Ben-DutkaIt has become common for the NPD monthly results to show at least a 20% year-over-year decline in overall game sales in the US. Kinda depressing.
And now, Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia says this trend won't reverse until GTAV hits store shelves . Bhatia told investors today that March sales for the video game industry will be down 10-15%.
But the analyst believes things will turn around when Grand Theft Auto V launches in September, and the industry will be further spurred by the arrival of the next-generation consoles. This falls very much in line with what other analysts have said on the matter, as most expect GTAV to sell 20-25 million units in its lifetime. As for publisher Take-Two Interactive, they're poised for a good year, as Bioshock Infinite appears to be doing well, and will allow Take-Two to see their March sales rise 70% year-over-year. I think the problem has been oversaturation. To many good games has cause a backlog that people are having to finish.
GTA V will be a monster, but apart from boosting Take Two's stock price, it won't have much of an impact beyond that. It's not as though other publishers will get much of a bounce from it. Yes, new hardware will help but what the industry needs is new IP and new concepts. If they just keep doing the same stuff then the boost won't last long.
So, does anybody think GTA would have the same impact if it came out every year?
Not even close. The lesson to be drawn from GTA V and Bioshock Infinite is that if you take your time and provide something worth buying then people will buy it.

I'm not sure that ONLY GTAV will stop the tailspin, but it will help.
My ps3 died a month ago and I just can't justify buying a new one this soon to the launch of the ps4, so unless GTA5 is for the ps4 I won't be buying it anytime soon…
As others have expressed already, I REALLY hope GTAV will hit the PS4 as well as current gen consoles. IF it was announced as a launch title for the PS4 I would probably hold off and pick it up when I pick up my PS4 on launch day. I already have several games lined up to buy before November, I wouldn't mind pushing one or two back to be purchased post-PS4 launch and on that console.
