Series creator Hideo Kojima took to the stage at GDC 2013 to unveil the new installment, and he even showed off a five and a half minute gameplay demo. It also gives us our first full look at the much-vaunted Fox Engine.
The story starts after Snake awakens from a 9-year coma. He wakes up next to the figure of Ishmael, whose face was covered in bandages in The Phantom Pain . The demo shows off MGSV's tutorial level and as you can see, Snake has trouble with even simple coordination after 9 years on his back. But he soon regains his ability and at that point, I'm sure we're off on another memorable MGS adventure. The game is slated to hit the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 but we don't have an estimated release date; here's hoping it's ready for the holidays! The sooner the better with this one, right?
Unfortunately, long-time Snake actor David Hayter will not be reprising his starring role. As he recently Tweeted :
"Well look, at least I had a good run."
A fan wondered if Hayter was even asked to play Snake and his reply was simple- "Nope." That's really too bad, but we have to assume Kojima knows what he's doing, right?

I find it hard to believe that Hayter wasn't involved at all. After such huge success with Snake.
Just like Kojima's misdirection with The Phantom Pain, and Moby Dick, the same COULD be said about David Hayter.
Notice how he hasn't actually said he has nothing to do with the game aside from "At least I had a good run".
Knowing how Kojima is with the MGS franchise, it's hard for me to imagine that he would change it up like that.
From what I have read in other articles, MGS:GZ and MGS5 are two different games. With MGS:GZ acting as a prologue to MGS5. I could be wrong.
I am personally not very interested in MGS5 unfortunately, I was REALLY hoping for a continuation of Solid Snake's story. I wish they would have separate names, one for Snake's story and one for Big Boss.
I wanted to see more Old Snake, only because MGS4 was amazing.
Kojima said in a tweet that its one game and you start off playing ground zeros 9 years earlier, similar to the virtuous mission of mgs3 or the tanker of mgs2. And since kojima is the biggest troll since xbots I'd bet my ps3 hayter is in it, maybe as solid snake.
This is why we love kojima. D1p. For my wallets sake I hope it comes out next year tho.

Maybe David Hayter won't be in MGS V for a common reason some actors aren't chosen to fill movie and TV roles: Money. Maybe Hayter priced himself too high. Maybe another voice actor can do ol' Solid Snake w/o us noticing?
Now Presenting Frank Caliendo as the new voice actor for Solid Snake, lol. I heard him do Morgan Freeman on the local morning talk show. He can impersonate anyone!

David Hayer obviously knew about MGS5, he tweeted that comment awhile ago asking what people would think if he wasn't involved, so clearly he knew about the new MGS game.
BUT he has now said that he wasn't asked to be involved, so if Kojima didn't ask him, then how did he know about the game? Anyone else think it's strange?
Hmm… I wonder if they pull the old MGS switch like they did in MGS2 and have you take over a young Solid Snake Infiltrating Big Boss's Outer Heaven in Africa
Well this is some of the best CGI Ive ever seen.
Kojima hasn't used CGI even once in the Metal Gear series. There's no reason to believe he would suddenly start now. They've been working on the Fox engine for years. This is a display of hard work.
What does CGI stand for?
CGI stands for computer generated imagery and is most commonly used to describe 3D computer generated special effects in motion pictures. An example of the term being used would be the CGI in the Transformers movie was spectacular. In videogames CGI is footage that is prerendered on powerful computers and is streamed from the game disc or hard drive just like a movie would be for the most part. CGI footage in videogames isn't running in real time using the consoles assets so you can't play it. I guess think of CGI footage as a non interactive movie. You can view it inside a game but can't play it.
Basically what I think bigrailer is saying is he doubts the footage was running in real time on this gen's hardware because it looks too good. He thinks it might be prerendered footage(CGI) like what we used to see in a lot of Square's cutscenes on the PS1 and PS2. On the PS1 the prerendered footage(or CGI)was light years ahead of the actual in game graphics.
On the PS2 the actual in game graphics were a lot closer to the CGI footage seen in the cutscenes on a game like Final Fantasy 10 for example. It was still easy to spot a CGI scence because of the character's hair looked a lot better in the CGI footage versus the real time in game graphics. In Final Fantasy 13 on the PS3 it was really tough tell the difference between CGI footage and the actual in game graphics running in real time.
Profplaystation is correct when he says Hideo has never really used CGI before. That's true for the most part. All of MGS's cutscenes were running in real time off the hardware going all the way back to PS1 days.
If this is actual in game footage from the FOX engine running on this gen's hardware then damn the FOX engine is freaking fantastic!! If anybody knows if this mgs5 footage is running on the ps3 in real time please let us know.

