Most assumed it would become the biggest launch of 2012, and now it's official.
Activision Publishing, Inc. has announced that for the fourth consecutive year, the blockbuster Call of Duty franchise has nailed down the single largest entertainment launch of the year. In only 24 hours, Call of Duty: Black Ops II generated more than $500 million in revenue. Said Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick:
"With first day sales of over half a billion dollars worldwide, we believe Call of Duty is the biggest entertainment launch of the year for the fourth year in a row. Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise have exceeded worldwide theatrical box office receipts for "Harry Potter" and "Star Wars," the two most successful movie franchises of all time. Given the challenged macro-economic environment, we remain cautious about the balance of 2012 and 2013."
The press release says "millions of fans attended more than 16,000 midnight openings at retail stores worldwide," and Black Ops II was a top-trending topic globally on Twitter in 23 cities. Oh, and there have already been 30 million YouTube video views of the game's live-action "Surprise" launch trailer since it was released on October 29, 2012. Said Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg:
"Call of Duty has become more than a product people buy, it's become a brand people buy into. And every November we do more than just launch a game, we kick off an annual, unofficial but worldwide phenomenon called Call of Duty season. I want to thank our incredible team at Treyarch for making an amazing game, everyone at Activision for making this brand a force of nature and our retail partners for their unprecedented support of this franchise. But most importantly I want to thank our millions of fans for their continued support and loyalty and for making us better every day."

So when can we expect a CoD Hollywood movie franchise that comes out once a year?
Sooner than later
Okay guys, I have a question: What else makes half a billion dollars in just 24 hours?

Drug cartels?
Investor groups?
Oil companies.
UGH.
Well, I guess that Halo 4 would be 2nd best seller so far this year, as it was reported early yesterday morning that M$ stated that H4 did $222 million in sales so far.

Mitt Romney?
World,
Ha, I said M$, not MR.
But at least MR earned it on his own!
If pillaging people is earning, then yes. :p
I was responding to Killa, and yeah if you call firing people and sending their jobs to China "earning" it then he fits that bill.
Well when you buy a video game, you buy months worth of content, while a $12 movie ticket is a 2 hour thing.
But I am enjoying black ops II, its the first COD game I have ever pre ordered.
I am having some of those freezing issues when split screening, but other than that no problems.
Makes me think of lemmings
And once again, I'm royally annoyed by the fact that video game sales are being compared to movies or any other form of entertainment. If movie tickets cost $59.99, then this would be a much bigger accomplishment, but they don't, so saying CoD beats out Harry Potter and Star Wars in life-to-date sales is ridiculous.
Despite all of Ben's hard work to try and keep COD sales down it still broke records? I helped:) I am playing it right now. FUN GAME!!!!
ENJOY!
hey have any of you geys with freezing issues got a ps3 slim or are you all using the older phat model?
Just wondering if there is a correlation because the guys I play with who have slims don't seem to be freezing up –
That might be, my friends who have a slim complain about major problems but my old is working fine.
Though split screen also seems to be the major culprit. phatty
So does this cement this as the greatest game ever made?
Sales definitely don't mean quality…
Miggy,
Hmmmm, I guess it could…but only if you also thought Justin Beiber was the greatest singer ever made too.
The Call of Duty "camper" song….
