EA Hasn’t Killed Dead Space, But DS4 Isn’t In The Works

It was initially reported that after lower-than-expected sales of Dead Space 3 , EA had halted the franchise.

But in a recent Eurogamer interview with EA Games Label boss Patrick Soderlund, the publisher has confirmed that they haven't entirely ditched the relatively popular IP:

"I wouldn't say it's [Dead Space franchise] cancelled at all. Dead Space remains a brand that is close to Electronic Arts' heart. It's been a great brand for us done by a very passionate team."

However, he did add that there isn't a new Dead Space currently in the works, and that developer Visceral is instead "working on something else very exciting." He said EA's goal is put the best possible titles on the market, and the first step is to have a talented team of developers that can deliver the goods on a consistent basis.

"I am of the utmost opinion that we have to put the best possible games in the hands of our fans. How you get to a great game, the first thing you need is a great development team that have a passion for building what they're building. That's a simple parameter. Everything else follows. Money, time, everything else follows. It's less relevant. That's ultimately how you get success. It's as simple as that."

He says he doesn't know if there will ever be a Dead Space 4 , but they certainly haven't killed the series. This sorta reminds us of what EA said after Mirror's Edge debuted to relative critical success in 2008. It didn't sell quite as well as EA hoped so a sequel wasn't immediately in the works, but they always said they hadn't abandoned the IP. And now, some years later, we learn about the new ME effort for the next generation.

Therefore, maybe Dead Space will indeed return in time as well.

It will be back, but let's hope that the lesson is clear: people want horror from this series, not another shooter.

I'd like to know what Visceral is working on, even if it isn't the next Dante's Inferno.

Please don't go the RE route. Like World says, more horror, less FPS
.

This series need's a little break anyway. Wait till we want one. Then give us want we want.

One of the few horror-esque (these days) games that I enjoy (I'm a total pussycat).

If they'd kept their focus, budgeted responsibly and hadn't tried so hard for "broader appeal" then things would have worked out better. Dead Space, as a property, is a niche title. Always has been, always will be. It has it's fans but it's never going to appeal to everyone and EA was stupid for trying to make it something that it's not. When they bring it back, they need to figure out who the audience is and make the game that those people want.

This sucks! The Evil Within better adequately fill in the void.

good, that means they can get back to work on a sequel for dantes inferno!
it will be back though, its far too popular a franchise to abandon.
hopefully it will go back to the claustrophobic narrow corridors of the ishimura rather than the much wider open areas of the sprawl, or the open planet in 3.
the closed nature of DS1 is what made it so tense and scary, it was so easy to get overwhelmed because you couldent just turn and run away.
kinda hard to be scared of something if you can run away from it.
