Everyone has New Year's resolutions, right? Well, you should also have some related to video games…we can all better ourselves!
So what do you resolve to do in 2013? Do you resolve not to research one of your most anticipated titles just because you'd like to be surprised for once? With the explosion of the information age, we often see a lot of hotly anticipated games long before they ever arrive and for many, that kinda kills the excitement.
Or maybe you resolve to try a new genre, maybe one you've always wanted to try, or one that has always intimidated you for one reason or another. Perhaps you've heard about certain games in those categories winning all sorts of awards, or maybe you have a lot of friends who have enjoyed such experiences, and now you want to check it out for yourself. Then again, maybe you've been playing one genre – or even one game – too much, and you resolve to jump back into the mix and get caught up. Some of you addicted to Minecraft or World of Warcraft might want to make such a resolution, for example.
Then again, maybe you resolve to actually do something in the gaming industry. Perhaps you're young and ambitious and love video games, but you've been hesitant to take that next step, to actually go to school for gaming, or to apply for that entry-level position. Now's the time, yes?
I resolve to buy only one game at a time and play it start to finish before buying another. My backlog is astounding.
Happy New Year to all!!
Oh man that is a really good resolution. I hereby make that resolution for me too. There's only money to be saved that way, and a huge backlog stresses me out.
Good luck man, I know it isn't possible for me.
I resolve to buy a Vita. Other than that… nothing really springs to mind. Happy New Year!
The Vita is doing terribly. I wouldn't go down that road
I haven't purchased a Vita yet. But I have played my buddy's whenever I visit. It's an amazing piece of hardware.
Emily,
Bah, it has games I want and I'll need a portable system. My PSP, I fear, will have depleted its backlog well before mid-year.
Don't ignore the vita because other have. Its a great game system and does have a lot of good games. On top of that Its (in my opinion) an amazing way to play those psp games I missed out on and some awesome ps1 classics.
I hope sony goes all out on it at E3
The Vita is brilliant in my opinion. Good luck with your resolution.
I love Zero Escape: Virtues Last Reward at the moment. Perfect game for a handheld. Persona 4 Golden looks brilliant (not out in Australia yet). Gravity Rush and Uncharted are both excellent. Lumines is like crack cocaine… Fifa, Golf, Virtual Tennis are all brilliant for handheld versions.
All the PSN downloadable games, PS1 and PSP games. I can't see where this negativity is coming from…
You will love it!
I meant that if the sales performance continues doing this badly, developers won't support it. It's what happened to the original Xbox and the Dreamcast.
And you are the reason it is doing terribly. If people buy it they will support it. Sorry to say but that is stupid reasoning. Sony will support it at least. The vita has been a great piece of technology, don't believe those naysayers lawless. Good luck on your purchase :).
Xbox was second place that gen, though. And devs didn't support the dreamcast, because it was insecure. Pirating to the extreme! Lol
But vita isn't the only slow selling piece of hardware in it's first year or two. Other systems that sucked in year one? Ps1, ps2, ps3, psp…
ive got 2.
first to stop being so obsessive having to unlock everything and search every nook and cranny!
spent so much time in FC3 ive searched every cave by now at least 100 times!
2 is to spend less time gaming and more time doing my work.
really starting to fall behind with my engine work, but that really wasent my fault a certain unreliable manufacture with overpriced products is.
amazing how companies can charge people 4,5,6,7,8,9,10+ thousand dollars for a laptop and it be so unreliable!
ended up failing 2 of my major courses because i lost my work and couldent finish it in time.
Backups? I feel bad for you guy, and you certainly aren't alone, but I just don't understand why people don't backup important files!
Got to cut down on my day one purchases.
To get through my old RPGS! I still have Rouge Galaxy, Dark Cloud 1 & 2, Dragon Quest VIII, Valkryie Profile 1 & 2, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Xenogears & recently Xenoblade Chronicles – which I cannot wait to play after I have finished my replay of Final Fantasy X 🙂 & With Ni No Kuni being a day one purchase for me, I will no doubt be entranced by that to start off with – can't wait.
Rouge Galaxy, love that game. Wish they would hurry up with Galaxy 2.
I was going to say plat Dark Souls but I just did that a few hours ago…
Hmmmm, I guess mine is to plat Demon's Souls now
Happy new year 2013 PsXtreme!
