Most of us think of the current console competition as having three competitors, but even after nearly 9 years on store shelves, we shouldn't forget about the PlayStation 2. Sony sure hasn't, as they announced at E3 that over 100 more games were coming to the PS2 in 2008, and as of now, the most popular system in history has sold over 140 million units worldwide.
And now, according to statements given at Edinburgh's Interactive Festival, Sony head man Chris Deering believes the PS2 will surpass the Nintendo Wii's active user list by 2011. Deering was talking about how the games industry will continue to thrive and grow, predicting that by that year, there will be around 2.5 billion gamers worldwide. But he got more specific with his predictions, and he issued the following numbers, according to SpongyChicken and several other sources. By 2011, this is how the competition will stand in terms of active users:
Of course, these are nothing more than expectations, but it's always interesting to consider active users rather than hardware sales. In fact, this is the first time we've seen a competitive prediction involving active users and not sales numbers. Obviously, this is the reason why the PS2 is so high on the list, and as we said before, it'd be a mistake to discount the widespread appeal of that system. The PS2 forever!
Nice to see the PS3 higher than 360 but the 360 number seems kinda low to me
There will probably be a new xbox by then
oh hell yeah you tell em sony lolz
ps2's going for 200 million sold baby!!!!!!!!
lolz
its amazing the longevity the ps2 has (although they don't know what they're missing in this generation =)
Even though Sony lets us down at time they put all effort into thier Consules so I believe the PS2 can make it or even surpass it and Also the PS3.As for the 360 those figures seem kinda low I would say at least 55-60 million.(Thats only if they buff up thier Exclusive Titles and Appeal)
like Cliff Blisinsky said the is a virus. its too childish and uhhh……GAY!!
No system out can beat the quality of games the PS2 has and hopefully this will change.
I love my ps2 but I haven't played it since I got cod4. I find it interesting how sony kinda marketed it as the new casual gaming system.
I think the Wii is a bit high, isn't it? I thought the Wii is continuing to go downhill, especially after seeing their E3 conference this year and their no lineup of games. It's probably more like 0 because they'll have a new system by 2010 lol.
