New PS2 Model Sneaks Into Retailers

There's no point in completely abandoning a console that has the largest user base in history, and Sony has already said multiple times that they will continue to support the PlayStation 2 for a while longer. Want more evidence? Than take a gander at this picture.

According to a Kotaku reader, this is a photo of the new PS2 model, which is evidently arriving at retailers even as we speak (or write…whatever). The system is "slightly smaller" and while it does include an AC cord, it doesn't include an AC adapter. As far as we know, those are the only differences between this new model and the "old" Slim, although the prices may change slightly. This new "90000 series" PS2 has a price tag of $129.99, which is – or was – identical to the Slim PS2, as retailers have apparently dropped the price to $124.99 on the latter model. So far, Fry's Electronics and Wal-Mart tipsters have turned us onto this new PS2 version, although we expect to see it arrive at other retailers later this week.

The previous model drops to $125 now, but does this also mean we can expect it to drop to an even $100 for the holiday season? It'd be a great way to push even more PS2s out the door, especially now that all current PS3 models don't offer backwards compatibility for PS2 software. Don't you need another PS2? Of course you do!

Of course we need another ps2. Do you think sony took BC away from the ps3 just to push more ps2s?

Sweet, at least they are not deciding to kill the PS2. Losing BC is okay as long as they continue support for it.

You have a good point Jed. That would make since because Sony is no longer taking a loss on the PS2 hardware. It would help them recoup some of their losses on the PS3 hardware. That may be the real reason they removed the Backwards compatibility out of the new PS3's. Think about it how much more would they pay to add the software emulation on the console. Nothing because already created it.

I remember hearing about this new slim ps2 awhile ago. I think the powersupply is internal or something. Sony should really work on releasing a decent wireless ps2 controller of their own.

I've had mine for about 7 years and it has been used ALOT and it still plays well. Hopefully the ps3 is as durable.

Wow, I already have plenty of PS2's already, but might have to pick this one up eventually, as it's far more portable than the current 'slim' model with the exteral "power brick"! Especially if they drop the price to $100, or even just $120 early next year. I can have one in every room of the house!!!
