It was probably inevitable.
It had been pseudo-confirmed earlier but now we've got the official press release:
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, TT Games and The LEGO Group have announced LEGO Lord of the Rings , which will be available this fall for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, DS, 3DS, Vita, and PC. So basically, every major current system.
Obviously based on the fantasy classic by J.R.R. Tolkien and the wildly popular film adaptations from director Peter Jackson, this new LEGO adventure will follow the original storylines from the trilogy ("The Fellowship of the Ring," "The Two Towers," and "The Return of the King"). And although there are quite a few frights along the way, LEGO is always good clean amusing fun for the whole family. Said TT Games Managing Director Tom Stone:
"We are huge aficionados of The Lord of the Rings franchise and are incredibly excited to put our special LEGO family-friendly touch on this classic fantasy adventure. We’ve taken what fans are familiar with and love about The Lord of the Rings films and combined it with the playful LEGO style, which makes the story and gameplay accessible to gamers of all ages."
The One Ring must be destroyed and Frodo Baggins and his intrepid band of adventurers must get the job done. But the Misty Mountains, Mines of Moria, and the nightmarish land of Mordor stand in their way, as does hundreds of nasties, including Orcs, Uruk-hai, and even the Balrog. The good news is that Aragorn the Ranger, Gandalf the Wizard, Legolas the Elf, Gimli the Dwarf, and Boromir, Man of Gondor, or more than a match for such evil creatures. Can't wait to play this one!

This might be a lot of fun. My wife has never wanted to watch the LOTR movies, but in this more cartoon-like presentation she might actually enjoy the story…lol.
I may have to get this… I've never played a Lego game, but when it comes to LOTR it's almost impossible for me to say no. It's just too bad the last few games haven't been very good :/
They have become a bit formulaic. But the Star Wars ones still kick ass.
I really wish they would revisit the Star Wars Complete Saga with the new dynamic split screen and trophies! That would be epic! My son and I play SWCSaga and it's so hard without the dynamic split screen. I have boycotted all older LEGO games due to this deficiency.

I have all the new LEGO games and they are all really great. Don't listen to the reviewers seriously. Pirates of the Caribbean is amazing, yet a little buggy. It will lock up from time to time. My son and I almost have the platinum. The Harry Potter, Star Wars III and Indiana Jones games are also great. I would highly recommend you give them a try or at least make sure you try LEGO LoTR.
This looks really great! Love how HUGE the One Ring is! 🙂 Cannot wait for this. This and Batman 2 LEGO is on fire! 🙂
I've purchased every one of these with the exception of Lego Rock Band and have enjoyed them all except for Lego Star Wars the Clone Wars. Mostly for my girlfriend who can't put controller down once she starts playing. Very excited about this and can't wait to get it.
I watch every LOTR movie 3 time.Last was the HD version extended cuts and im waitnig years for LEGO. I keep my Star Wars Complete Saga at least until PS4 come out. Remember the Hobbits movie is out December this year too.
