We figured this would show up at some point. Who doesn't want a new Saints Row?
Today, publisher Deep Silver has announced the next "ball-busting chapter" in the acclaimed franchise: Saints Row IV is slated to launch on current-gen consoles and PC on August 20, 2013, and three days later in other parts of the world. That's earlier than anticipated, I think.
Developer Volition continues where Saints Row: The Third left off, as the Third Street Saints have elevated their status to "leaders of the free world." Yep, the gang's leader has somehow been elected to the Presidency of the United States and really, that's just the beginning. An alien invasion messes with the hedonistic harmony of the earth, and the aliens actually transport the Saints to a "bizarro-Steelport simulation." There, we can have superpowers! I was wondering why the announcement trailer reminded me of inFamous …
So we'll get alien weaponry and technology along with our otherworldly skills, and the game will also boast enhanced customization. Players will be able to "leap over buildings, outrun the fastest sports cars, or send enemies flying with telekinesis in the greatest, most insane installment of Saints Row yet." Yeah, well, we'll see.

Is it too much to hope that they'll throttle back on the over-the-top silliness of Saint's Row the Third and take us closer to a Saint's Row 2 tone?

I'm afraid that's too much to hope for. This game (SR4) is an expanded version of what was originally meant as a DLC for SR3. So I view this as "Saints Row 3.5".
But let's hope they do as you suggest in SR5!
Uh no dude, you want that OTHER sandbox games, you know the boring one.
World, I hear ya, but don't you think they went a bit too far in SR3? I hate to admit it cause I totally *love* the franchise, but the third became too much for me.
Hmm, I think I sense a pattern here?
Crysis 2 the best Crysis.
Mass Effect 2 the best Mass Effect.
Saints Row 2 the best Saints Row.
Beam is saints row 3 co-op for the campaign?
Beam is saints row 3 co-op for the campaign?
Oh boy if it is, Big. Full campaign coop, without any of you missing out on anything. Seamless integration, drop-in/drop-out, you carry the objects you get with you across single player and coop gaming, all story progress, collectibles, everything stored in your savegame regardless of host.
You both see your own character as main character in your versions of the cut-scenes so you both see the story from your perspective, there's nothing you get in single player you don't get in coop.
Saints Row is the KING of sandbox coop gaming this generation. Best there is. The set the bar for others to follow. So if you got a buddy to play with, you can't find a more hillarious coop sandbox experience than Saints Row.
I still think the second is the best, though.

You're talking to someone who enjoyed the Crank movies so no I don't think it's possible for them to go too far for me 🙂
Beam-
Sounds good im sold.
World-
I like the crank movies also!
I wish the Stath would do a 3rd movie.
WTF! Can't they just give this game a super hero themed new IP name? Strange idea
As already stated, this was originally meant to be DLC called "Enter the Dominatrix" IIRC before THQ decided to make it a full fledged game.
I understand, but it doesn't look like SR anymore.
The superhero stuff was only supposed to be one part of the game. Dunno if that's still the case.
I've always looked at the Saints Row series as GTA:San Andreas on crack. GTAIV could've been almost as ridiculous if Rockstar didn't decide to pull back and embrace realism.
F*ck yeah! This has the insane transition from Evil Dead to Army of Darkness written all over it. Love it.
I'll wait a month after this release to get GTA this looks to damn goofy !
That looks crazy as hell, LOL!
