Dead Island Riptide: Similar, But Hardly More Of The Same

As some of you know, Dead Island Riptide is coming. And it'll be in yet another tropical setting with a bunch of zombies.

However, that doesn't mean we're looking at a rehash; while fans of the first told developer Deep Silver they wanted more of the same, the team still wanted to generate a relatively new environment. So what's different? Well, creative director Sebastian Reichert addressed that issue in a recent VG24/7 interview :

"…the request from the fans after the success of Dead Island was very clear – they want more and they want it now! However, creating a whole new setting will take a lot of time.

So the question shifted to ‘do we have enough ideas in the same setting to offer another great experience, or do we have to shift the setting to deliver a full experience?’ Dead Island: Riptide is the answer to that. We changed the setting partially, built in new features fitting to this different environment and now we make sure the experience rocks again."

This time around, rather than an island that was well developed by humans, the new island will be relatively untouched. Therefore, we'll have a more natural setting, which could offer plenty of new gameplay opportunities. As for the storyline, Reichert mentioned a "darker" plot along with a brand new character. Finished the director:

"There will be whole lot more to do. One small example would be that the game now tracks which weapons you use and mirrors that in your proficiency with those weapons."

We look forward to seeing some Riptide gameplay soon.

I hope there's some kind of development in the area, I don't want to just be out in the wild as I like to explore buildings and stuff.

I think that the best way to improve dead island would be to make it so that weapons don't break. I hated it in the first game, because you spend all the time and money upgrading a weapon just to have it break after 10 hits. The game only got fun during the later levels when I had enough stats in the durability category that my stuff wasn't constantly breaking and I always had enough cash to fix them when they did

You're supposed to hang onto the weapons you like (not break them) and keep them up before they get too damaged so it doesn't cost much. It's part of the overall survival mechanic.

But in the beginning it is almost impossible to keep up on your weapons health and also just about pointless because you are constantly finding better weapons and money is scarce. I didn't really start enjoying the game until I made it to the Island with the scientists on it, because by then I could afford to repair my weapons. Because leveling had slowed down by then I was finally finding weapons that were not instantly replaced by better ones, it changed the game considerably and made it so much more fun to have weapons that actually worked

And the tendency for one person to get kicked off while riding in a car. That was a great part of the co-op that got messed up.
