The next generation is coming. That much is inevitable.
And if 2013 is the last full year for the PlayStation 3, will it go out with a bang? Top-notch exclusive software has been its backbone throughout this generation, and that trend should continue next year.
We're already fairly certain that The Last Of Us , God of War: Ascension , and Beyond: Two Souls will launch at some point in 2013 (even if Quantic Dream hasn't nailed down anything specific just yet). That trio right there is pretty impressive and in terms of exclusive firepower; in contrast, in 2011, we got Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception , Killzone 3 , LittleBigPlanet 2 , Catherine , and Resistance 3 , among others. 2012 has been a little bare; Journey is leading the charge, it seems, although Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time and PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale could make a big splash in the fall.
But those three almost guaranteed titles for the PS3 in 2013 could represent three of the very best games of the year. On top of which, there's no knowing if something like Killzone 4 (or another of Guerrilla's currently unknown projects) will erupt. Then we hear Sony is prepping a few new surprises for Gamescom, and nobody would be surprised if another big PS3 exclusive was announced at the show. And what about Gran Turismo 6 and Uncharted 4 ? Perhaps Sony is saving those for a huge PS4 debut, but who knows? This is only August; a lot more could be revealed!
Either way, it appears 2013 is shaping up to be a great year for the PS3, even if news of the PS4 steals its thunder.
Ben, it seems like it. There is obviously pressure building within the industry to release another round of next generation hardware, however I have always felt the Ps3 has more to give.
Now with the release of the open platform Ouya console for $99 in March 2013, it will be interesting how the titans of the console world deal with this up and coming newbie. Its powered by the quad core Tegra 3 processor and the results are generally good for what it is…
Have a quick look at ShadowGun on YouTube… not bad considering!
Reminds me of a smaller version of the Nintendo Game Cube; but being an open platform everyone can get stuck in and develop for it. It will be interesting to see how the various models work.
As far as Sony goes and their exclusives; well you can pretty much bank on Sony producing some spectacular titles for their next generation platform. We will see how costs dictate the final format of the Ps4, but like many here, I would have been happy to keep playing the Ps3 for a good 3 to 4 years before having to upgrade.

I was the same way when the PS3 came out. I was happy with my PS2 and figured I'd have plenty of time to get a PS3…then I realized I was being foolish and I'm glad I changed my mind. You'll see…you'll be itching for a PS4 as it becomes revealed and approaches release.
I don't understand the pressure from devs to have new hardware when at least half the multiplat devs (including big ol Ubisoft) haven't even figured out how to make their games run smooth on current hardware.
LV, you a are probably right! It will be tough not too get it… darn, it will be difficult. The issue is though there are so many games still worth playing on the Ps3.
I am of the mind set that we may be surprised at how many people may hold back this time in purchasing a Ps4. You will have an initial rush, but the issue is, if the current Ps3 is so well embedded now in peoples TV room and lounges, and it is doing everything they want it to do; what will be the urge to make you upgrade.
Understandably, the hard core gamers and graphics whores will want to upgrade… if they are tempted enough to do so. Maybe GT6, Killzone 4 etc will look so good that it will be irresistible, who knows… but it's going to have to be a very strong pull.

@world, have you ever read a comment here in like…ever? "too bad the 360 holds the ps3 back". The next round of consoles is more a "much needed" upgrade for the xbox which is the weakest link and makes people think it will make 3rd party devs take full advantage of the ps3. Or at least its what I get from all their comments.
World, I feel similarly… just looking at the upcoming games, they look stunning. The environments alone in The Last Of Us are incredible. Amazing streaming technology being used. Seems the whole set looks like its hand painted; every panel looks unique…
Upgrading to Ps4 for more memory, higher resolution? Who knows, but seeing the latest batch of exclusives its not warranted right now. Maybe we will be so blown away by new Ps4 tech demo's, I will end up having to eat my hard disk…

Cesar… that is a very valid point and it should not be forgotten… the 360 could be blamed for some of this "upgrade hysteria" that the press and developers have been honking on about…

I'm like you Vertigo; I held off getting a PS3 until October 2008. Up until that time, I continued playing my PS2 and was like "Bleh, my PS2 can do everything better. And has PES2005, which is all that matters". And THEN I saw a few gameplay trailers, including one from MGS4 (with the Japanese guy playing it…god, that brings back memories), and saw some sense and finally got one. I now slap myself daily for being so foolish :p
Ouch Ludicrous! You are being awfully hard on yourself don't you think? 🙂
Ok, so it took you a little while before getting the Ps3, but hey, at least you did get it and you have been enjoying it immensely…
"Better late than never!" – how true…

