 1995 movie Thunderbolt. That to me, was the closest thing to Gran Turismo. That Evo III and Mitsubishi GTO he drove instantly reminded me of the game. It was because of GT I knew of such cars and seeing them in a movie was just awesome to me.
I just hope they don't go too much F&F or NFS with hot chicks and bikinis. It's just not GT as you say.
I actually read that on the Planet and now I am planning on watching the movie… maybe.
I might want to hold off until I see what the plot is on it!
NATHAN FILLION SHOULD BE IN…oh…I guess it doesn't matter who'll be in it. Of all the Sony franchises they can turn into movies they greenlight this?
Hm… one of the objectives in the simulators was obtaining your licenses, so… maybe the plot can revolve around an amateur driver working his way into the pro circuits? I dunno… It will take an incredible amount of creativity to pull it off. Especially if they are going to adhere to the game itself… which will be difficult considering the game has, er, no story.
I think this could be really cool. If they do it in a way of like following a driver through his career. Much like Ron Howards F1 Rush movie.
Could be really good in Yamauchi gave them some guidance.
Cars have got to be front and centre.
I think Sony is going a little over board in making their games into movies. There's an Uncharted movie, a Ratchet & Clank movie, and now a GT movie. It worries me a bit, because if they don't turn out well, then the franchise will die just the tiniest bit.
Totally agreed. It´s a bet, but it might turn out well for them. Take Resident Evil for example. In fact I don´t know why there isn´t another silent hill movie, I liked the first one very much, although a little bit gore-ish would be nice 🙂
i'm not sure about this unless like you say it's like a rockie working his way upand we root for him or smething.
happy gaming =)
That Ron Howard movie Rush about the rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda looks very sweet, so making a good car movie can't be that hard.
If they could get Ron on as even a consulting producer, I think a GT movie could be awesome.
As long as Michael Bay stays the hell away from the GT movie, I think it could be a decent movie no matter what.
