Do PS3 Owners Still Want FFXIV?

Here's how I understand it:

Final Fantasy XIV debuted on the PC and the game was a train wreck. It resulted in very low review scores and general unrest from Final Fantasy nation and the legions of MMO fans out there. Square Enix even apologized and set out to fix the myriad of crushing bugs, glitches, and other major issues.

So apparently, they've done that. Or maybe they're still working on it, I don't know (I imagine it's a work in progress). But is this game still coming to the PlayStation 3 or not? I mean, at this point, does anyone even care? Don't just about all those who wanted to play it already have it on PC? And even if they're waiting for the developers to iron out the final kinks, won't they still get it on PC even if the title is released for the PS3? We're getting toward the end of a console cycle here, and a lot of console players will be looking forward to the new generation. To many, FFXIV might be considered a step back.

To be perfectly honest, I've always hated MMOs so I may be very much out of the loop. I'm just wondering what the fans think. I just can't imagine MMO followers waiting for it to launch on the PS3; I can't conceive of anyone doing that. The vast majority of MMO fans are primarily PC players anyway, yes? I dunno…I just think Square Enix would be better suited focusing their efforts on FFXV or something.

hell yea! ps3 is lacking on a definitive RPG. I would prefer a first party western RPG with the budget of Uncharted and God of War, but this will do for now.

Well, I don't have a decent rig to handle games on a decent level. This is the first final fantasy title that I'm really interested on. But I highly doubt It'll be successful on the ps3 on the western markets if It's subscription based, I hope It'll be a pay to play game.
There's no doubt It'll sell very well in Japan, I believe people don't really play games on PC around there.

No. Why get a game with a shady history by a broken company on a system that most of us won't be using a little over a year from now? (I don't expect any backwards compatibility).

umm did you get your PS3 at launch? if not what makes you think youll get a PS4 on day one? plenty of ppl will still be using PS3s long after PS4 is out.. as for shady history…. ok and how many crappy games can you name where the devs:

a) admit its crap

b) lets the whole game remain free for a year because they dont think its worth paying for.

c) tear the entire old game down and rebuilt it from the ground up?

THATS why i would get a game with a shady history.. any other crappy game the devs would just make you continue paying anyway and pretty much say "if you dont like it then stop playing" and or not even try to patch it..

also FFXIV ARR isnt even patching a broken game its a complete rebuilt/overhaul, so youre getting a completely different game with teh same title… not an old game thats gotten all its flaws patched or a few band-aids tossed on a busted pipe.

the fact that the devs realize and admit they screwed up (the entire staff from the first version was fired and replaced with completely new people) AND will go through this much trouble to try to appease its fan/redeem themselves is very much worth a look if you ask me.

All of that is entirely irrelevant. It's an MMO. Developers have the OPTION to basically fix everything. No other game – unless it's entirely online – can be altered from the ground up by the devs after it's released. It's also based on a monthly subscription so it's a service and hence, if that service sucks hardcore, they had DAMN WELL BETTER let it be free.

I'm not into entitlement. I think everyone knows that by now. But in this respect, MMOs are an entirely different beast. And Square Enix effed up.

It's worth a second look because they've literally remade it from scratch.

But for the PS3? A big ol' heyel nao.

lol Ben theres a difference between throwing in a few patches to fix whats broken (which is what youd expect and dev to do on an entirely online game) and making a completely new game from the ground up just with the same title. I say they went above and beyond what they HAD/NEEDED to do to make the game suck less.

As for if its a crappy service it better be free? Umm yeah that makes LOGICAL sense but do you know how many shitty P2P games there are out there that people are actually paying for? Clearly those devs didnt/dont care as much as SE does

Worlds point about releasing it for a system most of us won't be using in a little over a year from now is however very legit. It's short-sighted, you don't play a mmorpg for just a few months.

Unless, of course, they make a PS4 client too down the road. That could happen.

You know what? Never mind. I forgot I was talking to somebody who's never wrong.

God only knows what I was thinking to challenge that. Just forget I said anything.

So your argument FOR buying this game and paying monthly fees at the tail end of this generation is "But they admitted it sucked and remade it from the ground up"?

SE hasn't made anything properly this generation so why should we count on them to redo a broken MMO?

lol Ben, me, never wrong? thats odd cause I can recall plenty of times where Ive been proven wrong. I know how to admit defeat when Ive been defeated. Just because you wont take the time to do so (assuming i am "wrong" which would be odd considering all of this is opinion and not fact which last i checked an opinion cant be wrong or right) isnt my fault.

