We're all anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Final Fantasy X remaster, which should be out later this year.
If you're wondering how much "newer" the game will look due to the slick high-definition upgrade, check out this latest comparison video.
This is the introductory scene of the game, where all the characters are sitting around a campfire. On the left of the screen, there's the old standard definition presentation. On the right is the HD upgrade, so it's easy to see the differences. Everything is much cleaner and crisper, obviously. Perhaps the one thing that captures the significance of the visual upgrade best is Tidus' necklace; check it out when the camera zooms in on his face.
FFX HD will also come with Final Fantasy X-2 HD, which makes it the most anticipated package of 2013, as far as I'm concerned.
Thanks, Zak!

Final Fantasy X looks to be the best hd upgade! Their Hair looks fantastic. Game already wins best rpg on ps3. They should of showed X-2 because the screenshots I saw awhile back looked awesome
Nope. Look at the Wind Waker old vs new.
I can definitely see the potential in Windwaker being extremely pwetty.
You should check it out. It looks like a current gen game. The graphics held up well over the years but with their new lighting and shaders and the wii u hardware specs, the game looks fantastic.
I dont know what Wind Waker is but Ill be sure to youtube it…
It's a Zelda iteration that caused a lot of ruckus for being cel-shaded.
I remember that. I had my doubts about the new direction too but once I got my hands on it I absolutely adored it. To this day is one of my favorite styles.
zelda in cell shading?
BLASPHEMY!
plus, he did say on ps3 so cant disagree with wind waker unless nintys suddenly decided to ditch the wiiu and go third party.
Can't wait for this. I'm getting this on Vita.
Ahhhh, makes me remember when these games had emotion and good characters. Looks great, can't wait.

The original Final Fantasy X does not look THAT bad! The image is not as soft as that nor does it have such aliasing issues.
I have to say I am still not convinced on the new character models. They just look weird and liefless look at this comparison:
Original:

HD:

While the textures are more detailed the colour and expressions look flat. The expression in Final Fantasy X were quite good considering it was an early PS2 title.
I had the same problem watching that interlude video. When Tidus looks out to the sunset it doesn't reflect well of his skin tones unlike the original ruining the impact of that moment…
I will no doubt get this but I think I may start playing through the original just to experience it once more. At least this trailer didn't have spoilers about the results of the pilgrimage. I cannot believe S-E's last story trailer.
"The original Final Fantasy X does not look THAT bad! The image is not as soft as that nor does it have such aliasing issues."
No idea what you thought you were playing, but it absolutely had those issues. it was even noted in most reviews of the time.
I'm not that impressed with this either. I thought God of War 2's conversion to HD was better from what I am seeing. That could change though as I see more.
One should note that they aren't redoing just the basics like God of War II, they are using better models in combat and also redoing FMV.
Ultima, those supposed "originals" are ABSULTELY NOT taken from a PS2's frame buffer. Period. The resolution on that is way higher than the actual game. Those are taken from some sort of emulator with amped up filtering. Whoever did this comparison has scewed the truth.

Here's an accurate depiction. Resolution and all. Complete with crappy interlacing. So stop your moaning and be happy. Crap.
I didn't look at the links until Temji chimed in. Dude, he's right. That "original" shot is NOT from the game running on the PS2.
Yes it was taken from an emulator. But It is still all the data from the original just running with filters. The point of that was to demonstrate the change in the character models. The more I compare the two I really dislike the new Tidus model. The facial structure really does remove the sense of character from Tidus. I hope they keep all the original voice acting. This new 30 minute audio story told post game has me concerned. Sure, Tidus had a annoying voice – No one can deny that. But it really suited the immaturity of the character and how Vulnerable we is in this 'new' Spira.
Soooooo we're saying that the improvement is actually even better than it looks? Fine by me.
I think the new version looks fine but certainly not the best we've seen. God of War comes to mind and the Wind Waker HD almost looks like a current gen game with its added shaders, particle and lighting effects.
I do agree with Ultima on one thing. They do look much more doll like in the HD port. Square failed to capture the alive look that the previous version has.