I could've sworn that MGSV was being made for the launch lineup of PS4 but it seems it'll be for PS3 AND Xbox 360… what a shame, would have been a system seller for me…
David Hayter's voice was basically SNAKE and it should've been used for this one also but I trust in Kojima…
Fox looks amazing, game looks amazing, so like is this 9-year coma Snake the big boss or the solid/old snake? I can't keep em straight.
Well the interesting thing is that this Coma-Snake lost his left arm, but Big Boss never lost an arm. Is it just in his head?
I remember them saying Solid, Liquid, and Solidus were cloned from Big Boss while he was in a coma, so I imagine this is Big Boss here. Don't know how to explain the missing arm though.
Yeah, Zero used his DNA to clone him while he was in a coma. I guess this could be that coma.

"In 1972, while Big Boss fell into a coma from being gravely wounded from a battle, Zero brought his unconscious body to a lab where his genes were extracted to make genetically enhanced soldiers. Solid Snake, Liquid Snake, and Solidus Snake were produced in this program, and were known as the Sons of Big Boss."
It could definitely be possible that this game details that event. I would definitely say his was gravely wounded, the trailer showed him covered in blood.
Not sure about the arm either, the title The Phantom Pain must be a play on it. Phantom Pain is something people can experience after losing a limb, where their body still feels sensations of pain in place of where that limb used to be.

Actually, it can't be. It says that the coma he fell into was in 1972, and the Peace Walker incident happened in 1974.
Either the dates are incorrect, this isn't Big Boss, or it is a different coma that we never knew about.
Hideo Kojima has actually changed the timeline a bit. You should check out the app that is on the ps3. I am pretty sure that has it up to date when it comes to the mgs lore.
yes u r correct I think. It says that Big Boss is wounded in Vietnam and falls into a coma. I think it was Big Boss DNA that was extracted from him and EVA playing as the surrogate mother. Zero had to come up with the plan/project, whatever the name of the project it was called. Look it up I forgot a lot of this stuff. You can also go on PSN and download the Metal Gear Solid Database, helpful timeline.

It's Big Boss, unless Kojima is screwing with us even more. That's this diehard MGS fan's analysis.
This game looks amazing, and I'm already really anxious to play it. I hope that bit about David Hayter not being involved is just some misdirection, as I can't picture anyone but him being Snake. Also, I'm noticing a bit of a theme here. A few months ago, "The Phantom Pain" was said to be developed by Moby Dick Game Studios (though it was pretty obvious it was a Metal Gear game.) Snake wakes up next to a character named Ishmael, and there's that mysterious bit about the giant flaming whale eating a helicopter in the trailer. I'm really curious how all of that is going to tie together.

