When we hear a company – especially a Japanese company – plans to "reimagine" something, we feel a tingle at the base of our spines.
So many things could go horribly wrong. But then again, provided the franchise in question really is in need of a reboot, it might be a good idea… Shall we remain optimistic for now?
According to a Sega of America job listing (as cited by GamerZines ), the company is looking for an executive producer who will work on "a high quality product based on a reimagining of one of Sega's most beloved IP's." There are no other details, but you can bet that rampant speculation has already begun. Sega didn't even mention targeted platforms, so we can't really narrow our search, although we might be able to strike Sonic from the list. They just released Sonic Generations , which was a borderline triumphant return to form.
Then again, maybe it was a precursor of things to come. Maybe they're working on a full-fledged 2D Sonic. But that still doesn't seem right…any ideas as to what this "beloved IP" might be? And don't say Shenmue .
Fingers crossed for Streets of Rage. I can't name a current generation game that is a side scrolling beat em up. An HD Streets of Rage if done right could be fantastic. Heck, it may not even have to be a 2D side scroller. I miss my days of Final Fight, Streets of Rage, Aliens vs Predators, TMNT, and Double Dragon side scrollers.
Shank was cool, but still not the same as the old school titles.

Thats Exactly what i was thinking………
Even though i got part 2 free because of PS PLUS
Golden Axe as a God of War killer!
edit: No I don't want GOW to die, just think it would be cool if they tried to top it.

With 4 player online co-op play. uber sweet
But Golden Axe was rebooted, and the less said about that the better.
That wasn't really a reboot, just a bad game, which is why it needs to be rebooted.
Daytona USA, Shenmue, Panzer Dragoon, Shinobi, Shenmue, and Shenmue.
I'm afraid of a Virtua Fighter reboot, because they'd probably screw with the hardcore play. The game does need a popularity shot in the arm, however.
They could probably do something cool with Altered Beast or Streets of Rage.
It'd be also cool to see a return to traditional Genesis Phantasy Star games.
And who'd I be without listing Virtual On. my bad =p
Shenmue just needs to be continued instead of rebooted, but I'd definitely go for Panzer Dragoon. What a fun game. I kinda wanna play it just talking about it, too bad I sold my Saturn long ago. Maybe Orta if I can get my Xbox going again (somebody jostled it)
I think i'd like SHenmue to be rebooted. Rebooted faithfully that is. I don't know if anyone has gone back and tried playing Shenmue again, but there's a lot of modern design aspects in gaming today that didn't quite make it as far back as Shenmue. THe controls, for example, are pretty terrible as they are now by today's standards. THe DC had only one analog stick after all.
I think if they took the series and relaunched it with the same theme, setting, and story,(including the game of "Lucky Hit") while modernizing it's antiquated elements, the reboot would be well appreciated by myself.
But I think this is all wishful thinking, as I believe Sega realized themselves that Shenmue's ambition outstrips how marketable it can be. I remember reading, leading up to Shenmue's launch, Sega realized they would need to sell 2 copies of Shenmue to every Dreamcast owner to even break even on the project (Yeah, someone lost their job I'm sure for ever green lighting the project for DC to begin with).
I suspect, a game of Shenmue's scale outstrips Sega pocket books of today. And, truthfully, Sega of today usually makes sub-quality products, so I doubt in their ability to even make a faithful recreation of the originals.
I've gone back and played it, it was sad to see how bad it aged because at the time it was a shockingly in depth experience, I still say it would be best to add all the needed updates to a third title and keep going.
Seeing as how a new Virtua Fighter was put in arcades last year, and will be brought to home systems next year, a reboot really isn't needed.
My guess would be one of the following:
Altered Beast
Golden Axe
Panzer Dragoon
But the number 1 choice is………..
Phantasy Star!!
Would be great to see a new Phantasy Star that was turned based like Phantasy Star II. PSII is probably my most treasured game of all time. Tied with Zelda Ocarina of Time.
Phantasy Star would be sweet, make it a turn based alternative to Final Fantasy. I was not pleased with the PSP games.
I agree, the PSP Phantasy Star games don't appeal to me at all. I don't like that formula.
I'm hoping Zaxxon makes a comeback.
who?
Sega game from the early 80's.
…Shenmue….oh please I need to know what happens with the dragon mirror!!>R$!?!?%> if 2 didnt have the biggest cliff hanger of all time I wouldn't care so much but it does so I do.
road rash on next gen if they are just now looking for executive producer at least that's what I'm hoping for maybe something along the lines of like a NFS the run more story
Isn't Road Rash an EA property?
I'd love to see a new Streets of Rage. They could also do some pretty cool things with a new Vectorman.
"Rise from your grave "
I would love to see a Panzer Dragoon reboot.
Space Channel 5? They could implement the PS Move with the controls now.
i hope it is streets of rage
if you haven't played it already streets of rage 4 was made from scratch, its really fun. fan made but really great. I hope a real developer makes this one!!! 🙂
Please let it be Phantasy Star!
So many great Sega games. Panzer Dragoon, Phantasy Star, Crazy Taxi, Power Stone…New Power Stone would be awesome.
For all you Phantasy Star fans, the first four are available on the Ultimate Genesis Collection. The emulation is really accurate and the games look great in HD…and they're just as hard as ever 😉 Plus that Genesis rock is awesome.
I'd say it's Shenmue, with the success of Yakuza at the moment, it's about time.
JET SET RADIO
WONDER BOY! That, along with Outrun Europa and Master of Darkness (damn, it took some searching to find the name of that last one) were my three favourite games from the Master System/Mega Drive. If it is any of them, I will lose the plot.
I don't know if Sega had anything to do with it but all I want is a reboot of Chakan: The Forever Man.
Good choice, theat was hard as hell…even with the infinite lives.
If it's not Shenmue I'm gonna do something totally mean like calling Sega a big poopy face out in public.
I really don't care about anything from Sega except Valkyria Chronicles. That game I love to death.
Haven't played Shenmue but I hear nothing but praises about it so that kinda intrigues me.
Chakan was awesome! I'm glad someone else remembers that game.
ROAD RASH!
I'm surprised no one has mentioned skies of arcadia!? I'd love a new game in that series.
dont think a tingle is the right word.
more like a shudder.
no thanks SEGA, none of your games deserve a "reboot"!
if i wanted a traditionally japanese game turned into a mindless western action game id go buy FFXIII!
Phantasy Star!!!
Ranger X (best mech title along w/ ZOE I&II)
Vector Man
Eswat
Mystic Defender
ROCKET KNIGHT ADVENTURES.
I'm guessing Alex Kidd.
Shinobi ?
Virtua Cop ?
How about Monaco GP ?
cray taxi!!!!
Phnatays Star, to compete agaisnt Final Fantasy. A smucha s I'd love to say Sonic, I just can't see that as happening. We've been getting those attempts for years.
Gauntlet would be sweet!
It would be but Gauntlet isn't a SEGA franchise …
Final Fight, Streets Of Rage, Double Dragon epic!
Phantasy Star Online 2 is in Closed Beta in Japan now and it looks great.
Don't know if thats what they were talking about then…
