Soul Calibur V Fights Its Way To Shelves On January 31

Soul Calibur has always been awesome. Therefore, January just got a little awesomer.

Today, Namco Bandai Games America Inc. has announced that Soul Calibur V will release for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in North America on January 31.

Featuring returning favorites and Ezio Auditore de Firenze from Ubisoft's uber-popular Assassin's Creed series, the fifth installment is set 17 years after its predecessor. If you're a big SC fan, you can pick up the Collector's Edition, which features a soundtrack CD, making-of video content, hardcover art book and the Dark Knight and White Knight downloadable armor sets for Character Creation Mode. Fantastic stuff for the hardcore followers! Said Namco Bandai Vice President of Marketing Carlson Choi:

"Fighting game fans have been itching to get their hands on SOULCALIBUR V to begin mastering classic characters and new heroes alike. We are excited to see what top players and newcomers discover with the new Brave Edge and Critical Edge systems which are bound to create dynamic and exhilarating battles."

Namco also revealed the pre-order incentives: if you put your deposit down at GameStop, you'll get a free Ivy Valentine Bobble Budd figurine (it's just a decorative toy, you perverts). Pre-ordering at Best Buy nets you a free exclusive character download code to play as Dampierre, and 24-hour Wal-Mart locations will hand out an exclusive limited edition laser art-cell. Some Wal-Marts will also be hosting "Fastest Way to Play" midnight launch events.

All pre-order bonuses are only available "while supplies last" so get movin'.

Must…not…mention….Sophitia….

Argh! too late. 😛

Seriously, the lack of several characters that have been series favorites leaves me unimpressed with this new installment. The inclusion of Dampierre instead is puzzling, and to me disappointing. I'm sure many gamers will rush to get this, but I won't be one of them. I feel like this is a mis-step for the series.

maybe Namco will offer missing characters as overpriced DLC?

they'll probably sell optimized customization parts. you'll buy sophitias hair, outfit, weapons. kinda like what they did with white knight chronicles 2, although wkc2 doesnt seem overpriced.

They lost me when they didn't release on the playstation awhile ago. Haven't been enthused to return to the series since. Not bitter just that amount of time was enough to zap any interest I had in the franchise.

Sorry, that day is reserved to XIII-2 for me.

I like the SC series mostly because it's the most ornately decorated of the fighting game bunch.I think cosplayers are scared of reproducing many of this cast.

I haven't been able to really take to SC's combat system as well as other 3D fighters, but I still like this series anyway. I look forward to checking this one out at launch.

as much as i loved playing previous soul caliber games, i'm passing on this one. i dont find much value in fighting games anymore. they're not worth it to me this gen. soul caliber 4 was by far the worse online experience i played this gen. how can a game based on reflexes suck so much online. they shouldve worked a lot more on the online component to minimize lag. still kinda stung seeing the roster missing a block, yoda, after unlocking every character. it was pretty damn clear that they will sell the exclusive character to the other system. it shouldve been a free download after a while.

Still no word of taki?

I believe that she is one of the series favorites that have been cut in favor of the new generation. She may appear in a cutscene, but is not playable.

Ew how can they cut Taki. How can you work on a game for so long and actually screw your roster like that O_O She was my only reason to buy this game so its now a total skip for me. T-T

Have a look at the wiki for the game, I'm not sure you will be very impressed by the character roster.

I'm sad to see some characters aren't returning, but I'll give this game a chance. I love Sophitia too, but the new characters might be really fresh and interesting. I'll pass judgment later.

Also, Ken Levine will pre-order this game to get the Ivy Bobble Budd figurine, but only to look deep into her soul. Her personality is amazing.

Have they released a full roster yet? Im still wondering about Kilik. I would like to buy this day one but XIII-2 comes out the same day, overall several rpgs will release early next year so I have to wait.

Not yet, but the roster revealed so far has 16 so-called returning characters, 13 or whom are male. Kilik is not among them.

Of those returning you have 'odd' choices such as Dampierre, Lizrdman, the edge master, Algol…

Considering Lizardman was at best a tertiary character, Algol only appeared in SC4, Dampierre only appeared on the PSP version and the Edge Master hasn't been seen since SC2, they make odd choices IMHO. The only returning females are Ivy, Hilde and Tira. Hilde was new in SC4, Tira was new, and annoying in SC3. Ivy is…well…Ivy.

The game cover, the roster and even the picture with this article leave me feeling that the game has a decided more male theme with it's characters. Personally I hated Dampierre and can't understand why he's back, the entire roster revealed so far leaves me less than interested. Which is a shame, I used to consider the game a favorite.

Im still surprised that there has been no backlash. Very odd decisions have been made no doubt. When I heard Edge Master was returning I had think for moment because I had forgotten him. I wonder who will be available through dlc and I hope the price is reasonable. I don't understand dampierre attraction either. I am excited about Ezio!

I understand that they have a new story arc, but removing Taki, Xianghua, Sophitia, and Cassandra in one move? Crazy decision. These are some of their more popular characters, and they are the ones that get cut…?

meh.
SC is the one fighting series ive never been able to get into.
im a massive MK fan, tekken, or even street fighter.
but soul caliber, especially 4 really poured on the bore for me and killed what little interest i had in the series.