@World: What you say there could be part of why they do want new hardware? 😉
Yeah it could mean they need more wiggle room, but that's just lazy development imo.
Wow no love for Tales of Xillia and Ni No Kuni! Only game I want from Sony is QD Beyond I believe the game will be much better than HR.
I'll be getting those two titles but the sad truth is they will probably barely break 1 million in sales if that.
Wow, of course. How could I forget Ni No Kuni. I'll be getting that, but I think World's right about those two not being a hot seller.
Ni No Kuni could surprise. There's a significant amount of buzz for that game considering it's a jrpg…
I thought this was more about quality software than sales..
we could do both =/
See i don't like that,going out with a bang.
There were no great Japanese PS3 Games on the PS3.It's like they completely ignored it.I think PS3 has more life than 2013 with awesome exclusives.
Tales of Graces F, Eternal Sonata, White Knight Chronicles I and II, Yakuza 3 and 4, Catherine, Star Ocean TLH, Vanquish…
wait wait…no great japanese games?! Ok…true…in the sense that its significantly less from the PS2 era…but there are still some awesome PS3 games out there!
Yakuza 3 + 4 should be ones you really liked!!!
Metal Gear Solid 4 & Gran Turismo 5 make it into my 'Top 5' without question.
I know both of those aren't very 'Japanense', if that's what you meant…but they are still from Japan, sooo…they kinda are :p
wait, so your saying yakuza 3 and 4 were not "great japanese games"?
jaw?
meet floor!
Yeah I think the exclusives will trail off in 2014 as the PS4 approaches.
Catherine, however, was not exclusive.
No it will go out in a fizzle but not in 2013 though. The launch of the PS4 doesn't necessarily mean the end of the PS3. It should still be getting plenty of support after the PS4s release.
It will be 2014(maybe)when we start to see some hard evidence on ps4
i have foreseen it…..
Yea…you know what would make it even more of a bang?
The Last Guardian
Moreover…
Final fantasy Versus XIII
*groans*
Loosing "The Last Guardian" is a disaster… if true. It looked so good, it may have made all Ps3 owners think it was not worth upgrading.
Maybe that was the issue… it was just to good to release… 🙂

Besides those three mention, the best firepower left from Sony for 2013 would be Final Fantasy Vs. XIII, Last Guardian, and Gran Turismo 6. Of course, that's not counting any of the unannounced one.
It's pretty safe to assume Uncharted 4 will go to the PS4. Gran Turismo 6, not so.
As a gamer, I have always wanted the latest piece of technology. I remember when I first got my Sega Saturn. I just loved the Virtua Fighter series.
Then I got my first ps1. Wow. I was in rpg heaven. But I loved Tomb raider, Resident Evil, and all the awesome rpgs.
I wont even get into getting my first Pong game or Atari or what not. But I will say that with the PS4 …… Im just not getting that kiddy excitement, that "OMG I GOT TO HAVE IT IT IS SO COOL" attitude.
No company has ever excited me as much as Sony with it's new consoles. Maybe Im getting jaded in my old age.
I dont care about movies, music, streamed blah blah blah or anything else in the console. I just care about the games.
No matter how good Uncharted is, it will never beat out a good brand new Mario game for a new Nintendo system.
So if a new Final Fantasy, a new Gran Turismo, a new super hot mmorpg(Like PSO2), a new unannounced super hot game, or hell, maybe even a new Crash Bandicoot, comes out with a new Uncharted game when the new ps4 comes out, I will be fine with it.
It sure is exciting being a part of the Playstation brand. I will never understand how the X360 leads sales in the USA??? With the exclusives and diverse set of games on the Playstation I am not sure why the Playstation isn't number 1 right now? I know the X360 had a year head start, but Kinect is a failure. Must be that whole made in America BS. Just like buying a Chev over a Nissan or some other BS.
Oh well, I am glad to be a part of the Playstation community! 2013 is shaping up nicely. Still a lot of good games coming out in 2012 yet.
The big 3 mentioned in the article are pretty much sure proof imo that PS3 will end on a high.
The Last of Us is a fitting title name for that too 😉
absolutely!
and thats exactly the problem!
it just seems that 1 theres too many exclusives releasing next year, and 2 those will get little attention because of the ps4 announcement.
i think $ony would of been WAY better off releasing the bulk of them this year that way they would of got the full focus of the community.
weve had to sit back all year and wait till next year till the biggest exclusives release!
makes me a sad panda that the next big ps3 exclusive to release will probably be beyond 2 souls, a game that was only announced 2 months ago!
The Last Of Us, God of War: Ascension, and Beyond: Two Souls could represent 3 of the best of the year ? i was thinking they could represent 3 of the best of the generation! haha.
on a serious note now my thought is that this next wave of AAA titles we're looking at ( TLOU GOWA BTS ACIII GTAV tomb raider among others ) will likely be the final wave of big release's this gen.
i can't see ND doing another uncharted. 3 titles on PS3 feels right.
Guerrilla gotta think they're at work on KZ4 PS4. same with GT6.
no news from sucker punch in awhile i wonder why… IF3 on PS4.
so yes the PS3 will surely go out with a massive bang in 2013 and what a glorious bang it will be! btw ben you forgot Mr kojima's next game…. but then again i guess we don't really know if that's droping next year.
