Does A Poor PC Review Cast A Shadow Over Hitman: Absolution?

Hitman: Absolution is easily one of the most anticipated titles of the year. …but is something seriously wrong?

According to Gameranx citing the Christmas 2012 issue of PC gamer, the upcoming stealth/action game could be downright broken. In fact, the word "mess" is used.

Obviously, the review isn't exactly complimentary, as it says the story is bad, the levels are small, and AI sucks, and there are "pointless objectives." Furthermore, it seems to confirm a fear long-time fans have had ever since Ubisoft started promoting Absolution : The review says the game actually encourages you to kill guards and other enemies, which is in stark contrast to previous franchise installments, which put a premium on silence and stealth. Many were concerned about this after seeing some trailers that hinted at an adventure that was clearly more about action than stealth.

Of course, this is only one review and who knows, it might end up being the only negative review we see for the game. …sadly, however, that seems unlikely. What happened?

I hope not.

And according to some of the poster's there, they pretty much said this reviewer is known for faulty reviews.

So until more info from other sources comes out, I'll take his review with a grain of salt for now.

If it's like that we all know what to blame for what happened, action/twitch killing good franchises.

I'd put the blame on the publisher, not other genres or other gamers. We, the hitman fans, want a Hitman game. If we don't get that it's not the shooter fans fault.

Can't agree with that, shooter super-success is the reason stealth games and survival games and RPGs are all embracing action.

Look at dishonored and say : it s perfectly possible to give both option in the same game .

Only one to blame is ubosoft , could easily give both option if they wanted to .

well there two reviews for the ps3 version, both official playstation magazine both give it 9/10, now i know these are official mag reviews i know they should be taken with a pinch of salt… but recently the reviews from these guys have been harsh, more so than the edge.

i haven't tracked down a copy of the review yet, but i would be interested in why they have scored it so well, i really hope they are right too, i loved hitman games.

I feared this all along. It was something about those trailers that was so *not* Hitman.

I hope I am wrong, but either way there is salvation in that there currently is another great stealthy game on the market: Dishonored. It's a new IP, a new kid on the block, and it's *great*.

Don't buy Hitman just cause it says Hitman on the box. Every game should be judged on their own merits. And one glance at the Dishonored metascore should be enough. 🙂

(And so starts my Dishonored post-launch campaign. 🙂 )

I'm not overly worried. I mean, a production that seems to have the scope of Absolution is bound to have some small issues. I'm still getting it, even if it does get hammered on a more consistent basis.

Sounds like it has a small scope.

2012, thats what happened!
the year of mediocrity!
the mayans were right, it IS the end of the world.
the gaming world.
sigh, there goes our hope of this being the best game of the year, selling a bazillion copies, and proving to these suits that there IS a market for a hardcore stealth game!
sigh.
thanks eidos for driving the final nail into the coffin of my favorite genre!

I read scans of the review online and it says that some of the targets your supposed to kill happen in cutscenes so you dont actually kill the targets and some of them even escape making everything you done pointless.

This really just reads like a poor review. For it to be accurate, the game would not only need to fail to live up to the promotional videos (which isn't exactly uncommon), but the 'Sniper Challenge' as well, which I find extremely unlikely. It would also need to be the worst entry in the series, and even though the first game isn't amazing, it's still solid and all the gameplay I've seen looks significantly better than 'Blood Money', the best entry in the series, in my opinion.
Anyway, no. My pre-order of the Professional Edition stands.

Since most PC reviewers out there are bat sh!t crazy, I'm not worried yet. I'll wait for the reputable reviewers.

Here is another example of why the review system needs a "reform". I hate using that word but it seems so fitting.

I've heard the opposite of what the review states. It does play like the original in that you can turn off all the assists in the game. So I'm crying foul on this reviewer. Wish I had extra cash for this game. Looks really great :).