I've been a MG fan since the original. Just a thought here, but does anyone else think Kojima has lost his damn mind over the years? Maybe it's just slipped a little bit more towards the 'artistic' side? I remember the good old days of sneaking through a huge compound, killing a buch of soldiers, and battling diverse bosses. That seems to have slowly evolved into a lot of cryptic spiritual, political, & 'I don't even have the faintest hit at what the F this guy is trying to convey here' kinds of messages. Just seems a tad convoluted now. Not saying the gameplay has gotten worse. Just, man, lay off the sauce Kojima. If I wanna see flaming whales I can go to a country western gay bar.
Each and every MGS game has had a main theme to it.
MGS1 – Genetics (The idea of nature vs. nurture.)
MGS2 – Memes (The theory that ideas, beliefs and thoughts can be isolated and controlled.)
MGS3 – Scene (The climate in which events occur and the impact it has upon them.)
MGS4 – Sense (An individuals understanding of the world.)
I suspect that Pain could be the theme behind the next game.
I realize this. Like I said, I'm a huge fan and have played every game except for Rising which I'm waiting for a price drop on. I just think that the gameplay has taken more and more of a backseat to the cinematics over the evolution of the series. Peace Walker made me happy as it had a ton of gameplay, but I wish it was one continuous game instead of 3 minute missions. Hopefully this game will have more interactive cutscenes than the previous ones. MGS4 especially. If I could've played more and watched less, I would've been a lot more satisfied with the game. Not to say that it and the rest of them aren't slathered in awesome sauce, mind you.
I kind of agree with fatel. More convoluted as the series has progressed. I'd argue MGS2 was more convoluted than MGS3 but as a whole fatel's statement holds up. MGS2 is easily my least favorite. The bait-and-switch from playing legendary bad a$$ SNAKE to sissy boy Raiden. The setting and bosses weren't that great at all. A fat man on roller skates?? Come on!! Don't forget about Rose on the Codec randomly chiming in about when you first met. OMG, so, so dissaponted in that game.
MGS3 was a HUGE improvement. The jungle setting was spectacular, and the campign was much more focused. I loved the boss fight with The End. They were all great actually.
MGS4 would have greatly benefited from a few more chapters and an editor that had the balls to scream "CUT!!!". Some of those cutscenes lasted an eternity. They just went on and on. I try to cut it some slack because Hideo was trying to tie up all the loose ends but there was a lot of content in those cutscenes that didn't really add to the story…it was just there. You can easily beat MGS4 in 4-5 hours if you skip the cutscenes. So like fatel I wish there was more actual gameplay in MGS4.
MGS1 is still my favorite. I saw the trailer for it on one of the demo discs that came with my PS1 and instantly fell in love with it. Bought it day one. I remember being blown away by the voice acting. The chatter on the codec was awesome and really drew me in. That game casted a huge shadow over everything else I played that year. Other games just didn't measure up.
Speaking of voice acting…no Hayter? WTF??? To the others who are saying this is just a misdirection by Hideo I would point out Hayter's tweet awhile back that indicated he wasn't in MGS5. Reminds of the state of denial Sony fans were in when MGS Revengeance and MGS HD went multiplat. I was told Hideo didn't like MS and he would find a way to keep MGS Sony exclusive. I said the writing was on the wall that MGS5 would be on the 360 because of the multiplat FOX engine. Well, the writing is on the wall here too. it's probably just a bussiness decision on Konami's part much like going multiplat. Hayter wanted too much money or something.
If this is just some elaborate deception by Hideo then great, but what would they have to gain by doing that? What's the upside to stating Hayter is history and then sneaking him in there? If anything changing voice actors on such an iconic character and announcing it before the game is released will only generate negative feedback and it looks like it is.
I don't think it's a deal breaker for many but it might be for a few. I hope this just wasn't because of financial reasons but that's the way it looks because the Japanese voice actor for Snake is unchanged in MGS5.

But in all seriousness, I don't think it's fair to lose faith in the series over Metal Gear Rising, while I can't just let it off as a spin off being set after MGS4 – it's Platinum Games influence changed it – for the worse in my opinion but I don't think it's fair to use this game against the series.
But if you look over the past of MGS there have been many surreal moments. In MGS3 when you kill the Fury, his spirit comes back in flames and chases you out of the building. When I originally played it I was annoyed by little features like that, but I now see it as it is a story set in the past the surreal imagery enhances this image of a legend that is Big Boss.
The surreal imagery of Phantom Pain is a lot to take in when we don't necessarily understand the context yet. I am willing to wait and see, before I make up my mind.
Woah woah woah. Platinum Games did an amazing job. It's not really fair to say that they changed it themselves, the game is the perfect title for Raiden, after seeing the kind of badass ninja he had become in MGS4, how could he EVER go back to being plain old stealth-Raiden again.
Don't forget that KojiPro was still directly involved with the game, PG and KojiPro worked together, with KojiPro acting as advisors/consultants on the project.
There has been many interviews with KojiPro staff talking about the discussions that took place about it, Kojima himself was pleased with the way they handled it, so much so that he wants them to handle the sequel too.
At the end of the day, if he wasn't happy with it, it wouldn't have gone ahead.
Given the amount of times Kojima has said "this is my last Metal Gear game", it's not surprising some things have gone questionable ways.
I'm not sure how you're all able to keep up with the storyline and characters.
MGS4 was my first game lol. It was confusing as heck for me, but I went online (Metal Gear Wiki) and it helped a lot. It's complicated, but easy to follow imo.