I dunno dudes, they don't look alive at all in the original to me. Not just based on this footage either but of the many times I've played it. Maybe they did at the time…

I made my own enhanced version of the HD remake. Look colors are brighter and more contrasting now!
In like 15 secs I adjusted the lighting in gimp so it POPS more. So much crap people people fall for.
Anyway, that supposed original is 1440×1080. Yah, the PS2 rendered that… HA whatever.
You don't see animations very well, either, due to the fact everything happening in this video is slow.
They move very smooth and realistically now. Look at the part juuust prior to stopping and looking at sunset. Watch Tidus walk up the hill to his standing point in the HD side. It's much much smoother. The animation I mean, not the textures.
btw, in Gimp all I played with was the brightness and contrast. You know? The settings we can use on our TV's? 😉
Hey Mason you're good with the computer graphics and such and I always enjoy looking at your creations. Would you be interested in collaborating on the occasional video game related comic strip? Sometimes I get funny ideas and I've basically let all of my artistic ability lapse.
I always like ideas for projects, World. Beamboom also wants to create a video game. The thing is my time is really limited, what with school and family and all, where I don't nearly get enough done on the personal projects I have going already. There's some projects I have for myself involving character and environmental modeling that have to get done before I tackle anything else. These have a precedent because they're something I need as part of a career portfolio.
Thanks though. I hope you get something rolling with your ideas and goals.
I hear ya, I have a lot of personal projects I'm trying to get off the ground too. One I may be able to announce by the end of summer.
I think It's looking great!. On a side note, anyone else feels his heart pump when "To Zanarkand" was playing? I swear that has to be the best videogame music ever.
Mine slows down with a twinge of nostalgia for quality long lost.
The Soundtrack to Final Fantasy X is surprisingly tranquil with tracks like 'Tidus Theme' or 'Besaid'. They're just very nice to listen to. Think I may have to get X's soundtrack soon too.
On a side note, World' what is that Yuna picture from… It almost looks like a promotion for Theatrhythm…

Sigh… I should have known better than to post something positive about Final Fantasy on this site. It amazes me how ONE not bad, not great game and two not for everyone sequels can destroy the legacy of at least 9 all around excellent games spanning more than 25 years in the eyes of some people.
It's just a fan CG.
Calm down darx, you know as well as I do the greatness is never coming back.

Well that's the thing, I still have hope for FFXV, action oriented or not. Anyways, I know that you want XV to be as great as I hope It will be… Sorry If I was too harsh…
eh, we get heated about what we love. Let's just send happy thoughts in the same direction 🙂
Looks nice. Check out out how much improved the geometry on Rikku's shoulder is as the cam passes by her near the beginning of the vid. This is a quality conversion.
Lol, I didn't noticed the improved geometry on her shoulder because I was too busy looking at the unimproved geometry on her blue little wing thingy.
stuff that was low quality to begin with is gonna look worse in HD, DMC HD has a lot of trouble with that in character models.
I have yet to see the DMC HD collection but I remember DMC looked horrible on the PS2. the textures were detailed but really really soft. It looked just as soft as the PS2 port of Resident Evil 4. Does anyone know if they were released on the same engine. Because they both had the same problem. DMC still looks very sharp.
The backgrounds look fantastic though.
The PS2 version of RE4 looks like garbage compared to the GameCube version.
I never got a Gamecube but I almost did for Windwaker. I think everyone agrees it had the definitive RE4.
Oh man, I picked up the PS2 version for $5 out of curiosity, not only were the graphics terrible, the sound and controls where just as bad if not worse. One of the worst ports I've ever played. I quit playing it and went out an bought the Wii version which was the GameCube version with motion controls and extra modes.
Come to think of it I don't know if I've even played FFX on an HD TV yet, or if I did it wasn't with S-video or an upconverter.
Sure looked great on an SD TV though.
Now you've gone and sparked my curiosity. I'm gonna pop it in when I get home. 🙂 Last time I played it was on my old tube TV in SD.
Me too… never before in HD… Should give it a whirl.
