Harmonix Shuts Down Servers Due To Apparent Attack

If you were wondering why the RockBand.com and DanceCentral.com servers weren't functioning over the weekend, here's why-

Harmonix has sent out an email to all registered users of the aforementioned sites, explaining that they were forced to disable passwords for all Harmonix site accounts due to a security breach. They did this as a "precautionary measure" and users will have to reset their passwords when things are back up and running (which might be now, by the way).

The developer is currently investigating an apparent attack on their servers, which was detected this past week. Here's part of the message Harmonix delivered to those affected:

"The security of your Harmonix user information is very important to us. We've taken the sites down while we investigate this incident and determine how our systems and the information we maintain may have been compromised. At this time, we have not found that any of our users' information has been published or misused. None of our sites maintain any credit card information, social security numbers, or financial account numbers for any of our users."

This is the kind of thing that just confuses me. I guess my only question has always been the same: Why ? What motivation could you possibly have for doing this, besides being a di**? I mean, unless you were really looking to steal identities. Either way, just…'gag'

It's weird, when it happened to Sony, everyone freaked the **** out! Lately, it has been happening to everyone, including Microsoft. I don't understand why Sony was brutally attacked and others weren't. Looking back, I think Sony did the right thing in every way possible. Not that I thought otherwise.

Can anyone tell me why personal information would be on Harmonix servers in the first place?
Why would their site need credit card accounts or social security numbers in the first place?
I don't understand.

ha I'll reply to myself.
I skipped past the part where the statements reads: None of our sites maintain any credit card information, social security numbers, or financial account numbers for any of our users."
