Today, Ubisoft has announced a Bass Expansion for the original and well-received Rocksmith ; the new DLC will be available on August 14, for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and hold a price tag of $29.99.
With this new expansion, all 53 of the game's original on-disc tracks that feature bass, along with any DLC tracks you may have purchased, will be automatically updated and instantly available to play with a bass guitar. You'll be able to practice skills like 2-finger plucking, slapping, and popping thanks to "dedicated bass technique challenges, tutorial videos and mini-games." Players are allowed to use any 6-string guitar to emulate a 4-string bass, too, so this is a flexible addition.
Lest you forget, Rocksmith is the only game that lets you use any real guitar or bass with a standard 1/4" input jack. You can go through a big library of songs and really hone your ability; this ain't nothin' like Guitar Hero or Rock Band . This is for people who actually want to be musicians.

I have it, it's really fun! I'm already pretty well-versed in guitar (although drums are my primary weapon) so I can't tell you how effective it is as a learning tool, but it couldn't hurt! I think they have some modes other than songs that show you some guitar basics but I didn't really take much of a look at that stuff yet.
As for the DLC:
My bassist friend is going to happy about this news but for $30 they should add a few new bass-centric songs…
I got it a couple of weeks ago and I am pleased with it and impressed by it. It really does work as advertised. It has helped with my motivation to practice regularly, but like I said it has only been a couple of weeks so far. I haven't run into the PS3 lock-up problems yet, but the patch for that is supposed to come out the same time as the bass DLC.
I do think that the automatically adjusting difficulty feature has some unfortunate quirks – but overall it works, builds skills, and is fun.
As a learning tool not so much.
I was disappointed that it wasn't as helpful as it could have been. I've been playing for years but still not able to read music. When I bought the game I figured that when the notes would come down the "highway" it wouldn't just be a basic colored block it would display the musical notation and name of the note -it doesn't.
What a wasted opportunity to have someone follow along with Tablature but also learn music theory at the same time.
I would have preferred learning while I play
(Much like a Typing of the Dead sort of way)
but it doesn't so it goes…
It does show you how to play each song and most of the selection are good songs, sometimes it can get ruthless and frustrating so be prepared for that.
Overall it puts an instrument into your hands that is by far the most important step.
