Source: Sega Questioned Gearbox’s Commitment To Aliens

Aliens: Colonial Marines is a mess. The fact that it was in development for six years makes it even more absurd.

And as it turns out, there was some dissension in the ranks; specifically, between publisher and developer. According to what one industry source told GameSpot , Sega was concerned that Gearbox was focusing too heavily on their vaunted Borderlands series.

And as a result, that focus meant time taken away from the Aliens game, which was delayed multiple times. The anonymous source stated as follows:

"Sega was very concerned that the bulk of Gearbox's resources/manpower was being spent on Borderlands and that they weren't investing the effort in Colonial Marines that they should have been. …hence it being repeatedly delayed.

Obviously, judging from the end result, that issue was never resolved."

Colonial Marines has been widely panned by critics; it scored a 4.5 at GameSpot, earned a 3 at Eurogamer, a 5 at IGN, and a 3.7 here. On the flip side, last year's Borderlands 2 was one of the best games of the generation. But don't forget that Gearbox evidently didn't create the majority of the campaign; as development was an apparent "train-wreck," it was handed off to TimeGate Studios .

It certainly isn't a warm, fuzzy story. Just disappointing as hell.

But as World commented in an earlier article; I really don't understand how Gearbox let stuff like this tarnish their good name and reputation.
First Duke, now this…

They seem to be willing to let their name be used (or the publisher wants to put it on the box because of the good Gearbox products like Borderlands) even though they only did a minimal amount of work on it. You can tell just by playing Duke that all Gearbox did was put other people's work into a single package, maybe slap some varnish on it and then put it out.

Maybe Sega didn't pay GearBox enough? And the end product is their way of telling Sega "you get what you paid for"?

Sega has been having money issues for some time. Cutting back on game development.

Maybe the IP should go to another company that is not in the red, like Sega currently is.

I'm just wondering why Gearbox didn't do all the work.
Would have been awesome if they did.

For a reduced price, this game is not bad at all, easily being a 7 on a 10 point scale. I dont get how peeps say this is one of the worst games ever, because it isnt.

End of Line.

Agreed here as well, after the first hour and a half at least, and every non-critic I know who's actually played if 5-6 people) has enjoyed it so far. Something odd going on here.

Speaking of this game, check out this extremely interesting video. You want to see this analysis between a demo a year ago and the final product:

Wow, thanks for pointing that out.

I was on youtube last night looking at gameplay videos for this game, I found that original gameplay demo from last year and thought "Wow, this actually looks really cool, why is everyone saying it sucks?" but now I realise that I was actually watching the game before it got turned into a steaming pile of trash.

Yeah I know, what the heck happened??? How did it happen?

Also this goes to show how we can not even trust "gameplay videos" before a release.

easy to point fingers, when the blame could easly be pointed at sega.
where were they (sega) during the production of the game?

took six years? maby a six year delay and a 1 year rush job to get it released.

its sad that a well known dev gets the blame considering there was
more than one studio involved.

gearbox got used

Gearbox did not get used. Is their name on the box? Should have checked what they were getting into before doing so.

One of the reasons i preordered. Was because i thought gearbox was doing the whole game. Not farming out the single player part.

Damn, first bad game of 2013

so why dident they step in and DO something about it!?
i gotta call BS on this, this is not the first time SEGA has put out a stinker!
look at alpha protocol, that game had potential as high as space is infinite!
and according to obsidian it was SEGAs constant changes on what they wanted that turned it into a unfinished mess.
so was it the developers fault, or was it segas?
both, but i find it really hard to believe sega were concerned about it.
