A Canceled Game We Wanted To See: Silent Hill: The Box

Developer Silicon Knights hasn't been doing well lately, recently suffering a big ol' mass exodus . In the process, some unkind words were also said about boss Denis Dyack.

But we wish one of their canceled projects had actually made it to store shelves. According to an informative post in the NeoGAF forums , one of the titles that never got finished was a game called "The Box," which was essentially a Silent Hill iteration of some sort. SK pitched it to Sega and it was meant to be an "open-world survival horror" title for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Sega eventually dropped the idea and although THQ later revived it as "The Ritualyst," the project just never got off the ground. Details as to why are scarce.

It was canceled back in 2009, which is unfortunate. We could've used a really interesting take on the narrowing survival/horror genre. …that being said, if it had turned out to be as craptastic as X-Men: Destiny , maybe not seeing the end result is a blessing in disguise.

It sucks when your favorites get passed off to second or third rate developers. Silent Hill needs careful love and attention from a talented and emotionally disturbed team. That's why Book of Memories looks so bad.

Good point, but as much as It would help create a great game, I would not wish many people to be emotionally disturbed. 😛

But emotionally disturbed people are so very interesting 😉

Can't argue with that! Sometimes I just wish people would never get hurt at all.

Wait… I'm so off topic here.

Most of us can channel out disturbedness into art 🙂

The survival horror genre needed this. It's really too bad it got cancelled. It sounded like an original idea in a genre now filled with cliches. BLAH!

It was a LOOONG time since SK released anything that was regarded as "good" by most. Unfortunately, there's too little information here to really be able to tell what it would have been like, but the bird renders are kinda cool 😀

open world survival horror?
whats the point of that, its not horror if you have infinite space to run away from!
oh nooooo a monsters after me, eh its ok i can just run away.
exactly what ruined dead space 2, the levels were FAR too open!
in fact as soon as we stepped back onto the ship from the original game a massive smile went over my face, and it was like i was back playing the original!
you cant have a open world horror game, whole point of horror is to feel trapped, overwhelmed, under equipped.
you cant feel that if you can just run away.
hows something a threat to your safety when you can just run away from it?

''oh nooooo a monsters after me, eh its ok i can just run away.''

That can be fixed if the character has awful cardio like Alan Wake.

Having a combination of open world segments and also inside areas is essential to the design process then. In Silent Hill 1 and 2 there are open areas when you are walking around the city that you can be attacked in, and while yes, you can run away, there are a lot of monsters so there aren't any particularly safe areas.

It's not like just because it's open world there won't be any inside areas as well.
