The Last Of Us Delayed Because Naughty Dog Won’t Compromise

We're perfectly willing to wait another five weeks. We say that's fine; give Naughty Dog all the time they need.

Initially, the developer's hotly anticipated new project, The Last Of Us , was slated to launch on May 7. But Sony has just revealed that they're pushing back the release date; the game is now set for June 14. That's a worldwide launch date, by the way.

The issue is simply that Naughty Dog is comprised of perfectionists, and they're only interested in delivering the very best adventure possible. They're seeking to raise the bar yet again and for that to happen, they need another month or so. Naughty Dog issued the following statement to explain the delay:

"As a team we pride ourselves on setting a very high quality bar for every aspect of our games–gameplay, story, art, design, technology and more. We want to make sure The Last of Us raises that bar even further – for ourselves, and most importantly, our fans.

As we entered the final phase of development for The Last of Us, we came to realise just how massive Joel and Ellie's journey is. But instead of cutting corners or compromising our vision, we came to the tough decision that the game deserved a few extra weeks to ensure every detail of The Last of Us was up to Naughty Dog's internal high standards."

We respect that and we've got no problem with the delay. We'd be far more disappointed in a product that doesn't quite live up to expectations and as Naughty Dog is fully aware, those expectations are through the roof.

It kind of sucks to have it delayed, but then again I know the game will improve leaps and bounds in just the extra month that Naughty Dog gets. I already have this game paid in full at GameStop, can't wait to play it.

A very acceptable reason for delaying the game, and it's a rather short delay at that. I appreciate Naughty Dog for havign so much respect for their work and their fans. Other studios have so much to learn from them (I'm particularly looking at you, S-E!).

Usually polish delays occur in weeks. Why is Rockstar taking MONTHS?

Rockstars development times are typically slower than most developers. Why? I dont know.

because they always bite off more than they can chew!
the ambition for GTAV, is 100 times larger than the ambition and scope for every other game put together!
exactly why im worried, look what happened to GT5…….

There are no fixed rules in game development, that's why. Polish may seem straightforward but it can be incredibly difficult and time consuming.

Considering you complain about 99% of the games released for being rushed or a rehash or just plain boring, you should be happy that Sony is giving ND the extra time to polish this game up no?

Oh no, don't delay it further now… Cause then it *will* drown in the roaring noise of the new generation takeover.

Nah, provided they keep it in June, it should be fine. I'd be more worried if it was delayed until the holiday season.

Yes if they keep it in june, but if they delay it *further*, it will drown. The new-gen circus will be at the peak come august/sept.

I love when they delay games that already show a lot of promise. I would rather a game come out later and be all that it set out to be then be rushed out into the market because someone needs to keep their quarterly up.

Good move Sony. One month isn't a big deal either, it will release just in time for all the kids getting out of school to buy and play for their first weeks of summer 😀

This is why i love ND they are perfectionists and when you get to play their games you see why… I can wait just gives me time to play GOW and pay this game off.

amazing to see one of the few game companies that are willing to do this instead of releasing it early and having to patch the games on launch day. A few more weeks to get a better game experience on day 1 is more than worth it to me, who has already pre-orderd this game many months ago.