Happy New Years to you too bud
To beat more of the games I play, I usually pick up the games I buy and play it a few times and don't comeback to them till I have nothing else to do. The games keep adding up. Also when playing multiplayer games to communicate more, I have a mic I rarely use.
1. To tackle my backlog of games in earnest
2. To ween myself off CoD, even when I have a spare 30 minutes to play, to play something alternative.
3. To avoid buying the next gen console from Sony until I've completed my PS3 library
4. To make full use of my PS + subscription
5. To play even more co-op games with my kids
Oh and add to that:
To stop supporting game developers who keep producing more of the "same old"and support newer and fresher ideas, such as those found in original experiences like Journey.
I gues number one would be to get through my game backlog. Second would be to stop adding to my backlog and only buy games when I need a new one to play.
And…of course, PLAY MORE!!
Happy new year!!!
By the way Ben, I enjoyed the pic for this article 😉
To make more time for games, and to make more time for my single player games, and stop playing so much online.
To get The Last of Us and pretend it's Resident Evil 7!!!
I actually got a New Years resolution: To get started on creating my own game.
I got this idea that's been brewing in my head for a while. It's a geeky idea, quite niche setting, but it would be incredibly interesting to create and I will learn a lot along the way.
I got the tools I need installed on my PC, there really are very few excuses left to not get started on this project now.
what kinda game?
You're gonna laugh, but… An open world rpg. Quite ambitious for a first game right? 😉
Set in the antarctica, a science expedition where many of the real threats of such an endeavour is implemented. The camps, the feeling of loneliness, remains of other expeditions, shortage of resources, the vast, ice cold plains to discover, the snow storms, the wildlife… And the science experiments that could be done. Cause I want science to be central here.
I am inspired by the science team who right now are drilling through kilometres of ice on one of the poles, to study the lifeforms in waters that's been 100% isolated from the rest of the world for thousands – maybe millions of years. Just imagine what *could* be found… And how that could work in a game.

I say go for it. My first writing project is a novel rather than a poem or short story and I've been working on it for four years.
Awesome, are you going for super realistic or fantastical? I used to kick around an idea about discovering the rumored Nazi base in the antarctic. Maybe making it something like Rapture beneath the ice. I have a list of facts that make it plausible enough for a script, and how they are technologically tied to a UFO crash in Kecksburg here in the US in the 1970s.
My current writing project is pop fiction based around Final Fantasy VII in a way no one has attempted before.
That's an awesome concept Beam. Go big or go home.
Thanks guys – inspiring with such feedback!
@World, your idea of that Nazi base could work extremely well as one of the main dungeons in the game! We could find hints to the whereabouts scattered around on the surface, with the story of the base being told Bioshock style inside the dungeon!
As for realism I am going for as realistic as possible while still being fun in a game, to put it that way. If you draw aggro from a polar bear you don't stand much of a chance unless you got high skills and a high powered rifle at hand and clear sight, to put it that way.
I have always been fascinated by storms, cold and extreme weather in general, so a virtual world that could give me just a slice of how it must be to be part of such a scientific excursion would be fantastic.
I do want the most fantastic discoveries to be found as "high level content", when you are able to drill yourself down to what I am thinking to be huge pockets of air (dungeons) deep down in the polar ice, each represent an isolated environment who has evolved in independent parallel to our world, with a different outcome. And *those* locations holds plenty of room for unrealism and fantasy. Could make a great contrast.

New Year Resolution: To finish one game before moving on to another.
Seem to have several games that I have not given my full attention to. Have more games than time to play them.
Off topic: Last year I finally ticked off one of my resolutions. I wrote a book and have posted it on Amazon as an ebook (The Cwmgoody Murder). Its a true crime historical story of this 17 year old farm worker in 1848 who killed his colleague and was on the run for months before being captured, tried and executed. I came across the story when researching my family tree as the murderer pretended to be my great great grandfather on one occasion. It is a fascinating story and worth a read for anyone with an interest in true crime or British history.
Mine is to play more games!
I resolve not to touch anything with the words "Final" "Fantasy" and "Lightning" ever again.
Also to finish Star Ocean TLH someday.
I would like to visit Gizamaluke's Grotto.
To actually finish my PC games.
To buy AAA titles only when a game of the year edition comes out. Try out RTS games in my pc
Beat games that I haven't beat in my collection and make more PSN friends to play online games.