To be honest I have no idea whats what after MGS on the original Playstation. It kind of made sense then. Now…?
I use to frequent a dry-humored fan-site dedicated to the series, that detailed all the systems each title, and spin-off title was released on. Along with the years and it's own formulated timeline (before the official one came out).
Since it was before MGS3 came out, I soaked up all that information and anything after just made it easier to remember.
Ugh, the tease. Is this running real time in current gen consoles, or just CG? From past experience, Kojima would use in-game though, but this just seems too out there.

You guys played MGS 4 right? Think of it like this…at the first roll of ending credits…just when we thought it was the ending: BAM a voice actor known as Richard Doyle for BIG BOSS comes up – and we're LIKE WTF?! and he shows up.
I'm willing to bet that Solid Snake shows up in MGS V – near the end. I mean…how funky would it be with 2 character: big boss and solid snake voiced by the same person?
And if in the end David Hayter isn't in this…Kojima lost his direction with MGS. – And…that my friends is a ridiculous statement to make…which is why it's not possible.

My faith in Kojima will be slightly affected if he has chosen to remove David Hayter completely from now on.
I've suspected for some time that Kojima is working toward completing a cycle back toward the beginning of the original Metal Gear for NES/MSX. The MGS 5 timeline (what it appears to be, anyway) is going to take place just a few years before the timeline of that original Metal Gear. I wouldn't be surprised if Kojima ultimately remakes Metal Gear 1 and 2 as well. Would be quite the commentary on the cyclical, if not flat out redudant, nature of video games and pop culture as a whole. GAWD I love Metal Gear 🙂
Oooh, and ShadowPal, btw, that's a GREAT theory, that Solid Snake shows up toward the end of the game. David Hayter would totally be down for playing along with Kojima's ruse, so I'm putting that in the "definitely maybe" pile.
but isn't the Big Boss from MG1 and MG2 like kind of old? With grey hair and stuff?
Big Boss still looked 'relatively' young in the MGS5 trailer.

I completely agree with shadowpal2. I think there is something to what he is saying and would make total sense. A minor part for Solid Snake has probably not been recorded. That's the only reason that Hayer wouldn't be doing Big Boss. It would be inconsistent. Just like if Hayter and Doyle talked to each other during MGS4's brilliant final scene. It would have been awkward. Same rules apply here.
But in terms of this trailer: The MGS fan in me is pumped. Hideo is taking it in a very bold direction. Looks like it's going to have some traditional MGS moments (from what I've seen from the GZ part), but a lot of new ones as well. And the fact this is running on PS3 only proves that we don't need a new console yet. The technical marvel this game is already is astounding and looks just as good, if not better than inFamous: Second Son and Killzone: Shadowfall, both of which are PS4 titles.

Oh a New Metal Gear Solid just never fails to excite. As many have already stated the graphics looks astonishing and even better than anything we saw at the PS4 show. I was waiting until the end of the trailer just to see if it hadn't been exchanged to the PS4 I honestly thought it would because it looks that good.
But regarding the game itself, I think we can assume Ground Zeroes is just the prequel mission like the tanker or virtuous openings of previous games. So I expect that in the package with MGS5. When was GZ meant to be set? was it 1974? So it'll be set in the 80's – all for that. I am presuming the man on the horse is Miller, 9 years after the operating table. Also, if that is the Thee Psycho Mantis, I am really interested to see that character explored more. There is a lot of potential here and I hope it isn't wasted. My problem with Peace Walker is that the story felt like one massive diversion, it just told it's own story rather than expanding the timeline as a whole. To be honest since MGS3, I don't feel they have really expanded Big Boss as a character since. So I am hoping MGS5 will really tackle some big matters within his life. Plenty to look forward to I think and like the majority of MGS fans day 1 purchase guaranteed.
Well Peace Walker happened in 1974, and GZ is meant to take place sometime soon after that, so either '74 or '75.
EDIT: oh and Kojima has explained that MGS:GZ and MGS5 are seperate games, with MGS:GZ acting as a prequel to MGS5.

Can't say I didn't wet myself when I saw all of this news yesterday.
Kojima really doesn't say die. You would think that the franchise quality would get drowned out by the other competition over the years, but time and time again we get a limit pushing game.
It's nice to know that you can watch and read all the news you want about this game and it will never be spoiled. The actually game that you buy is always full of surprises that you could have never guessed.
The lack of David Hayter is an interesting one. Gonna miss that voice over.