World plenty of good games have been released at a consoles end of lifecycle… besides its practically 2013 an ps4 hasnt been officially announced yet, we might not get it til 2014, also if the game is released digitally on PSN theres a 95% chance itll be usable on PS4 (just look at what CCP is doing with Dust 514, theyve already confirmed that itll be upgradable for/to PS4 when it launches so that the game wont be dead when ps4 comes out and ps3 is all but abandoned)

Even if they dont anyone who cares about the game isnt gonna stop PS4 coming out "tomorrow" from playing it on ps3… I keep my ps2 (which doesnt even read discs anymore) running even now for the sole purpose of playing FFXI, lastly how many years after a new console is out is the older console still getting games, decent support, sales and ppl still using them? PS2 keep going for a long time after PS3 hit, and even with Wii U out Im sure ppl will still be playing and buying Wii games for at least another 1-2 years

Underdog15

Wii console and software sales are already significantly less than 360 and ps3. It doesn't even total half of what the other guys get. True story.

I'm not sure it's best suited for console gaming. Sure, some people might, like you, but not most people.

I just restarted FFXI 2 weeks ago with my old character (to give an idea of how long it's been, I'm level 75 for my top classes. lol) and I gotta say, apart from being hacked and looted by gil sellers, I have no idea where to even begin again. And worse still, I'm somehow in the Ragnarok server (was in Cait Sith) and have no LS or friends. lol. So I don't even know the best way to level beyond 75. I'm thinking I might just drop it for good.

duomaxwell007
duomaxwell007

the servers merged thats why youre on another server with no ls, as to where to level past 75, everyone levels in abyssea from level 30 to 99 now.. you can level in alliances so ppl get 6+ ppl and kill 50 monsters at once lol its like leveling in dynamis… you can literally go from 75 to 99 in just a few hours

Also wii doing less? thats odd considering it has the highest overall world sales than both ps3 AND xbox.. and its probably doing bad now because a) wii u is out and most importantly b) even before Wii U teh Wii was a gen behind both PS3 and 360 considering it didnt even have HD

so if anything Id call the Wii U "finally catching up" as opposed to "evolving/ the start of a new gen"

I believe that I watched a new 7+ minute game-play trailer for it just this past week.
And I think the trailer was called "FFXV:Realm of the Reborn"(if I remembered it correctly).

I thought it looked pretty cool but since I'm not really into FF, I'd be probably the least qualified guy to say how, or if, it compares with any other FF titles, or even against the earlier PC version of FFXIV.

If it mysteriously ended up being a fantastic game on the PS3, then yes I might give it a go. Especially if it came with remote play for the Vita. Since this is unlikely, Square will not get our hard earned cash.

I used to love mmorpgs, in fact for many years it was the only genre I were interested in, but the mmorpg genre is in a dire need of something groundbreakingly *new*, and call me prejudicial if you like but I don't expect that to come from Square, especially not with a recycled old game.

Sometime into the future someone will release that "next gen mmo", though. And that day I'll be *very* curious to get to know more about it.

Beamboom,

Have you heard of ArcheAge Online? If not, check it out, you might be impressed for what they want to achieve in that game. It's very ambitious, also it's using Cry Engine 2 but they are planning to adopt Cry Engine 3. I'll leave it to you to find out more of the details.

The Korean MMO right? I can't say I *know* it, but I've come across the title a few times.

But it's the wrong setting for me. I really need something that is an *exact* match with the kind of virtual world I would want to invest time in. And that, to me, means futuristic. Sci-fi. Space. To seek out new lifeforms and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man has gone before.

It'd have to be a real, hardcore mmoRPG, with so much stats to read that a calculator is a required accessory. So much details to wrap my head around that I later will realize I didn't know what the heck I was doing the first fifty hours.

A world so gigantic that you really can get lost deep into somewhere and be entirely alone for miles and miles. And with cities/hubs capable of holding so many players in the same instance that your entire screen is exploding with life.

A game with skill-trees so complex that there really are not two characters alike, with *irreversible* decisions to be made all along the way.

And a game where you are not only building your character, but eventually also your space-ship. With a just as complex building opportunities as your character.

A game so scientific that real life science news might actually be of relevance to ingame details/mechanics.

A game that somehow (and I have no idea how) rewards real roleplayers. A community where being in character is not even a question. It's how it is done.

Some day… Yeah, some day. Let me keep this dream alive, for someday into the future it shall be reality. 🙂

Oh man have I ever, Biker, and that title is *extremely* promising! Everything about it screams awesomeness.

Kickstarter looks to be the best thing that has happened to gaming in recent times, with niche titles given the fair chance they deserve.

Up until the end of August, yeah. I got a new job at the end of August, and in the transition, I had to go a month without pay, so I cut out a bunch of unnecessary bills that month. I just never reactivated that one.

But the improvements are large and noticeable. I actually kind of liked the original, though not as much as with the improvements. So I might not be the best person to listen to. lol

Actually, yeah, I would give this a look, and on PS3 instead of PC. I don't have a PC that will run it, and I don't feel like investing in one. So, if I go FFXIV it will be on PS3. I must admit though, the fact that they want to charge for the game upfront is kind of a deterrent since I'd really like a demo to see how it all works, and I don't see them offering a demo for this one.

I'm right with you. I don't have a PC that can handle it, so I'd go with PS3. I was actually pretty interested in it from the start, but with everything that happened, I definitely need a demo before I buy it. I'm definitely not interested in putting money down for an hour of gameplay to find out that I hate it and won't ever play it.

I'm not sure PS3 owners even still want Versus… But what S-E did with A Realm Reborn is an amazing investment compared to what other devs would do…

If I did not have to pay monthly I would have certainly given this a try. But I refuse to pay monthly for any gaming service. I feel if I buy the initial game for full retail price I should have access to everything the game has to offer. You can imagine how well DLC goes down with me…

As a huge fan of Final Fantasy I am still annoyed they have included these numeral titles in the series. XI was bad enough, but XIV just looks like a continuation of XIV, the aesthetics of the races and world look identical. It's basically the next… well current gen version of XI. As S-E have become fond of sequels why not just call it XI-2. But of course it should have just been called Final Fantasy Online and this Final Fantasy Online II.

Beamboom have you heard of NCsofts new mmo rpg called Blade and Soul? Not sure if oriental style is your thing ot not but it's a martial arts mmo that runs on the unreal 3 engine and does alot of thing that other mmos dont do or at least i believe they dont do lol

Anyway you should check it out 🙂 ive been waiting for it since 2007 and theres also the possibility that it might come to consoles as well but not sure yet. It's being localized for NA/EU right now and im hella excited

Nope never heard of it! I'll google it and check it out. Oriental style isn't my "home turf" but at least it's not the traditional fantasy setting – that in itself is a selling point for me. 🙂

Thanks for the tip.

If they want this to survive they should make it a free digital download, and then charge their monthly fee after users get a trial period. That way it can survive the trip over to PS4 and people won't be put off by having to buy the game AND pay the subscription fees.

Rogueagent01

If the next gen is as close as people think and it is going to have a client on the PS4 then I agree 100% that it needs a trial period, especially after the failure of its initial launch. However since we are talking about SE here I doubt they will think about it logically. I still plan on trying it either way.

I am playing Borderlands 2 now. I am playing Ragnarok Odessey on my Vita. I am playing Raganarok Tactics on my Vita. I have a backlog of old rpgs I have yet to play on the Vita, including many ps1 games.

Phantasy Star Online 2 comes out next year, maybe, for the Vita in the states. I can play it online for FREE.

Why in the HELL would I want to play FF 14 online? I got to pay 64 bucks for the crappy game, then pay another 15 a month?

Monthly subs for mmos are a dieing breed. This game was dead before it ever came to the ps3.

End of Line.

Obviously MMOs are polarizing. I didnt like them until I found one that clicked with me. That was EQ2. I still play it 7 years later. In that time ive tried several others including FFXIV and I just couldnt find that same feeling as I got with EQ2. FFXIV was paricularly awful but ill be anxious for ARR.

Anyways the point is all MMOs are different so dont write off the genre as a whole. When / if FFXIV makes it to PS3 it will be a new game so dont judge based on the PC failure. I'll be getting it for PC but would not be afraid to get PS3 if that were my only option or preference. If it ends up being great or clicks with certain people then the console should not be a factor, but I do agree it is unusual to try and lauch such a title so near the end of a generation

One MMO you may like, Ben, is Wizard and/or pirate 101. if you can get past the kiddy appearance they are solid turn based and strategy rpg mmos respectively. A little repetitive but they were the best mmos I found after eq2, and really wouldnt recommend eq2 at this point.
